Were the 8 inch mounts not still aboard at the time of the Coral Sea Battle? I know I've seen pictures where she still had them in late 1941.

Just AA. The 8" wouldn't have done any good anyway. Too big, too slow............. plus blast over the flightdeck. Utter nightmare.

Defenceless? My sources (Conway's) shows that she should have had 12 5" single mounts plus some 1.1s and 20mm. With that she may have out gunned the Yorktown clase before they got their 40mm.
thanks,
Kevin She was meant to receive the 5" guns, as her sister did, but time crept up........ and she never shipped the 5". If you look at the photos as she sinks.............. she pretty much has nothing. Aside from the desperate AA.

thanks,
Kevin He meant against surface threats. I thought she had the 1.1 inch emplacements where the old 8 inchers were. Hinch is right, she just had her 8 inchers removed but hadn't received her five inch battery yet. It was due to be installed after Coral Sea but obviously was never put on. It probably wouldn't have meant any difference anyway.

Yep, I know she never got the twin 5"38s but she still had the 12 single 5"25s that were part of ther original armament. You can see a pic of one of them here with this caption.I don't know how effective the 5"25s were vrs the 5"38s. Still I'll admit that even with that she had nothing like the AA firepower the Yorktowns had after Midway. (minus the Yorktown of course who went down with her 1.1's) Kevin http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/events/wwii-pac/coralsea/cs-5h.htmBattle of the Coral Sea, May 1942 Damage in the port forward 5-inch gun gallery of USS Lexington (CV-2), from a Japanese bomb that hit near the gallery's after end during the Battle of the Coral Sea, 8 May 1942. The ship's # four 5"/25 gun is in the left center of the view, which looks forward. Staining on the photographic image is possibly due to water damage received when the photographer abandoned

Time to get serious since the anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea is in a few days. One nice Doolittle picture over Edward's Japan terrain. Bombing 2 en route to the Shoho Scouting 2 goes in first... ...accompanied by Zeroes from the Shoho (wrong paint). Bombing 2's turn. Scratch one flat top. Trapping on the Lex at bingo fuel. Note: I forgot the hook. Lex's last day above the waves. Banzai!

As a member of the Patriot Guard Riders I receive notice of those in my general area who pass and whose families have requested our presence to honor their fallen veteran. Today I learned of the passing of a USS Lexington / Coral Sea hero: John T Santacroce
