So I built a brand new system yesterday. Everything turns on and runs fine, no issues, but when I went to install Win7 on a fresh brand spankin harddrive I get the following message at about the 5% mark when Win7 is expanding files:
"Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x8007045D" (those are zeros) It's a brand spankin copy of Win7, product description is "Win Home Prem 7 SP1 64bit English 1PK DSP OEI DVD"

Any ideas what this means? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Did you format the drive first? Also how is it set up in the BIOS, AHCI?

I also read it can be caused by bad media like the DVD or the drive being used to read the DVD. You said it's a store bought DVD and not one you burned yourself?

Is this an Upgrade or Full install version?? If it is the Full install you may have a corrupt disk. If it is a Upgrade version you need to install a previous version of Windows..

Thanks for the help so far!

It's Win7 full and newegg.com bought. It's the OEM version and on the disk itself it says "Intended for distribution with new PC." The choices for installing Win7 on the main screen are Upgrade or Custom. I chose Upgrade once but it wanted an older version, so I went Custom which says that is for systems that dont have previous versions of windows. I looked in the bios and didn't see anywhere to format the drive, I'll look again.

I should have said what the hardware is:
GIGABYTE GA-870A-UD3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

XFX P1-650X-CAG9 650W ATX12V 2.2 / ESP12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE PFC Power Supply

Keep the suggestions coming!

You should choose custom - even if there is data on hdd, you will be prompted to format the hdd
The bios can't format the hdd
Check the dvd for scratches or dust

Check the DVD if its clean, then its most likely RAM.

As in Bad Ram..

My Brother's system, I couldnt get windows7 to install, it would do everything, copy some files, reboot and then ask for the key, and lock up when the ram was set to the wrong speed. And when set tot eh right speed, it wouldnt copy certain files... rebotoed / blue screen w/ memory management or IO error.

I also had this problem on my system, when I used a copy that had been damaged some how (no scratches were visible, but parts of the disc wouldnt read.

try borrowing a copy from a friend.

if you have more than 1 ram stick, try running the DVD with only 1 stick present.

I suggest downloading and running Memtest 86 on each stick separately for at least 5 cycles each, then 7 cycles of them together in Dual Channel mode.

However I believe its either the DVD or the DVD Drive.

try downloading Western Digital's Program, and Format the Drive First.
Also Check SATA/IDE Modes in the BIOS, make sure there isnt anything that would cause the DVD Drive to corrupt

0x8007045D = Bad Media (its either corrupted from the DVD Drive, The Ram, or the HDD.

The Quickest and easiest thing to test is the RAM, So try Pulling 1 stick and running Windows 7 install.

I find mostly references to this being an I/O error, likely either the DVD Drive or DVD being bad and the installer unable to copy the files.

I've seen some DVD drives that were utter garbage. I had a Samsung that would not read certain DVDs, but the Liteon would. Opticarc would be another crummy drive IMHO, even though Sony owns part of Optiarc. Interesting how many Sony drives are actually Liteons. ASUS is generally Pioneer. Most Plextors are rebadged Liteons with Plextor branded firmware.

Enable SMART in the bios, if it isn't already, so it can test your hard drive. Even if it's new.
If there is a location that's damaged that's needed by Win7, it will not install. It relies on specific locations on the drive to install components. XP may install, but Vista/7 would not.

Are you connected to the SATA 6Gbs port(s) for your drive(s)?

Try the 3Gbs ports - the 6Gbs drivers may be missing at this point in the install.

Agreed, use the Custom install, not the Upgrade, and format the drive(s).

It sounds too much like bad media, Send the Disk back, or download a Digital ISO (Google, There are sites hosting the ISOs LEGALLY), but your still gona need your License Key.( Keywords "Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit ISO" )

If you can Download an ISO and mount it to a USB Drive and boot from that, it will be quicker in so many ways than downloading and burning a DVD.

make USB Key for Win7.
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/howtos/how_install_windows_7_usb_key

I've kept mine on a USB key because tis re-writable, which means its slip streamable, no re-burning.

UPDATE:

Just for giggles last night I took an old 20gig IDE hard drive and hooked it up to the new system and lo and behold Win7 installed onto it without a hitch. Conclusion: Brand new Western Digital 650gig drive is a lemon. So now begins the fun task of either getting my $ back or exchanging it for a new drive, oh joy.

Thank you again for all the help and advice, this community rocks!

just check jumpers on the drive to make sure it wasnt in the "limit mode" or anything, also make sure bios reads the drive and reports it correctly in the bios. if all that is gravy, then yeah, send it back and get it replaced.

Since you have the 20G working, hook the new drive up as your slave drive to see if windows sees it and check the Health, Size, etc.

I had problems installing a 2TB last week until I used Manage / Disk Management to fix the partition.

If it is and you can copy files between the two drive look for Maxstor MaxBlast or Clonezilla to copy the image to the new drive then set it up as your primary.

OR, you can do as I lazily did. I just left my 2TB drive as my D: drive and just use it as storage.

Yeah, hook it as a secondary drive, download Western Digital Data LifeGaurd Tools for Windows, Run the Diagnostics... If Everything Checks out, download the Image program from WD's site "Acronis True Image WD Edition Software" and clone the 20GB drive to the 640GB drive, and then unplug the 20GB drive, move the 640 to teh 20GB's Port and boot from the 640GB.

Nothing wrong with using as a non-OS drive, but since it's new I'd get it replaced too. It's not unheard of to be bad from the get-go, but why put up with even a little risk if you don't have to?
That drive issue drove me NUTS for longer than I care to admit until I learned more about how Vista/7 install.

UPDATE 2:

Guys thank you very much for the continued help and advice. I decided I don't really want to mess around with the 640gig drive and I bought a 1TB on sale ($79.99 I couldn't resist), another Western Digital Black Caviar, I installed it and Win7 installed without any problems at all. So I'm gonna use that! smile I'm returning the 640gig.

Now that the system is up and running, HOLY CRAP it is fast! I'm gonna have me lots of gamin' fun!

Thanks again for everything!

Hey Redhornet, what is your 'Windows Experience Index' on that WD drive, and is it a 7200 RPM or a 10,000 RPM?

I have two 500 GB, 7200 RPM drives in Raid 0 and I'm getting a 5.9 on my Primary HD, and that is my constraint - all the other components in my system rate at 7.9. I tried a Raid 1 config also and got the same 5.9 HD rating.

Thanks, WC

physical spinning drives wont get above a 5.9 regardless of raid-0 or interface speed.

i have 2x 500GB 32MB Cache SATAII drives in Raid 0 and it still gives me a 5.9, the same 5.9 I get with my 250GB 16MB Cache Drive.

Wrecking Crew, I don't know what the 'Windows Experience Index' is, it's a single 1TB drive and it's at 7200rpm. To me it's blazing fast coming from an 8 year old system with LOTS of space.

I will say this, when it's time to buy a new drive (in a couple years) I will go solid state.

Hi SkateZilla and Redhornet,
You can get to the Index through the Action Center flag that is in the System Tray - then go to 'View performance information'.

It does say that what is rated is the disc data transfer rate. I dug around a bit and found this from a guy at MSDN.

I work at an HDD company (I'm a data applications engineer) and asked around about disc data transfer rate - it does depend upon RPM, cache and the drive's electronics for *sustained* data transfer rates vs burst rates. A 5400 RPM drive with a small 4M cache won't *sustain* a transfer rate as fast as a 15,000 RPM drive with 32M cache. 3Gbs vs 6Gbs interface speed prolly won't make much difference because current HDD drive technology cannot keep above ~3Gbs sustained data rate.

I was curious if Redhornet's drive was 10K RPM and if that would show a higher index than my 7200's that show a 5.9 Index. Skatezilla - there was discussion that HDDs will not go above 5.9 but then some folks had reported slightly better values (?) - and it sounds like the WEI is being improved. But it has its share of critism.

WC

Redhornet - Glad to hear your problem was fixed fairly quickly.

I've got a 600GB Velociraptor 10k drive as my OS drive, only getting a 5.9 in WEI... And a 1TB Caviar Black dual CPU drive for games/storage.
