I was asked earlier by PM if I was close to the Family, unfortunately I do not know them personally I am friends with Kyle Franklin on FaceBook. I learned of the tragedy here on the SimHQ Community Forum and followed it through Kyles' Posts after he friended me and I hope someday I'll meet him in person. Amanda was an amazing young woman as you will read in the following also from my Facebook wall. I grieve for the loss of such an incredible young person who accomplished a lot in the span of her 25 years, more than most do in a lifetime. I'm not one for causes, and rarely get worked up over such things but this one extraordinary life is worth celebrating. _Bong

Amanda Michelle (Younkin) Franklin
by Franklin's Flying Circus on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 6:44pm

Amanda Michelle (Younkin) Franklin, 25, of Neosho, MO., passed away at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, on May 27, 2011, due to complications from burns received in an aviation accident.

Amanda was born on March 14, 1986 in Springdale, AR., to Jeanie and the late Bobby Younkin. She was a very accomplished gymnast, musician, animal welfare advocate, and aviation enthusiast. After learning to fly at the age of 16, Amanda became an accomplished multi-engine and tail wheel pilot; she became proficient in over 15 different types of airplanes.

As a little girl, Amanda traveled with her father Bobby to airshows across the country. It was there that she was first exposed to airshow wingwalking and met the future love of her life, wingwalker Kyle Franklin. She and Kyle started dating on May 22, 2004. The couple traveled the airshow circuit with their fathers as Kyle continued his wingwalking career. They were married on October 18, 2005 and along with her brother Matt, took over the multi-family airshow business that their fathers left behind. Amanda had managed the brothers’ airshow sponsors and bookings since 2005. She became Matt’s full-time announcer in 2007 and Kyle’s full-time wingwalker in 2009.

Amanda was patriotic and had the utmost respect for those who put themselves in harm’s way in order to protect our freedom. She joined the Commemorative Air Force and also participated for several years in a World War Two style pinup calendar to help preserve the heritage of our country’s fallen heroes. Amanda was also a huge supporter of women in aviation. As one herself, she coached and encouraged young girls that she spoke with at airshows to pursue their dreams of becoming a pilot and to never let anyone hold them back. She was a member of the Arkansas ninety-nines, a group of women pilots that dates back to the nineteen thirties. Amanda made a huge impact in a short amount of time on millions of aviation patrons, airshow fans, and humanity in general. She inspired millions from the young to the young at heart with her amazing wingwalking feats, charming personality, and calendar girl smile. She will be sorely missed by countless people the world over.

She is survived by her husband Kyle Franklin of Neosho, MO., mother Jeanie Younkin of Fayetteville, AR, brother and sister-in-law Matt and Michelle Younkin and niece Kimberly of Siloam Springs, AR, grandfather Jim Younkin and his wife Ada of Fayetteville AR, and extended family, all of Fayetteville AR, mother-in-law Audean Stroud and her husband Steve of Ruidoso, NM, and the Franklin extended family. She was also survived by her “four legged children”, Rocky, Rambo, Marvin, and Peggy. In addition to grandparents, Amanda was preceded in death by her father Bobby Younkin, and father-in-law Jimmy Franklin.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 Tuesday, June 7 at the First Baptist Church in Fayetteville, AR. Interment will follow at the Fairview Memorial Gardens Cemetery also in Fayetteville. There will be a reception at the Fayetteville Country Club to follow. An online RSVP is requested for those wanting to attend the reception, please go to www.younkinair.com for more information.

In lieu of flowers, Amanda would insist that you donate to your local ASPCA, Humane Society, or Animal Shelter.

Amazing tribute to such a beautiful young woman. May she RIP and the painful burns she endured for to long are now gone.

Sad fact, are there any other woman wing walkers out there ? She will be missed by all air show enthusiasts.

There must be 5 or 6 now on You Tube. What an Amazing Young Lady and such a tragedy for the Aviation World that these young people nowadays are few and far between that can carry on the traditions of the past. Before too much longer no one will know who the Ninety-Nines are or see an old Warbird and have a clue what it's importance is in History, sure little boys will always play with toy war machines but how many little girls will want to be Amelia Earhart. No, they would want to be Amanda Franklin. I only know of a handful of current Women Aviators without Searching Google, Patty Wagstaff, maybe a couple Astronauts and they're Scientists primarily, how many are just Aviators? I really think they should make a movie about her, it would be a better story than the stuff they put out these days and he's going to need help paying those medical bills, they will be astronomical.

Some new developments in the aftermath of Amanda's death.

Quote:

"Amanda Switch"

Some wonderful members of our Airshow Family, Buck Roetman, Mike Stewart and Kari Morris, have found a effective smoke oil cut-off switch for airshow performers. Some of us are calling these type of switches the "Amanda Switch". I can't thank them enough for their hard work on this. Below is their press release that I fully support in every way.

Kyle Franklin

Collaboration Yields Solution to Reduce Risk of Post-Impact Fires for Air Show Performers

(Atlanta, GA) January 12, 2012 – Aerobatic pilots Buck Roetman of Wild Horse Aviation, and Mike Stewart, Flight Lead for Team RV, announce an important safety solution for professional air show pilots to reduce the risk of a post-impact fire: an inertia activated shut-off switch installed in the ground wire to fuel and smoke oil pumps. Roetman said the easy installation of this inexpensive switch is an "elegant and simple solution that every performer in the air show industry should consider."

Roetman and Stewart sought this solution in response to the forced landing last March of Kyle and Amanda Franklin in which the smoke oil pump fueled a fire that caused fatal burns to Amanda. In the immediate aftermath of the accident, Roetman, who is an International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) ACE (Aerobatic Competency Evaluation) pilot, and ICAS President John Cudahy informally discussed the need to prevent post-impact fires in cases where fuel tanks are not ruptured.

Initial discussions among several pilots included the merits of various shut-off switches such as a GPS switch, EGT switch, and oil pressure switch. Ultimately, Stewart found and suggested the use of the inertia switch which is used in auto racing and acts like a circuit breaker, but is tripped by high g's (10g or higher) associated with impact.

According to Jim Hillyer at Pegasus Auto Racing Supplies, a top supplier of the switch, the product has been used successfully for years on IndyCars and on high-end production cars with fuel injection systems that engage high pressure fuel pumps.

Concerned about inadvertently tripping the switch, Stewart and Roetman installed the device on their aircraft – Stewart's RV-Super 8 and Roetman's modified Christen Eagle – and tested high g maneuvers as well as hard landings. The switch did not activate under a +8 g load or -5 g load.

Kyle Franklin is installing this equipment in all of his aircraft, and urges every air show and competition pilot to add this or something similar. The g-meter in his Waco stopped at 11g during his hard landing. "This little switch could save you and your loved ones a lifetime of pain and grief. I truly feel if I had this switch on March 12 my beautiful wife Amanda would still be here," said Franklin.

Stewart reported that all 12 pilots on Team RV have installed the light weight switch as part of pre-season aircraft maintenance procedures. "Air show performers keep safety at the forefront always, and when accidents do happen, they happen to friends in this tight community and not simply to 'someone else.' As a result we take it to task to learn as much as possible from incidents and to find ways to improve safety where possible," said Stewart.

Wild Horse Aviation specializes in aircraft acquisition, maintenance, fabrication and export.

Team RV is the world's largest precision formation and formation aerobatics air show team.
