There is a boundry layer between us and deep space.

Pretty interesting stuff, but I thought that Star Trek was talking about the edge of the galaxy, not the solar system. Of course, if there's a boundary between the sun and the space between the stars within our galaxy, there's very possibly a boundary between the galaxy and deep space.

Oop's I think you are right. Even the original series was about the edge of the galaxy having a barrier.

Of course the problem with ST was that it was visible, so we'd be able to see it ourselves if there was.

It was visible on the viewscreen, but IIRC the viewscreen's image was a composite of different wavelengths. Interstellar space wouldn't have much in the way of visible light to see by, after all, even if intensified like in a night vision scope.
