THe new HBO series, "A Game of Thrones" starts tonight.
Based on the bestselling "A Song of Ice and Fire" series by George R R Martin, the first 10-episode season will cover the story in the first book, "A Game of Throne".
I am reallllly looking forward to this. Hopefully HBO will quickly be picking it up for a second season.

While the books are classed as fantasy, the series reads more like the War of the Roses. Magic and Dragons only have a minor role. I really enjoyed the series, though I thought the fourth book had too much filler in it. My favourite character in the books is Tyrion Lannister.

Yeah, I was surprised to see that - I guess it's just an HBO standard approach for their shows. I wasn't really looking for it, and wasn't into the books at all (I hadn't even heard of them until I saw the ads for the HBO series), but ran across it while flipping channels last night. It was already on when I came to it and I didn't look to see when it started so I didn't know how much I missed. Luckily, HBO was running it pretty much non-stop last night, so I was able to catch the beginning (as it turned out, I didn't miss much the first time).
More nudity and swearing than I was expecting. I'm not a prude by any means, and I thought the nudity more or less fit in, but the swearing just sounded too modern-day-reality to me, and kind of killed the suspension of disbelief for me.
I am looking forward to seeing Sean Bean play a good guy. I think the only time I've seen him play a good guy was in "Sharpe's Rifles" (Boromir had a good heart, but was made out as a threat and caused problems, at least in the movie).

I'd have to say it's a toss-up between Tyrion, Robb Stark, and Jon Snow for me.

I thought it was a pretty good start. It's been a while since I read the books but pretty much the entire episode seemed very close to the novel. I wonder if generous presentation of breasts will be a regular thing or if they were just trying to draw attention in the first ep?
I'm also surprised that they haven't caught some flak for depicting underage characters nude and having sex. Granted the actresses playing them are all legal, but Daenerys for example is only supposed to be 13. Not to mention the incest.

Oh, there's no shortage of sex and swearing in the books.

Nudity, profanity and sex aren't really modern inventions
And the show itself started very slow. I hope it picks up some speed and intensity in coming episodes.

The sex part I get, I just was a little surprised because I thought they might want to include younger audiences in their target demographic.
As for the language, I'm sure humanity has been swearing forever, but I was thinking more the words they use just have kind a modern urban rhythm to them, and it doesn't seem consistent with the rest of their speech patterns, that's all.

Two days after "Game of Thrones" debuted to an overall audience of 4.2 million viewers, HBO has renewed the series for a second season. In making the announcement, programming president Michael Lombardo said, “We are delighted by the way David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have brought George R.R. Martin’s amazing book series to the screen, and thrilled by the support of the media and our viewers. This is the continuation of an exciting creative partnership.”

I thought it was decent. So far it is just the actors and characters that I enjoy since the settings were nothing special and the plot seemed banal. I hope it picks up storywise later. My points of comparison are Carnivale and Rome. Two HBO series which really drew me in on the first episode which so far GoT has not done. It was good enough that I will watch at least another couple episodes.
Was it me or did Lena Headey look odd as a blonde? Her brother gave me an "Aaron Eckhart's more handsome brother" vibe.

Well the book also starts off slowly, though I don't know how closely the book is being followed here.

Its starting to get brutal now. I love the casting for the Mountain and Hound.

I just got into this series, have watched the first 5 episodes in a row now. Great stuff! And while I agree it starts off slow, once Ned gets to King's Landing the scheming and intrigues really pick up the pace. Excellent series!

A frickin year until next season. It really finished off good, though you could tell the budget wasn't quite there in places.

It would be nice if they could put in the missing battle scenes for a special edition now that the have funding for the second season. (Yeah, dream on...)

The name of the show reminds me of what my grandmother use to say about my late grandfather. I used to go visit them on Sundays, and every once in a while my grandpa was absent. My grandma would say, "He is sitting on his throne (aka potty), smoking his pipe and doing the NY Times crosswords." The Game of Thrones.

Having seen all of season one and being half way through the first book I am impressed that they are staying so true to the book in spite of it's scope and complexity.
This is a great cast with Peter Dinklage providing some of the cleverest dialogue and some comic breaks in the midst of all the chaos. He really shows his talent in this role as the most likable villain to come down the road in quite a while.
The Northern Ireland landscape is fascinating and does a good job of portraying the edge of the civilized world. HBO scores with another outstanding series.

That's one of the beauties of Martin's series

You never know what will happen with a character. IMO, Tyrion & Jaime Lannister turn out to be two of the most sympathetic characters in the series. While more than a few of the "good guys" turn into idiots or asses

Tyrion was my favorite character but his story is so predictable. You can put 2+2 together and find out what will happen to his character in this next book.
Jamie on the other hand did a complete 180. I hated him at the beginning and by the last book I enjoyed his character more than most others.

I just hated that Tyrion and Jamie parted on bad ground. Both of them hating the other for a misunderstanding.
"crowning" of Viserys was pretty brutal, but he definitely had it coming, the twit

well, in the first episode / chapters he did manage to do the dirty with his own twin sister which is pretty much considered taboo in every culture - they even have children together. And he did throw Bran out of the window which was also a big bummer for a 10-year old kid. Tyrion is one of the more interesting characters - of course with him being physically disabled he must have a clever mind to remain interesting. But in his own way he always acts as a pretty good guy: Gives Jon Snow good advice, designs the saddle for Bran...

Of course, that was the great irony of LOTR...that is exactly what they DID do. Well, climbed into it, anyway. If only Gandalf and Elrond had invited the King of the Eagles to the Rivendell council and proposed one of the eagles carry someone to Mt Doom...

You mean that the Nazghul flew? Remember it took quite awhile after their defeat at the river at Arwen's hands before they got those out there. If they'd gone straight from the council to Mt Doom they could've beat them there.

I couldn't believe Stark got himself killed off. He shouldn't have given the Queen a heads up. I thought the blind knight was going to be put back up on the throne and that was the set up for the second season, then with the execution of Stark, I was like...That's out the window.
I like Tyrion, when I hated him at first. Still can't stand Jamie or his King brother, but like Stark's oldest son and Stark's #%&*$#.

I hope Aria wins. I like her a lot.
I am looking very much forward to season 2! I share your thoughts on Tyrion.

At first I thought he was a complete idiot, but he turns out to be quite decent. And he is hilarious! Peter Dinklage really ought to win some awards for his performance! Also, I liked Ned, but he made a fantastically huge error in telling Cersei of his knowledge about her and Jaime. I also like Jon Snow. Can't wait to see what happens at The Wall, those Others are quite scary bastards!

Yea, I just was shocked that he told her and that he did went to the one guy who told him not to trust him. I would have at that point, leaked out the king's son was a by-product of incest.
I like Snow and Tyrion, they both seem to be under-dogs, but both are decent. Funny that the whores like Tyrion and bad mouth men who think they are greater due to his "shortness" and their "height". Snow just seems a decent person who is growing into a good man.

Did anyone else hear the three horn blasts towards the end? Ominous...
This is going to be exciting!
