Hey, guys,

Those colors came from DSA--there are fifty million theories/opinions regarding the colors. His came off the RFC capture report of D.III 2015/16 which he then said he matched to a Methuen chart that he Xeroxed in b&w and cross-referenced with photographs. I've since learned that if one doesn't know the type of film used in the photograph the results can vary significantly.

Thanks for the link, Elephant. I'll check it out.

I don't think the pale green is too light on MvR's DII, it's just that I don't ridiculously overweather my skins as do many. I used to fly 30-year-old unhangared Cessnas at work that weren't as weathered as some skins representing two-month old hangared airplanes. Still, what do I know? If you feel the green is too light, chalk it up to its ultraviolet exposure. Smile2 At least I got rid of that black expansion tank on the engine!

Yes I noticed, but forgot to mention...
Gives a little OFF touch to the D.II, isn't it?
I agree with you about over-weathering, I kind of like skins to be a little worn on the other hand.
And back to topic I remind you the British report on the captured Simon's plane that "recognises" the reddish brown of the three color camo as different colors for te upper and lower wing, meaning that some degree of photo-oxidation must have been occurred...

Anyway, to save you from extra work Graf, here is a little mod I made that transforms the default OAW Albatros to a Johannisthal one:
I use JSGME for best results if you want to go back immediately with no harm whatsoever.
It contains a new default Johannisthal skin with edited alpha channel that eliminates the frontal footstep, (I used your latest one as basis, the cockpit footstep is the square one, with offset radiator made more sence).
The actual skin is an edited by me three tone camo one, I found in my skins folder, probably by Panthercules or Ansirial, but it doesn't matter, anyway.
Also an edited bump mapping dds file that also eliminates the engine step.

For the others who will want to try it I recommend JSGME, (JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler).
Extract the AlbatrosD3_Johannisthal folder into your MODS folder and enable via JSGME.
Otherwise copy the data folder you will find into the AlbatrosD3_Johannisthal folder and paste it to your game's main directory and let the folders merge.

Although I had edited the bump map I had forgot to edit the alpha channel as well that's way I could still see the step.
Problem solved!

Sorry, didn't post any photos...

The new default D.III I've included, (hope Graf will make a new one)!

From certain angles and in under extreme lighting conditions the step is still visible, though...

Graf's skins under the mod with new alpha channels.

Allmenroeder

Wolff with footstep, (historical), with the proper alpha the modded bump doesn't show any anomalies.

Wolff 2

Schaefer

cheers

Since this is now the "The Albatros D.III for Dummies" thread I might as well ask something slightly off-topic: The table elephant_ posted shows 5 Albatroses with "basket-weave fuselage" for Nov. 1916.

Hallo,

According to the DIII Datafile, five D.IIIs were outfitted with basket-weave fuselages that were formed of "broad, interwoven wooden strips which could be strengthened by being sewn together and sewn to the fuselage frame." Two such fuselages, one covered with fabric and one without, failed load test requirements 4-5 July 1917. They then strengthened the weaved fuselages with interior longerons and frames but the strengthened fuselages then had the same weight as the standard semi-monoque fuselages and thus served no benefit. Therefore, the idea was scrapped.

Just got back from a good game of softball with fam and friends. Went and saw The Green Lantern with my son and nephew. Needed a break...I've been working on another template the past two days but am now free!

Back to work on the Jasta 11 Johannisthal D.IIIs. Where's my coffee? biggrin
