There is a boundry layer between us and deep space.

Pretty interesting stuff, but I thought that Star Trek was talking about the edge of the galaxy, not the solar system. Of course, if there's a boundary between the sun and the space between the stars within our galaxy, there's very possibly a boundary between the galaxy and deep space.

Oop's I think you are right. Even the original series was about the edge of the galaxy having a barrier.

Of course the problem with ST was that it was visible, so we'd be able to see it ourselves if there was.

It was visible on the viewscreen, but IIRC the viewscreen's image was a composite of different wavelengths. Interstellar space wouldn't have much in the way of visible light to see by, after all, even if intensified like in a night vision scope.

Spock's catchphrase. Before catchphrases were cool.

They gave Data "intriguing" to be different, but instead it just sounded like someone used a thesaurus on Spock's dialogue.

I had to smile at the scene in the new ST movie when Spock sits down in the pilot's seat of his ship for the "first" time and says "Fascinating".

Zachary Quinto was fantastic as Spock! I can't wait to see the next ST movie!

The casting was pretty much perfect for the new Trek. The film could have very easily been mediocre had the wrong actors been cast. Quinto, Urban, Pine, Greenwood, Pegg, Saldana, Bana and Cho were all absolutely great.

Not like we'll be seeing Bana again.

I noticed you omitted Yelchin. smile

He's not a bad actor but he wasn't the best pick for Chekov.

Who would you have picked?

I liked the fact that Bruce Greenwood played Captain/Admiral Pike. He's got screen presence in spades.

Greenwood has been outstanding in everything that I've seen him in so far.

As for who else I would have cast as Chekov, that's a pretty tough question!

I can't think of any specific actors right now but I just know there has to be some actors out there who look a lot more like the original Chekov and can do a better Russian accent. smile

I don't know that appearance is really important. After all, Pegg looked nothing like Doohan, Saldana sure doesn't look like Nichols, and Cho doesn't look like Takei.

As for accent, it's funny that you mention it since his is real, albeit overly thick.
"He was born Anton Viktorovich Yelchin on March 11, 1989, in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia, Soviet Union. His father, Viktor Yelchin, and his mother, Irina, were a successful pair of professional figure-skaters in Leningrad, and his grandfather was also a professional sportsman, a soccer player. "
Walter Koenig was of Lithuanian/Jewish descent, hence his original name Koenigsberg.

Ah, fascinating. The same as the former capital of East Prussia which of course is now known as Kaliningrad.

Karl Urban nearly stole the whole film. Brilliant casting on him as McCoy.

I am a Star Trek 'lifer' so I was pretty scared when they did the re-boot, but I think it was excellent.

+1 - loved the reboot, and was expecting the worse.
