Has anyone had luck with installing IL2 1946 on a windows 7 computer? I just tried it and it has come up with an error dealing with incompatible drivers when starting the program. I am wondering if there is a work around for that.

First of all, if you are installing it to the default location of the Program Files folder, then that might be your problem.

Ok, fixed it. It was an issue with the tages drivers.

From "Cutaway" (an old skydiver)
I have been successful in installing and running IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 V4.10.1 on Win7!
First of all, if you install from disk and open a.exe as recommended by others the game installs with no problem, except in my experience you cannot update the game this way. You are stuck with the disk version, 4.07m and cannot go further. I downloaded V4.08m but found the install aborted at about 80% into the process. You cannot open this file (or at least I do not know how) in order to try and sort out the problem. In other words you cannot access the update patch's setup.exe or equivalent. If this can be done, someone please be kind enough to tell me, because I am curious.
HOWEVER I found a way around this problem. I have an external hard drive connected via USB port to my older WinXP machine, which I use to backup my data. I backed up IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 V4.10.1
to the hard drive and then simply connected it to my new Win7 machine through one of it's USB ports. I then MOUSE-DRAGGED the file to the C:\ drive on the Win7 machine. It worked like a charm, with two small caveats. There is no desk top icon so you I have to open the file and double-click the IL2.exe file (I think it is) in order to start the game. Also, When the intro file plays, there is no sound. I right-click once, and the sound starts. When the intro is over, or when I press 'escape' to skip the intro, I find the mouse pointer on the menu screen is frozen. I then press the key on my keyboard which has the windows start symbol. This unfreezes the mouse pointer and I can play the game. It sounds cumbersome but it works. If you try this, please get back on the forum and tell me if you have the same experience with the sound and the mouse pointer. (The curse of the curious is always wanting to know.)

Lot of people have backed IL-2 up onto USB sticks. Will copying that onto a Win7 machine run? On XP the copied folder trick works just fine.

Yup, works fine with any OS that IL2 can run on. Win98, XP, Vista and 7.

The mouse pointer freezing is something that happens on all operating systems Cutaway. Some people have the problem while others do not have a problem with the mouse pointer locking up.

You can create a shortcut on your desktop using the IL-2.exe file.
  • Right click on the IL-2.exe file.
  • Create shortcut.

Now you can use the desktop icon to start the sim.

I'm running IL2 1946 under Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with an AMD Phenom II 1099T 6-core processor and an ATI Radeon 5870 and 8 GB DDR3 RAM.

I updated the Tages stuff, installed, patched to the latest Team Daedelus patch, and it works great.

One thing it does not like with an ATI Radeon card and the latest drivers is SmoothVision HD antialiasing. That tends to cause problems around some coastlines and create some terrain flickering.

But you can run regular antialiasing with no problems.

Both antialiasing options are available in the Catalyst Control Center. For the SmoothVision HD antialiasing, I tick "Use Application Settings". For the normal (non-SmoothVision) antialiasing settings, I just set it to 8X or whatever.

Cheers!

Where do you control "normal" anti-aliasing from?

If you have nVidia, then from your GPU control panel, program specific (only when that particular program starts), I guess...
