Thought it might be cool to have a little SimHQ fun challenge with the new Retro pack for Race On/Race Pro...

2 races using the new (and I might add, excellent) Hill Climb Stage... 1 run with the BMW CSL from the Retro Max car category and 1 run with the BMW 2002 from the Retro Cool car catigory... This is just for fun so use the SimHQ honor system, (but if your able might want to post a screen of the results)...

Post your name
Race 1 BMW CSL result
Race 2 BMW 2002 result

Here's the track and where you'll find the cars... just replay here in this thread with your results... due by July 15th Noon Eastern.
You can update as needed till the deadline.

Remmeber... Honor System.

Nice to see RACE 07 getting some tracktime here - though I haven't bought anything after the GTRevo add-on release.

I won't keep buying add-ons to it in its current form, but I would love to do some GT/WTCC racing with it thumbsup

Good luck with it.

I'm up for some of that.
I'll post some times in a couple of days once I've learned the track better, still at the bouncing of the barriers stage ATM.

After undergoing what I believe our American friends call a "procedure" I am unable to drive for a few days.. but I will install this today as I love the Race series.

I would love it if we could get a little action going here using the Race series but it seems the modular nature of rFactor and the quality of gtr2 (understandably) rule the roost on SimHQ. Pity.

Wouldn't Autolog be fun for this?
I'm in, assuming I don't embarrass myself too much working on it. LOL
Screenshots are easy enough, Fraps is free for that.

Agreed, great idea, this Retro pack is good fun, I just picked it up and I'm loving it, the hillclimb is like a big rally stage.

My best times on the hillclimb so far (using auto clutch and corner markers until I learn the track better):
Kludger:
BMW CSL: 3:18:893

Time for a mini-rant...

This is what bothers me about SimHQ online racing. Every time there is an organized race the guys NEVER use one of the zillion "stock" automobiles. You know, the ones EVERYBODY has. It's always some new or obscure mod that hardly anyone has. That drives me crazy.

If you're going to do Race ON, how about one of the WTCC years? Or STCC? Or American Muscle? You know, one of the car sets that came with the game? That way, no one has to go hunting for the new or obscure add-on. Many of those for rFactor don't even come with self-executable installers. I find this approach very frustrating.

A zillion cars for Race07/GTR Evo/RAce On but never a race with the cars that come with the sims. This is why I find it so difficult to participate, and I'm sure others do too.

Now a "retro" add-on. Didn't come with the sims. SIGH. I've never heard of it.

I'm not against trying new/add-on cars. Not at all. I just don't undestand why no matter whether it is GTR2, Race On, or rFactor, the SimHQ races never seem to be with the cars that absolutely everybody has if they simply installed the retail sim.

Here's what's really ironic. When I suggest playing Ghost Recon Classic online with one of the more complete total conversions, SimHQ has the opposite reaction: let's stick with the stock maps and gear. I give up. banghead

1. I put this up BECAUSE of the new retro pack and hill climb stage in the game. So it makes perfect sense to be about the new add-on.

2. Nothing says you can't organize something, anything yourselve... SimHQ is a gaming information site with a little organization in play...we can't please and satisfy everyones desires when it comes to gaming... hell we gave you a forum, calender, and a teamspeak server... organize something yourself.

3. Nobody shot down your idea for a GR server with a total conversion, we simply were seeking feedback on a server, and said at the beginning, the first month or two would be plain vanilla, so we could a) relive the true classic, and b) not overwhelm new members/players.

so you quit? quit what? SimHQ gives you everything you need to organize and play computer/videos games... all for free. DO SOMETHING!

I got the add on today and did a few laps. No where near the times I think I can do, but this is with H-shifter.
Always use the paddles in all sims, but thought this was a good time to re try the shifter. Just wish I could heel and toe, that would make it even better and more fun.

I don't own the STCC or the other pack that was mentioned, and I hadn't really driven Race07/GTREvo in a long time (since most of these tracks were converted to netkarPro), and the touring cars don't really interest me enough to have picked up STCC or STCC2, but the combination of the new hillclimb track and retro cars brought me back and the bit of friendly competition is fun, hard to complain after all it costs just $6.99 the price of lunch at McDonalds...

I tried the original Race07/GTREvo cars on the hill climb and the FF on the Retro cars feel better/stronger to me than the originals for some reason, so it seems like they are improving the car physics or FF modeling from their earlier cars, too bad they couldn't get a license to do a new retro Porsche, but this track is fun with the GTL for GTREvo mod and the Porsche 935 mod too.

When my Fanatec shifter arrives I will put up some H-shifter times and maybe even give the heel toe a try. An autolog RaceRoom feature would be really cool.

Just an FYI, I know most don't hang out on the Simbin forums. The Retro pack isn't a "full-on" Simbin project, it's a labor of love by a few employees, mainly done in their free time. I don't think I'd say it's got little creativity involved considering this is something offered at a budget price from the actual developer of the game. I didn't get anything like this from ISI. wink
Kudos to Simbin for continuing to offer more content for a great product and not just depending on modders as a free workforce to do it for them.

what makes people decide to post their opinion on the add-on, in a friendly competition thread... wouldn't the announcement of the add-on thread be more approperate... if you don't like it... then don't race it and don't post your time here... no lost.

I don't think it is that bad, Piotr.
It is a wide road, but if you try to get the max out of the BMW CSL you run out of room in no time.

I think you have to look at this more like the Bergrennen in Germany. Check some of the clips on Youtube. Those roads are not this wide, but not climbing a lot either.

I went back and did some laps using "retro" authentic heel-toe and h-shifter no auto clutch, instead of left foot braking, and here are my updated times:

Kludger:
BMW CSL: 3:18:893 LFB
BMW CSL: 3:20.764 HnT + H-Shift

BMW 2002: 3:33:576 LFB
BMW 2002: 3:37.756 HnT + H-Shift

Immersion is much better, but it definitely costs me a few seconds, I sweat more and make more mistakes, great fun though, need more practice...

I should give right foot braking a try again. It would be fun if you couldn't shift without clutch. The way I do it now is without auto clutch, but also without using the clutch during shifting. I only use the clutch for starts and when I spin.

I think that might actually be realistic, from what I understand some sports car transmissions can be shifted without using the clutch as long as you are good at blipping and matching revs so it doesn't grind when it syncs and engages... I actually recall doing that accidentally in my motorcycle when I was in a panic situation and being surprised that it worked...

The game must be doing some sort of modeling for that as I've had some missed shifts which I thought were caused by my clutch timing being off but maybe it was something else.

Right foot braking feels normal in a real car, but in sim racing definitely takes some concentration after all these years of LFB and especially all the sims which reward using both gas and brake at the same time to keep the car steady at the limit of traction in corners (iRacing, RBR etc.), pretty rewarding though since that's what I would need to do to drive any decent sport car fast on a real track, maybe someday I can try heelntoe in real life, all out family cars are automatics right now.
