Hi there,
after not having played this game in many years I decided to give it a go again. Now, as I have much better hardware this time around and there have been a whole host of updates to the game I imagine that its possible to tweak the graphics to make the game look better than whats possible through the in-game configuration screen. I'm looking in my conf.ini and I see a lot of options like hardware_shaders, specular lights, visibility distance etc. I'm looking for a guide explaining what each of the important variables does and what the maximum values are, and possibly suggestions for various hardware as well. Does such a guide exist?

EDIT: I forgot to say that I'm on version 4.101
-Wim

try these first, in the [Render_OpenGL] section of your con.ini:

HardwareShaders=1 (important for perfect quality, if 0 other parameters wont work)
Forest=3 (best, animated trees)
LandGeom=3 (increased visibility distance, reduces shimmering of rivers and coastlines)
Water=4 (best water for nvidia card, water=3 looks nice too)
Effects=2 (if smoke effects produce low fps set to 1)
ForceShaders1x=0 (shouldnt be 1, forces old style shaders)

Check out the IL-2 Guide for Computers, Benchmarking, Optimizing, Tweaking at AllAircraftSimulations for some hints, although it does get a bit repetitive at times.
There is a good guide to the conf.ini and what the various settings mean over at the Mission4Today Mission4Today Knowledge Base .
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Or, easier- copy/replace my conf.ini contents into yours (back it up first), then its just a matter of changing resolution from my 1440:900 to whatever you have. All perfect settings, Nvidia card.

hey while reviewing yours, and after doing some reserach of my own i found this which you may not be aware of...
Clouds rendering

In order to see higher quality clouds you will need to manually edit the conf.ini file located in your main game folder before launching the game. Open the file with a text editor, find the [game] section and in the TypeClouds= line write in either 0 or 1, then save the file.

TypeClouds=0
standard clouds

TypeClouds=1
improved quality clouds

A very interesting phenomenon happened when I cut and pasted the suggested config.ini.

The fonts in the game and in the FMB turned to little squares and my cursor disappeared. I was helpless in the FMB and had to CNT/ALT/DEL out. For some reason I decided to fly the mission even though I could not read a thing that was going on. After about 5 minutes into the mission all the fonts changed to the correct one. From then on I could use it fine and fine it was.

The graphics are much better.

So I tried it on my other 2 versions of IL2, one modded and one still at 4.09. The same thing happened to both. Little squares for font then after 5 or less minutes everything was fine.

This program is so stange yet so powerful.

I am still amazed that the tanks, artillery, naval guns and even infantry shoot at each other and even kill one another in realistic numbers. You can get quite a battle going in the FMB and make some interesting videos.

Thanks! You live, you learn:) Never noticed that feature. I'll test and see what difference it makes to clouds.

Yeah, like I said in the other thread- not sure what could cause this... Maybe it is "il2 perfect mode on ATI graphics card" bug, but if you use Nvidia- then I'm completely stumped. My version 4.09 btw.
