Any opinions on this one? Not interested in debating the price, I'd rather pay $55 for something good than $30 for something I don't play. I've been a fan of the combat mission series from the beginning but never got into shock force very much.

I am in your camp. CMSF is not worth buying unless one really likes that setting but I really like CMx1 and CM:B4N.

If you enjoy WWII tactical wargaming then I would say buy it for the $55. You will get your money's worth imho! There are many improvements over CMSF that I am enjoying.

check it out!

A great game... if you like the series... a must buy. IMO

(and the few problems it does have, battlefront will fix... takes time to make masterpieces. lol)

What's the DRM on the download version? Can I install it on my desktop and my laptop too?

Just purchased and downloading... can't wait. The reviews and recommendations for this one are very promising.

OK... it's good. Very good. Spent the last few days with the missions and quick missions and now I'm 2 deep into one of the campaigns. My only minor quibble would be that the controls are clunky ( well no moreso than the other combat mission games to be sure. ) Infantry behavior is much improved, the unit spotting system is outstanding. Runs fairly well on my laptop with the graphics slightly above medium, the desktop system has no problem running everything flat out.

I caved and got it too after playing the demo. I must say that a lot of things that I didn't like about shock force are gone. I really like the Normandy setting and with those campaigns I will have stuff to play until Christmas. Just lost a campaign after five battles, easy company are just too run down and I made the mistake of using up all that 105mm fire support in the previous missions. Even my 60mikes are empty ... pretty hard lesson. I'll redo the thing after I try another campaign.

That bocage country is really hard to navigate. Due to me using up all the pioneer blast charges during the first missions, I'm left with the "long way round"-tactic ... eventually getting pinned between a bunker and an MG in a ditch. I've been in Normandy myself and spent an evening running around the countryside a few clicks from the beaches. I was trying to get a feel what those soldiers went through (Oh, c'mon you would have done it too). Those hedges are thick as hell and then you have the earthen berms that they grow on, must have been very claustrophobic fighting. I think the game gives that feeling too. A lot of times you think things are going great and then all of a sudden you get careless and torn to shreds in seconds.

Still sad with no WEGO in multiplayer over internet, but as great as this game is in single player I just don't care anymore. I just love watching those little guys dealing pixelated death to each other. I find myself replaying those extra intense turns several times over.

This looks awesome!

I loved the other Combat Missions WW2 games.

Just bought it and downloading as I speak biggrin

There are some great videos on youtube, one with an American Guy talking his way through a full mission. The vid is 1 hour long. At the end I had to buy biggrin

I just finished and won the panzer marsch campaign and it was good fun. I then downloaded the Devils' descent campaign from battlefront and it is pretty classy. You get choices to make between the missions (wait for backup or not type dealies) and that is very innovative. There is a narrative to each mission which is spot on and really brings the campaign to life. Download at once if you haven't done so already!

I totally agree about the 'devil's decent' campaign, was a lot of fun and I think a great campaign for starting off with this game. Not nearly as overwhelming (at least for me) as some of the other campaigns in terms of the number of units.

The last two missions were a bit too easy but other than that I enjoyed the challenge. In my opinion It's more interesting trying to get zero casualties than ending up with a win and a shredded unit. This campaign was the first where I've used split squads.
Had some quite epic "last stands" when sections ended up cut off from each other. Good thing those paras shrug off bullets like batman.

Had one instance where a machine gun section of two guys held a house against several squads of jerry infantry. One had the front window looking over a street and the other covered the back door. Both kept dropping guys to the left and right, even one or two who made it into the house. I managed to sneak some ammo bearers into a nearby building a got some good flanking shots which broke the garden part of the german attack. All made it through the mission.

In another building I brought up some guys with a little ammo for a poor guy holding out on his own. The guys gave him five (5) rounds and I swear he then promptly moved to the back of the building letting the new guys do the fighting. It looked pretty funny.

It's such a great game.

Been playing for a couple of weeks now and I love it. There are a few things missing from the old games which is a shame.

Played bois de baugin as Germans last night. 9 US Tanks were a handful but I moved some fox holes and Panzerschrecks to the forward edge of the Orchard and created a massive kill zone with a pre-prepared artillery strike point for good measure. Destroyed half the tanks as they attempted to break in to the orchard. Things weren't looking good as they over ran and destroyed the Panzerschreck teams and they took up position in the orchard waiting for their infantry to assault the village. The turning point was when one brave rifle team destroyed another Sherman at point blank using the tanks own smoke as cover. I then moved my Tank destroyers up and in the engagement destroyed a further two tanks but lost one. Then wheeled around them by pushing through the village and took out the last two tanks from behind. They sent waves of infantry and nearly over ran the village several times but I beat them off. Was lots of fun biggrin

I bought CMBN some weeks ago and really love it. It's a shame, that the game is completely ignored by the big mainstream gaming magazins, not a single review so far, just a number of reviews on some smaller gaming sites. I think it really deserves more attention.

I played CM1 for years and even with a new computer that could play more advanced games I was still playing it up to not that long ago.

Hopefully we're going to see many more add ons. I believe they're going to revisit the Eastern front soon.

I asked that question... will most likely be a different, complete game... the Eastern Front... but we will get 2 or 3 add-ons for the Western Front...ie: The Commonwealth has already been announced. The games will stay divided in western and eastern... and probably Africa. (Just assuming here.)

So out of curiosity, how does CMBN compare to TOW2?

TOW2 is fun but CMBN is far deeper and more challenging. CMBN: Better AI, more & better maps, more depth. TOW2: better graphics and is easier to learn. Both good in their own way but if you could only play one, it should be CMBN.
