I've been helping a mate who is new to PC gaming out with getting Rfactor up and running and he's had a blast with it, but he's come acreoss a problem which I can't diagnose, and as we don't live close enough for me to have a look at his PC and find out what is going on exactly I've had to rely on emailing him or talking over the phone, and it's just not making much sense as to why it is happening...
PC stats: CPU: AMD Phenom II 4GB of ram @ 3.20GHz Running Windows XP 2002 Graphics Card: ATi Radeon HD 4350 Series
The problem he's been having is that after the AI in front of him crosses the start finish line they disappear on him and pop back up later down the road... It's not game breaking but could be damned annoying.. I've tried to come up with a solution for him, via a Direct-X update and using different settings...
He's running everything except shadows at medium and shadows set to low... Here's his words after I asked what track is it worse at...
"Doesnt matter what track or what mod I run I still have similar problems.. Its not a huge issue if I quali up front but if I start further back it happens all the time.. Most of the mods run smoothly except for the cars disappearing intermittantly but not the 2010 mod.. The disappearing is worse and it runs very jumpy.. But that mod has issues more than likely.. Its called F1 2010 by WCP.. It has a MP and an SP which seem identical.. Dunno what the diff is.. This is that same mod which has the ghost cars!"
any help would be appreciated...

Two things spring to mind. Max visible cars? If he runs against only one or two AI does it improve?? Also the auto FPS setting. This will change settings on the fly and can do all kinds of strange stuff.
Try emailing him a copy of your .plr just to confirm it's not settings related. If it still does it then i'd agree with purolator that it could be a lack of GFX horsepower. I've also had differing success rates with ATI driver versions. Might be worth trying an older or newer set.

DOH! Darren is right! Max visible cars and auto fps could be the key. I never used the auto fps settings myself though. Regarding ATI, I started rFactor with an HD3850(AGP), then went to an HD4870 and now use an HD6950. They always have been Powercolor PCS cards. I had some trouble for some time a bit more than 2 years ago, but this was due to faulty RAM.

Thanks guys, He currently has the visable cars set to 15 but has tried all levels of graphics and visable cars, and it still happens when he has 3 visable cars, but only to those infront of him... He's running 4GB of ram @ 3.20GHz How do we check the Auto FPS setting? I'll try sending him a copy of my .plr and see if there's anything in there... He downloaded rFactor directly from the rFactor site back in december, so I'm guessing he's got the latest version of the patch, I could be wrong though.. I'll try and find a driver update for his card, but if that all fails I'll get him to download lite and see if a fresh install works for him... I'll report back if it's fixed or not... Thanks guys...

I think the AutoFPS option is in the display settings. You can specify a minimum frame rate and the game will auto adjust. Try setting it lower or disable completely.
If he runs with only 1 or 2 AI does the situation improve?

Thanks guys,
He currently has the visable cars set to 15 but has tried all levels of graphics and visable cars, and it still happens when he has 3 visable cars, but only to those infront of him... I've seen similar issues. I think it's because the Max Cars setting, too. When you get near the Pits the cars in the Pits take up the slots in the Max Cars count so the cars on the track go out of visibility. Then when you get away from the Pits the track cars come back into visibility. WC

Alright I've got a quick update... There was a difference in the .plr in graphics section with regard to AI detail.. his was '0' and mine was '3'.. I'm not sure what that means though, it could just mean that mine is set on full and his isn't...
He's now going to try installing Lite and see how he goes on a new install, and he's also trying running it on DX7 rather then DX9, but he says he had the problem before I told him to change to DX9 so I'm not sure that's the case...
Also I don't think it's got to do with Max cars as he's said he has run it at 2 and still had the problem... But I'll get him to double check that anyway...
Thanks again guys, I'll keep you posted when he gets back to me...

Unless I misunderstood the Max Cars solution, I believe the suggestion was to set the max visible cars to be the number of cars in the mod - so you'd be setting it to a number like 40 rather than a low number like 2 - unless the mod only had 2 cars. Sounds a bit strange to me but it's worth trying that as well. I might have that wrong ... in which case I'll shut up
Upgraded ...

Yup that's what i meant Jon. Max visible cars is needs to be equal (or greater) than the number of AI to eliminate this as a cause of pop in/out. My idea was to run only 2 or 3 Ai (to keep overheads down) but make them all visible.
