Hi guys,

I'm trying to build a unijoint joystick. I received my xj650 unijoint today, but I can't figure out the life of me how to remove the caps on the joints. It seems like usually there are retaining clips, but this joint has a cover and I can't pry it out.

What do I do :-(

Those caps are hardened steel. Try dremmel-tool or simillar and use a small cutting disk to remove caps. Good luck!

Instead of snap rings, they have used a punch to dimple the edge of the flange over the bearing cap.
(a cheap way of doing it)

You will have to use a dremel to remove the dimplied tab so the bearing cap can slide out the hole.
The cover you see, is the top of the bearing cap.

Recoilfix, why would you try to remove the cap?

Is the joint too stiff?

Also, bear in mind how you would put it together. You would have to use e-clips, but you would have to also create a groove to retain those e-clips. ... Or simply use epoxy putty! biggrin

If you do get the bearing cap out, remember inside the cap are needle bearings inside the cap, so don't lose them.

If he's trying the access the hole on the joint to attach the dowel, there's no need for that. All he needs to do is grind the bump, the round bulge in the center.

The bearing cups in my joint were pressed very firmly into the yokes - so I didn't need to put the circlips back in. If you grind down the pressed bits, you *probably* won't need any retainer either, for reassembly.

True, but I would prefer to avoid grinding dust getting into the bearings (not for longevity, more for the feel). It would probably be unnoticable, but it's not *that* much work to disassemble the joint.
