Pity Dirt does not support Windows 7...

As in..it doesn't run on W7..? Or it just isn't listed as being a Win7 game because it came out before W7?

As in needs some tweaking to run... and then still crashes a lot.

Check the Steam forums for Dirt series, the tweaks are in there.

Haven't heard good things abt Mafia 2. Not really open ended like the GTA series where you can basically roam the city in between plot missions.

It's excellent - played it right through, which I very rarely do.
You have to like the music and cars though.
OTOH I really disliked the last few GTA games.
Vice City was the last good one.

I'm not having any luck getting it installed. Says it's missing a file. At work now and can't remember the error message.

Are you getting this error from the launcher or is this before the launcher is installed?

The launcher has a repair function that should find and download missing files.
