I highly recommend SWAT 4 (Gold ver. w/ Stetchkov Syndicate expansion). I've just been getting back into it and it's been a blast (although sometimes frustrating :D). I'd also recommend DL'ing the Sheriff's Special Forces mod: http://www.shacknews.com/file/20373/swat-4-the-stetchkov-syndicate-sheriffs-special-forces-realism-vIt includes many improvements to gameplay, AI, weapons, and more missions. It's also very popular and you can even find servers still running it. The Commandos series was also very fun from what I remember...might have to fire that one up too hehe

Why not try Hidden & Dangerous 2 (with Sabre Squadron expansion)? It's similar to the first Ghost Recon and Rainbow 6, if you don't mind the WWII setting that is. The high point for me is the beautiful mission design through the SP campaign; being able to complete them in numerous ways (think: the Hitman games). One of the best games I ever played. A pity that PC shooters like this are a rarity nowadays... the deliberate dumbing-down seems to be the top priority for most games publishers in recent years; Operation Flashpoint:Red River being a case in point. Well, the gameplay mechanics in Hidden & Dangerous 2 are fairly similar to the ORIGINAL Operation Flashpoint, so if that's what you like, you won't go far wrong with it. The WWII setting was just the icing on the cake for me. Worth keeping your eye on the Invasion '44 WWII mod for ArmA2 as well, I believe they're working on a full SP campaign.

More support for SWAT 4 & Stet expansion. More Rainbow THAN Rainbow. If you want to go all the way with large scale action, then Arma2. If you want similar but more relaxed, then OFDR/OFRR. I actually like the pc versions of GRAW and GRAW2 as well, much more fun than the console versions. It's not that open but still fairly satisfying with nice controls. If you decide to go online, there's America's Army. You could probably find Close Combat First to Fight pretty cheap. Pretty good squad shooter that does try to be realistic. Check youtube for some gameplay on it. It's a love it/hate it game though. One of the few that includes some civilians.

Here's another for H&D2. They don't make them like they used to. Great game with tactical control either directly among your unit or using the tactical mode. Great variety of mission locations too. +3

SWAT 4, no question. Best SP experience money can buy.

H&D2 with Sabre Squadron Expansion and ARMA II would be my recommendations, H&D2's realism is still unsurpassed to this day as far as I'm concerned and its the only tactical shooter that I recall that simulated realistic combat diver type operations in a couple missions. ARMA II is great as an all around tactical sim and with the various mods such as INV 44 and UNSUNG, there's something for everybody.

My 2 cents:
Agree with the SWAT 4 suggestions. I personally didn't like the stock campaigns in ARMA 2, but the amount of user made missions and campaigns make up for it.
I really enjoyed Operation Flashpoint: Red River. It was designed for coop play, but it is still enjoyable singleplayer.
I refuse to buy a flight sim that I have no interest in playing, on the off chance that MAYBE someday they'll make the one I really want to play.
