Any others looking forward to this one? I think there are. I'm looking forward to it. I pre-bought it at Gamestop. I think I'm supposed to get an extra investigation for reserving it. Does anyone know if this game uses some of the same engine as Red Dead Redemption like Euphoria? Looks pretty cool none the less and the facial rendering looks to be well done. Probably going to be pretty creepy how life-like its going to be. I also look forward to playing it different ways and playing the investigation approaches from different angles to see what other outcomes can come of them.

I can't decide... been going back and forth on it... Sounds like a great idea and game, but I just don't see how the gameplay is anything but scripted... meaning gathering evidence, interviewing people, determining if they are lieing or not...etc etc... it just seems impossible to do... but hell, I waited on Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption, and thought that was one of the greatest ever... hence my back and forth... and then the 3 disk required for Xbox... I'm thinking PS3 here do to the blu-ray, but then also thinking about selling my PS3 and 3 exclusive games... only like 1 of them....decidions decisions...

I'm thinking with L.A. Noir... I might wait for a X-mas sale with all the add-ons to come out by then...

just can't decide dammit! lol

I know Magnum its tough sometimes and you want to save your hard earned cash for what you're pretty sure you'll like. I just enjoyed Red Dead Redemption so much that I'm looking forward to games that potentially uses some of the same ideas and game engine. Plus I think the investigative angle will be fun especially in the time period and world its set in. I suppose its really a role playing game in that you are specifically a 40s era detective working his way up from a traffic detective.

I can see downloadable content for something like this adding more gameplay which if its good, I'd be glad to add to my core game. I really, really, reaaaally wish they'd add more serious addons for Red Dead Redemption.

And three discs for the Xbox? Wow. Must be because its more or less an interactive movie or mini series I suppose.

I pre bought it at EB also. Traded in GT5 with 50% trade up, cost me $17. I also really liked RDR, but I also understand where Magnum is coming from with the story line. The time era seems cool to me, plus Rockstar knows how to make great games. I gambled on it, but with nothing really coming in the next few moths that appeals to me, I think it was a good one. Now if only the PSN would get back up so I can try SOCOM 4 banghead Latest reports indicate May 31 (for everything to be up).

Yeah I'm really looking forward to this one and I pre-ordered it on Amazon since they had a $15 promotional credit on pre-orders with free release day delivery for prime.

I'm a late comer to RDR (and consoles) and so am smack in the middle of being in love with RDR, Rockstar did such a great job with the atmosphere of that game, LA Noire looks just as great and with another classic movie timeframe and atmosphere, I can't wait to play it.

I went with the PS3 version for the single Blueray and also because I heard it was supposedly the original platform that they started development on, but who knows which one will be better, RBR was apparently sharper on XB360, but I'm having a great time with it on PS3.

Definite day one purchase for me as well. Rockstar has put out some of the greatest games and this one doesn't look like it will be any different. Love the fact that it's just a different type of game. Getting tired of a lot of the same shooters. It's nice to have something fresh to play.

I heard the main reason there were three discs for the 360 was because of the space required for the new facial modeling technology. However, Rockstar assured that the breaks required to change discs occurred at appropriate times within the gameplay (such as at the end of a case being closed).

I'll be getting it fo the 360 myself, just because I want the cheevos (whore) screwy and I figure the fact that I'll have to get up to change the discs will give me the excercise I've been needing biggrin

Really can't wait for this one!

I am on the fence about this. There has been a heck of a lot of hype about it and not many games stand up to it. As Magnum mentioned it just seems to be scripted events, along the lines of Heavy Rain.

Come on Mace. Jump off that fence and into the L.A. Noir backyard. 40s L.A., gunplay, driving, detective investigations, brand new facial rendering and such. Maybe be less free roam but who knows. Hopefully it'll be enjoyable.

I have L.A. Noir on the radar and think it looks mighty interesting. But I’ll wait till I pick this one up nonetheless. First, I’m still playing and enjoying Red Dead Redemption and second there are already other good games coming out in May, which I’m simply more interested in at the moment (Lego Pirates of the Caribbean, The Witcher II). And with that I have already more than enough new games to play for the near future.

Looking forward for the first critics and user comments though.

Do you think that the special bonus investigations that only different retailers offer for their preorders will eventually be accessable by all? I also wonder if there will be a limited free roam when you are finished like RDR. Maybe it'll just be time to replay it again using different choices and tactics to try to achieve a different outcome.

My first idea for a DLC investigation mini campaign:

At another time in his early career, your character happens to be driving through a little New Mexico town called Roswell. You have nothing to do with the events other than you were there and witnessed it and happen to be a detective. You secretly investigate, sometimes running for your life in the desert only to have to be chased out of town down the dust highway taking with you a story you keep to your self.

Sorry, other threads got my creative juices going.....

I think so. I just noticed that the pre-order bonuses for RDR are all available on XBL for like 80 points.

I can't help to think that this will be overly scripted and a bunch of puzzles, two thinks I'm not fond of in my games.... but I hope I'm wrong and hope the story and gameplay is as good as RDR.

I have a feallying it will be more scripted because its a different sort of game than RDR but at the same time, they seem to have a way of making the games a lot of fun and fluid, not akward feeling.

Yeah I am hoping LA Noir case plots and sidequests are like RDR where you have the main plot plus a bunch of "Stranger" plots but you can just wander around and run into lots of random encounters... from that second video it would seem to fit their description.

One of my favorite RDR things is just slow travel from place to place and running into the random stuff, so I am hoping I can do the same wandering around LA as an on-duty or off-duty cop busting up random crime.

We shall soon see.

Maybe each main story case has multiple perps and it just randomly picks and you have to find which one it really is. (doubtful but possible)

I can't bet against Rockstar. They always seem to create a very satisfying open world game and I don't see why LA Noir will be any different. Somehow they always manage to make even the main plot missions seem like they're non linear and in old time LA, this could really be awesome.

Really can't wait for Tuesday!

In the interviews, do you think this will happen?

"Tell me about your mother"

"My mother? I'll tell you about my mother!" BLAMMMM!

Extra points for guessing what movie it's from. Nothing to do with LA Noire I know but just popped into my head smile

There was a Blade Runner game already...at least a decade ago.
Don't know how good it was, but would be tempted by one of LA Noir quality.
They could call it "Do Androids dream of electric sheep" for extra appeal...
Cheers,
Keith

interesting review... doesn't spoil it for you but explains the good and bad of the game... slow and tedious, like real police work compared to all action:

Nice another early review here:
http://www.giantbomb.com/la-noire/61-21500/reviews/

Seems less GTA like and more missions based, not a bad thing from the sound of it, but I won't decide that until I play it for myself.

Another...the continuing theme of "it's not like GTA" in that you can't have a free for all an expect to advance. Which I didnt expect anyaway. Looks like a decent change of pace.

What that IGN review does say though is that it all becomes very samey after the 10th case or so and you know what to expect everytime.

To some degree that is the case with most Rockstar titles, even RDR, but I seem to enjoy them nonetheless... I'm looking forward to a new twist in this type of game, we'll know tomorrow.

I'm really torn between this title and Witcher 2. Decisions, decisions............

Metacritic has the xbox version at 92/100 after 23 reviews, not bad.

It might be difficult to find a copy, my three main sources for gaming goodness are closed due to the flood evacuation

Interesting sig Snapdad

Looking forward to heading out and picking up my copy I pre-purchased. I don't mind having a game that's might be more laid back. Heck I enjoy playing Hidden Object games.

So far I like it. I suck at reading people, it is much more difficult to do than I thought it would be. Just don't compare the open world to that of RDR or GTA. Just not quite the same. I hope that eventually there will be some DLC for it that will keep the game around for a while.

Yeah early days here too (just made detective) but I am liking it too, definitely an adjustment from the other Rockstar games (I can't just shoot anyone anytime), but the game has a great 1940's movie atmosphere and music which I am really enjoying (reminds me of some of the great Cinemaware games from late 1980's)... I also suck at reading people so far, but hopefully that will improve as I get more experience... the facial animations and modeling are really cool and finally one of these games where I can't just drive like an idiot and get away with it.

Will be interesting to see how I do with the "reading people"... I took a course in criminal investigations which covered questions/answers, body language, facial expressions and human behavior... along with 25 plus years of "real world" experienbce... should receive my copy via gamefly tomorrow.

I bet you'll be a natural Magnum. Right up your alley. I find it hard to drive and not go on a complete bender running over people and stuff like that. I still don't obey traffic laws though. I drive like I would in GTA.

I played a bit too but haven't made detective yet. I like it. Sort of an interactive detective story cinema game. I read someone wrong to as she now doesn't want to talk to me. I think it was because I didn't do what apparently they wanted me too.(Still tutorial stuff I suppose) I didn't want to out right accuse her of dishonesty like I was told but chose the "doubt" angle. My character then lays it on thicker than I would have thought and that ended that conversation lol. Really crisp and nice looking. The facial animation stuff is still functioning even while walking around in between interactive scenes which is cool.

I picked it up last night, just happened to be at EB picking up portal 2.

I love it so far. I don't agree with the ign review in that it's boring. I actually think it's more dynamic in some ways. In the middle of an investigation you might ask the right question, or have a piece of evidence that gets a reaction out of someone. Sometimes they'll bolt or open fire. I almost spilled my drink when a suspect just bolted mid sentence, and I had an 'IT'S ON NOW MOTHER TRUCKER' moment.

I very much enjoy the fact that I can't mess anything up and start from scratch, I don't have that kind of gaming time to waste.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this one Mag, I'm sure you'll have the nitpicks because of your real world experience, but as a game it's great.

The open world is better than i thought, and because you're more focused on the case at hand, it feels much more fleshed out.

And no more cop killing!

I finally got some game time in. Managed to make detective before I decided to stop for the night. I am having fun, but it feels really linear right now. I got a street crime thing to stop, which seems to have been my only random event so far. Some guy with a pistol and a mask shooting at an old lady, me and my partner. So I just waited till he ran down a pretty straight area and I could line him up and put 2 bullets in his back. Does anyone know if you get more points for capturing those guys or something?

Not sure, I capped him also. Don't think it gets away from being linear though. Found this strategy for the street crimes on Gametrailers.

Quote:
The best time to do side missions and search out street crime is after you have completed the Traffic Desk chapter. You can then go to the main menu and replay cases. Go to the Traffic Desk folder and select "Streets of LA (free roam)." This mode will let you explore the city and will alert you when there are nearby crimes.

Bought it this morning and have been playing for 6 and a half hours smile On my second homicide case and it's absolutely excellent! 29% through and not become boring or repetitive for me, can't wait to get back on again.

BTW, does this use the GTAIV engine?

I just finished the first homicide mission and having fun. Still trying to understand how to play it. Little confused on question asking. I believe it does use the same engine in RDR. The trees and shrubery have the same look and physics when you walk through them.

I agree determining people's intentions can get difficult and it seems to be getting tougher as you move through the game. I'm on my 3rd or 4th homicide case and I still haven't found an easy way to determine between doubt and flat out lie. Right now I just usually review my clues and if there seems to be nothing I can use to accuse them of a lie, I go with doubt but lately, even the truth has been difficult to read correctly.

Personally I love the fact that it's not an easy read because I think that would make everything too easy. This way it's a bit more realistic IMO. I also really enjoy the banter between Cole and his partner while they ride to their next location. Some of the talk is really hilarious.

I've also noticed some excellent attention to detail as new cases will make references to prior cases already closed earlier in the game. I really think this helps keep everything tied together in the course of the game's timeline rather than just random cases with no connection to the game's world. The street crimes in free roam tend to be more irrelevant to the overall game.

So far I'm really enjoying the change of pace this game brings. I really curious to see what Magnum thinks considering his background.

I'm really starting to get into it and enjoying more. Its fun just relaxing to the slower pace of investigating interupted from time to time by scenes of action or violence. Does anyone else have some pretty bad fps at times? Every once in awhile the fps gets pretty bad on me. Its not enough however to turn me off with this game. The fps issues remind me of the swamp and tree areas around "Thieves Landing" in RDR which seems to have the worst fps in the game.

I look forward to playing through a crime again to try to get what I missed the first time.

So yesterday I thought I had finished the last traffic case. Got through arresting the guy and told I had a promotion but quit before the last cut scene before the case really ends. Ended up having to go back from investigating the prop makers place. That sucked.

Any others see fps wierdness?

P.S. Its fun having a game now that actually lets you play the role of a Columbo or Dragnet character. That's what some of the narration has reminded me of the old Dragnet series. That would be cool if they had a "Columbo" action function that you could use on your suspects by asking them just one more question whereby you can annoy the snot out of them and perhaps reveal something. biggrin

I'm lovin' this game so far. I've turned off all the music clues so nailing a bad guy really is worth all the fuss now.

MP would be nice tho. Say you and a partner team up to solve crimes. That'd be something.

There are FPS issues Coot but, as you say, no biggy.

I turned off the vibration and clue help too right from the start to make it more of a challenge. I'm 18/21 cases and wondering whether to carry on or restart now I know how to play it better, ie. reading people and knowing when to accuse and when not to. It's great when you hear them lie and think 'I have that evidence!' and pin it on them smile . I've been trying to get all the cars and then I'm after the film reels, I only have one so far, then the badge challenge...

Looking forward to more cases in DLC.

Thanks Mace for confirming. I find myself being more methodical now too. If there is a witness to be questioned, I'll usually think "no I need to investigate more and get more clues so that I have more "ammo" when I approach a witness".

I noticed 3 or 4 new missions for download this AM on XBL... personally I didn't care for the game, lucky for me I just gamefly'ed it. (I think my profession gets in the way of gameplay... drives me nuts seeing a street cop picking up evidence, investigating crimes on his own etc etc... but hey, looks like a great game, just not for me.)

Cool, thanks Mag I'll have a look tonight.

On the street cop thing, I am guessing they weren't as hot on evidence back then? This game has started me reading about the Dahlia murder and how no one was ever arrested for it or they ever had any firm suspicions of anyone. I have heard it could have been a mob killing as she was hanging around people who had connections and was shooting her mouth off saying she would talk. Isn't the 'Glasgow smile' something the mafia does to people who were going to talk?

Odd how it was never closed with a conviction. See what this game has done to me lol.

Okay Mace, what movies are you also watching. biggrin

I'm the same way btw. Whats that 50s detective themed movie with Jack Nicolson? Seems like that might be a good one.

That would "Chinatown'. I think it was one of Nicholson's best. Great performances by both him and Faye Dunaway.

Once I am on the second disc will I have to go back to the first again? I have a friend who I was going to lend the game eventually, but now that I got to the second disc can I just let him borrow the first as I play through the game on the second and third disc?

No, it ends on the third disc and never goes back. Unless you want to replay the cases from previous desks then you will need the other discs.
