Not the joke from a few months ago--apparently the Wargaming (World of Tanks) crew is working on a free to play "flight simulator" of some sort. I'm not expecting a high-fidelity sim, but I have enjoyed WoT quite a bit over the last few weeks, so I think it's pretty exciting. At the very least, maybe it'll get the genre a little more exposure--if we can get a million people (WoT just hit that number) playing even a bare bones flight simulator, that's gotta be good for flight sim developers overall.

I don't know what the external links policy here is, but I got the story from PCGamer...there's really no details to speak of though.

If it's set up the way WOT works, I'm going to assume you start off with a Piper Cub and hope to stay alive in a sky full of F-15s so you can get a better airplane.

I think this will be great, I really enjoy World of Tanks.

If they can just give it a little more depth, that would be fantastic. Perhaps a map of europe and you are given various missions in different locations to move a conflict line back or forth or to take a city, etc.

The time period will encompass 1930-1950's,apparently. So maybe not Piper Cub to F-15 mismatches, but perhaps F2 Buffalo to F-86 mismatches. There's some sort of global clan battle system worked into WoT, but I've never used it because it's for "clans" only, and those guys don't want you if you don't have a top-tier tank. If they made a more global faction system that everyone could hop into, that help a lot as far as depth goes.

Even if they don't, though--matchmade 15 on 15 dogfights? I love Il-2 but hopping into a match in progress just isn't the same as getting a fresh, even start every single game.
