So frustrated that I thought I'd share as part of the therapy. Got FSX with ORBX and REX OD tried every farking tweak under the sun with limited success as the damn auto gen trees kept farking things up for me (stutters). Seriously have spent the last week trying to get this POS working smoothly. I am running a i5 2500k with a 6970 2GB card ffs its just ridiculous how can I be experiencing stutters?!??! Its an old game by now and I can run ROF with everything on MAX without a prob. Sorry for the rant but what a waste of time more than anything. Microsoft you really did build a #%&*$#, #%&*$#, flight simulator. God help us when FLIGHT comes out.....

Ahhhh that's better.

FSX.cfg manager/tweaker by Bojote

It helps a lot for better FPS.
Make a backup of yours 1st

I can understand your frustration and the sad thing is that when you do eventually get it running well it doesn't look as good as some of the games that have come along since and play better on lesser specs.

I enjoy FSX but the stock scenery looks pretty rubbish now and is only saved by expensive add-ons.

Having said that it is good for learning plane systems and navs etc.

HAve you OCed your CPU?

For FSX 3,4 GHz is around the minimum.

That said, even with the system below I have stutters at times, but than I have a #%&*$# of addons.

Hate to say it, but MS had a good reason to give the Aces Studio the heave-ho. You found out the hard way.

FSX is definitely CPU hungry. I didn't get good results until I OC'd my i7 to 4.0 Ghz. Not the most effecient Microsoft programming.......

I have a dual core i7 3.95 GH processor with a Radeon 1gb 5770 graphics card. 8 gb of memory. Runs great. Got REX and the ORBX Northwest Pacific. Favorite place to fly.
Runs smooth. Looks great. Don't have my system all junked up, though. Lean and mean. I use enditall to shut down all running systems. An absolute must. I always know when I've forgotten to run it. I'll go to fly, and I'll be getting little burps and hiccups. Oops. Get out and yeah, forgot to turn off the background programs. You've got to do this. FSX demands all of your computers' attention. It's like Glenn Close in fatal attraction.
I'm able to run the payware, Manhattan New York, scenery, with that helicopter tour with no trouble at all. I had it with my older , single core PC, and it was immposible, of course, without turning the specs down so low, that it wasn't even worth it.
You have to keep your system defragged, too. She's a demanding *itch!

I was surprised myself. When I brought home this PC, it was one of the first things I tried after installing FSX and all of my add-ons. I'd never been able to run it, before.

Still running my "old" X6800 Core Duo, but @ 3.73 and a GTX 260/216 and FSX runs very smooth with only an occasional autogen popup. I have all of ORBX titles, REX v2, Global 2010 and many payware aircraft and enjoy them tremendously and I'm running in Dx10-Preview as well.

FSX is cpu dependent; o.c. if you can. FSX will benefit from 4gb of ram with a 64bit os, but that's it. 6,8,12 etc ram will not make any difference in performance nor will ram speed.

Keep AI Traffic to an absolute minimum. Medium and up aircraft traffic settings eat cpu cycles.

For hardware, one of the biggest aids to running smoothly is the hd. Defrag is very important, but so is the placement of FSX and the page file. >> IF << you have a defrag program like O&O or Disktrix, you can place FSX on the outer track followed by page file and then your boot sector. This will have a noticeble impact on how FSX runs and goes along way in minimizing stutters and autogen popup. If you have 2 drives, non-raid array, disable the page file on d1 and place it on the first track of d2. The heads won't have to traverse to place and retrieve files. Also, if you don't use hibernate function, disable it. You'll regain all disk space that function takes up on the hd and it's all on the outer most tracks.

Start with Bojote's tweaker first to get a good baseline and then head over to Simforums for more config tweaks on autogen, scenery and lighting.

MY pc specs are an Evga 680i-sli, X6800 @ 3.73, fsb is stock, 8gb PC-6400 locked @ 800 and an Evga GTX 260/216.

I thoroughly enjoy FSX, but I had to invest some time and tweaks to get there.

Let me digress on a statement I made concerning ram speed. It didn't come out quite the way I wanted.

FSX will benefit from ram speed when the ram is as fast as the board is rated @ fsb. O.C.'ing the ram in and of its self will not improve FSX performance.

God you've got a long wait for Flight to be enjoyable by anyone other than a kid who likes arcade games. What they will probably do is release it for free or minimal cost with paid for plane and expansion addons to a very basic game similar to the RoF model. Enjoy FSX - its by far the best of the series and the only MSFS game I've actually played a great deal and really enjoyed.

I wish I could enjoy the game, I do in small bursts then it micro stutters and I want to scream. When it's smooth flying though it is great especially with the addon scenery and REX OD. Unfortunately it s rarely like that and like I ve said before I deserve better performance, my computer deserves better performance. It's a virtual insult....lol

Mmm I was happily getting around 90 fps, then it started raining as I landed in sydney in the notorious for framerates pmdg j-41, dropped down to 8fps while I taxi'd. Oh well

This tool made all the difference in the world for me. Also External FPS Limiter, and an autogen tweak suggested over at the Orbx forums. Do a little searching, you'll find this stuff, and will be amazed at the improvement. smile

Tried it all, I researched it for a week, found conflicting tweaks, trial and errored (?) them all etc etc etc. It did improve things but still get micro stutters. What's the autogen tweak? Is that changing the UTF file size or the tree density one, tried them both .... nada.

I think that's the one which limits the number of trees and buildings per scenery cell. Just change your cfg file.

One suggestion:

[TERRAIN]
TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=800
TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=3000

I recommend flusifix for fiddling with FSX. It`s a freeware tool. F.e. said trees and buildings can be set in there without poking around manually in the FSX.cfg.

I have flusifix v5. You should use it too, as it is completely in English (if you make the right decision on first start-up :D). You only need to unzip it, no installer there. I always trough it into the FSX main directory.

The tool behind your link is good. Copy your current FSX.cfg before though, in case something goes wrong.

Have you tried Drver Cleaner 2? You may have a driver issue. I'm running an AMD Phenom X2 955,Asus MoBo and an HD5770 GPU and get great results.
