Just got my TM HOTAS Warthog. It will replace my TM Cougar with force mod. The Cougar used "old fashioned" gameport rudder pedals (I have two sets of those). I can hook up my existing rudder pedals using a gameport to USB adapter that I own. However, maybe I should go whole "hog" (ha, ha) and buy newer, better rudder pedals aimed at use with A-10C. Please give me your opinions on the makes and models of rudder pedals out there. Sure, I can do a search. But, I'd rather hear it first from the fanatical sim fans here at SimHQ. While money is an object, I might not object to a premium set of pedals that have good "reasons for being". Thanks

Hi Allen, Until I got my Thrustmaster Warthog and DCS A-10C, I used pedals w/o toe brakes. Then I upgraded to the Saitek Combat Pro Flight Pedals with toe brakes and am very happy to have them. My bro-in-law was here last weekend with his Warthog and he doesn't have pedals. I flew his jet for a bit and had to use the keyboard Z and X keys to taxi around the runways and had to transition to the stick after turning off the nosewheel steering - not too convenient. I own a set of CH Pro Rudder pedals which have served me nicely over the years. They are three axis (rudder left/right and each pedal tilts) and the set came with two little plastic blocks that help "fix" the rudder pedals and turn them into gas/brake pedals for racing sims.
The cost is a bit high, still around $100, but I'm very happy with them.

I have Saitek Pro Flight pedals but I can't really say how they act. The electronics on the pedals failed some time ago and now the axis' are wired to an old Logitech wingman stick which I turned into a switch panel.
I've got a bad feeling about this.....

I went straight for Saitek Pro Combat Pedals with toe brakes and am very satisfied. I don't use the toe brakes all that much, but I've been spending much time in DCS: Black Shark. They definitely give you significantly more taxi control if you're trying to be serious about it - a $200 investment.

I use the CH Pro usb. I like the smaller size because I travel a whole lot.

The CH's were too narrow for my liking. I like to give my nuts a bit more room. Using the Saitek Pro Flights and no complaints so far - actually one. I've got hardwood timber floors so they tend to slide when I get over enthusiastic.

Thanks. You all helped me zero in on a choice. CH Pedals are good. I own a pair of gameport CH pedals. I tried them with the TM Warthog and they did the job just fine as a rudder in X-Plane 9.7. Unfortunately, with the gameport to USB adapter, the toe breaks did not work. Moreover, they did not show up in the TM TARGET software. Had they worked, I would probably have stuck with the set I own. Today, the CH pedals were the best deal -- pedals plus $60+ of FSX add on software was under $100 delivered. Thought hard about ordering them. However, I already own CH and considered a change. Saitek Pro would go with my Saitek X52 Pro HOTAS. But, one of you mentioned a durability issue. They are an older design -- but seem OK. If they were all that was available, I would not really hesitate. They were also a very good buy -- being available for under $100 delivered. Looked at TM Rudder pedals. I have a set of the original pedals. The new ones are similar. Don't have toe breaks and are overpriced compared to CH and Saitek Pro. No good reason to buy another set. I went with Saitek PRO Flight Combat Rudder Pedals. Expensive (just under $200 delivered -- not much of a markdown); however, I hope they last 10 years. The selling points are that they "resemble" combat pedals, complement my Saitek X52 Pro HOTAS, and are a relatively new product (though they greatly resemble the design of the Saitek Pro superficially). Hopefully, any negatives in previous designs will have been fixed in these -- but who knows. I like the "realistic" metal pedals which allow me to rest my heels on the base -- rather than keeping pressure on the pedals (I tend to move pedals inadvertently when I have all my weight on them as with CH and TM pedals). Thanks again for the input

Here's what I got -- Saitek Pro Flight Combat: My old CH pedals and TM pedals are shown for comparison. The CH are a bit narrow, the TM a bit wide and have no toe breaks. Both slide around on the floor. The Saitek are a good width, feel more comfortable in operation, don't slide on the floor. Happy with the choice Thanks again

I bought the Saitek Combat Pro Flight Pedals after using my TM RCS pedals for about 15 years and they are an excellent pairing for the Warthog HOTAS without going to the expense of the simpeds.

Troll, Thanks for the tip FWIW, here are the pedals in action -- in my "computer closet". I posted same picture in hardware forum with a few words. The TM Warthog and TrackIR 5 are also new during the last two weeks along with DCS A-10C. A-10C is what "pushed me" to update my hardware

What an awesome setup....the monitors seem quite high though, do you have to look 'up' at them or is it just the angle that the picture was taken from?

Thanks I custom built the closet for the purpose of sim piloting (and other computer activities) -- its my pit, so to speak. I can shut the doors and it disappears if I need to "clean up" for company. Of course, I keep things in perspective -- the folks in the "Pit Builders' Forum" live on a different planet. And one guy here buys his own A-10 -- a different universe The center of the monitors is almost exactly at eye level. That is higher than normal. But, it makes for good posture to sit up straight and look straight ahead (as one might in a real airplane). The MFDs are at normal desk top height. The keyboard and HOTAS are barely clear my legs (lower than a normal desktop) -- very comfortable height for me.

I'm at that dangerous stage where I'm finding all sorts of ways to justify the Warthog cost. Thinking of a EEPROM project or something where I can hook it up to a mower, i.e. 'it's to help with the garden!' etc.

The Thrustmaster MFCDs make accessorizing fun, too. ------- This weekend I figured out why my Saitek Combat Pro Flight Pedals seemed like they needed calibration or trimming - sometimes it's a real fight to keep going straight down the runway on takeoff. Turns out that a press of the toe brake can leave the brake in an 'On' state causing the aircraft to pull to one side. Another press of that brake and it will release, and travel will be straight again. WC

I found this adept interesting, it seems very simple. Thank you !!!!

Saville, This Thrustmaster RCS was discontinued around 2000 (or early), they are gameport (DB-15 connector) - obsolete a more than a decade now. Maybe you find then cheap in eBay and is easy to upgrade for USB - but require DIY skill with solder. But this pedal model has only rudder axis, no bakes (and you know "tip-toe-brakes is the most important control in rudder pedals). Some pictures BTW - If you are looking for "best" pedals (as the topic - now obsolete say), today are: VKB T-Rudder Baur F models MFG Crosswind Slaw Viper RX Prices from ~230$ to 550$ in the crescent order. All in metal or composite, dozen of ball bearings, contactless sensor, 12/14 bits USB controller (for reference CH Pedals is 8 bits), adjustable angles, and important: CAM center system with possibility to add (motorcycle steering) dampers in some models.

+1 for Saitek Pro Combat Pedals. I've had the CH Pro rudder pedals for years and they were OK, but too narrow. Switched to the Saitek pedals and they are so much better, I would never go back. As for slipping and sliding, I bought a rubber kitchen drawer liner to put under the pedals and they do not move AT ALL. It's a small thing that made a huge difference.
