After successfully avoiding all things Gunship! for a coupla' months, I've had a sudden and tragic relapse. While involved in another project, it occurred to me that some of the stuff I was handling could be reused for GS.
Just because it
could've been done doesn't necessarily mean that it
should've been done, if you know what I mean. This the second-most useless GS stuff that I've ever created. The "Most Useless" title is still doggedly being held by a 1.8 metre high hand-knitted armoire cosy emblazoned with the Gunship! logo. A brave and steadfast pile of wool if there ever was one!
Ah, well, the time's already been wasted...
Here's a thingamajig that'll let you inspect battlemaps at a greater resolution than possible in the venerable old Battle Builder:
GSmapJunk Download It's actually two thingamajigs-- Or a whatchamacallit and a complementary whifflesnizzet, to be more precise.
One doodad is a command-line utility that produces a .gif image of a battlemap. You choose a world, and then enter the XY coordinates of the battlefield centre. Within 4-6 weeks it'll spit out an 1800px square .gif suitable for framing, once printed.
I wallpapered our guest bathroom with maps of Belarus. Turned out wonderfully, but in hindsight, I shoulda' laminated the pics in the shower.
The other hoojamaflip is a viewer for the map image. Mission.txt files that have the same battlefield centre as the map can be imported, and Platoon paths will be displayed.
None of this is at all useful unless you have some basic knowledge of editing a mission's text file. And even if you have Psyklik-level skills with mission.txt editing, this stuff probably still won't be very helpful. Pretty much only good for tweaking waypoint coordinates.
Not properly tested. Poorly documented. Can‘t guarantee any of this will work on your planet. Use at your own risk, etc.
