So with the deluge of sequels and crappy movies put out by Hollywood it just surprises me that some really outstanding games with great stories and characters haven't been made into a film yet.

Mass Effect - This should be a no-brainer. With the right people involved this could be an amazing sci-fi film with substance that could also appeal to the multiplex crowds.

Half Life - Read above.

Knights of the Old Republic - George should be working on getting this on film instead of wasting time with the tv live action series that is going nowhere.

There is a Mass effect movie announced already.

Along with a HALO movie.
I think MS is currently trying to build a movie studio (Microsoft Movie Studios)

I've said for years how I'd love to see KOTOR as a high quality movie. Great storyline.
The first Halo could be a good movie if they kept it gritty like the movie shorts they've put out.
An X universe movie would be cool as well.

Most of all I want Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and Rainbow Six, but of course that's not sci fi.

Oh, I found this in the forums on IMDB,

"Mass Effect is such an amazing story arc, it would make a fantastic movie franchise. Its extremely unfortunate that it is getting pigeon holed into an animated movie which will immediately shrink its potential audience to a mere fraction of what it could have otherwise been. Just really too bad. Especially since Hollywood isnt coming up with anything new on their own."

That would really suck if it is indeed an animated film and not live action.

I don't know, it says due out next year and if it's animated that won't happen. Not unless they've been working on it since shortly after the first came out.

How about a Crimson Skies movie. That'd be pretty darn excellent if you got the right actors and make it have the feel of Rocketeer or something like that.

What was the name of that scifi movie with Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow that came out a few years ago? That had a Crimson Skies look and feel to it.

there seems to be a lot more storytelling creativity in the computer/video game industry than in the film-making industry, that's for sure.

Sky Captain was miserable the first time I saw it. I think I slept through most of it.
After that...I actually really like it now. One of the most visually stunning movies, nice style. The story is fun, it's just the performances that are lacking.

Space Quest was great, but it relies a lot on knowing other SF for the jokes, which can make it a bit of a put off for those seeking to "broaden the appeal."

Animated doesnt mean just hand drawn anymore, Animated can mean 100% CGI, ie Final Fantasy : The Spirits Within

Do not know why Mass Effect needs to be made into a movie. Thought most of its enjoyment comes from being a interactive movie rather than a three hour CGI infested movie where the main character gets 5 minutes of screen time.

The story and characters in Mass Effect are complex and deep enough where it could make a really good film.

Like I said, if the right people are involved in the project a film based on Mass Effect could be very good. If the wrong people are involved it could suck big time.

The Doom movie didn't do very well. So I can see why hollyweird isn't into making more game based movies just yet. Some day tho.

And I have the Doom movie on dvd and think its a good movie.

The Doom film had almost nothing to do with the game. They didn't adapt the game to film, they took it as a vague starting point and kept changing it until it was what they wanted and not the game. So who knows how it would do?
I never thought it was that great a story anyway, although Doom 3 was admittedly better there than 1 and 2. I do look forward to Doom 4.

I agree its a bad movie, but for me there are worst movies. I dont find it so unwatchable as a lot of people say. The Phantom Menace its worst IMO.

The Starcraft universe would be very good IMO also for a movie franchise, but i think it would be harder to make it work than the case of Mass Effect, since Starcraft its a RTS game. Starcraft characters are also very very good.

Homeworld and Homeworld:Cataclysm. Good stories, but it's already partially borrowed from BSG and P.F. Hamilton's "Nights Dawn" trilogy.

[EDIT]Well, if Hollyweird doesn't shy away from reusing similar stories, these shouldn't be an impassable hurdle.

Rainbow Six would be a kick butt movie to go watch. Hell they could even follow the book exactly and still get it all into the movie in just under 2 hours since most of the combat up until the final one in the jungle which takes a lot longer. Also I would love to see the KOTOR put into a movie format but that just isn't going to happen because George didn't think up that part and only gave his blessing to a game; not the movie.

Bingo.

Of course it's George's franchise to do as he pleases BUT it's too bad that instead of trying to get his tv live action show off the ground he isn't trying to get KOTOR to be made into a theatrical release. The live action tv show is currently on the back burner because they haven't figured out a way to make the show with all of the special effects they want on a tv budget.

That was comedy gold. I couldn't stop laughing when I saw that.

Did he write that Clone Wars animated series?
With the KOTOR MMO coming, and seeing success with Clone Wars, he may end up open to it. I'm sure he'd re-write it with his own touches, which it needs anyway to turn into a movie.

As far as I know he did not but of course he still has to approve the stuff that gets written by other people for Clone Wars.

He actually does a surprising amount of work on the series.

Not only does he involve himself in multiple points during script development (when story is proposed, during writing, final script approval), he's also involved with the editing of the show as well.

The guys who run the show mention they can always just pick up the phone and ask George some question about something or other that was never expounded upon in the films (although perhaps mentioned in books) and they'll get an answer, sometimes a surprising one.

One example is a season 2 episode where they go to Mandalore and you find out about the Mandalorians and George's official take...which is basically everything you've ever read in the EU books and comics and the games is WRONG. I won't go into it because it would take too long, but it's nothing like what Traviss or other EU writers who really delved into their history and culture made it out to be.
