I haven't, but it looks like it's a movie that's not a re-imagining, a sequel, a prequel, a remake, or a refreshing of some other movie, so I'm actually looking forward to it.

Yeah, I can see that comparison, but, and of course this is without seeing anything other than the previews, it doesn't look like he has to make himself a better man or anything, which, if true, would give it a very different overall feel than Groundhog day.
It's currently getting a 89% rating at rottentomatoes.com, which is a good sign.

Yes, others movie have in the past used the premise of someone repeating time in an attempt to better things. The tendency to brand films with a "oh, this is just film X with a bit of Y and Z thrown in" as if that somehow negates the effort put into the story is just exasperating. I always answer "oh, so you're just your father with a bit of your mother thrown in, seen it".

I believe it was George Lucas who mentioned that there are basically 30 different plots from which movies and books base their stories on. Unless it's some really avant garde, surrealistic movie, every movie that comes out will be derivative to some extent of a premise that we've seen in other films.

One could say Shakespear's work covered a large number of story types too.

Nicholas Meyer, the director, said that the fact that the Shakespeare plays still have meaning shows that mankind hasn't changed at all over hundreds of years, which he thinks shows we're not getting any better.
I understand that there are only so many story elements and structures, and appreciate something that's not just an outright re-do of something else.

Nicholas Meyer, the director, I'm not sure if I misunderstood your post or not but according to IMDB Nick Meyer didn't direct Source Code or were you speaking in general? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0945513/

Just in general, specifying that the Nick Meyer I referred to was a director, and not someone else named Nick Meyer. I almost said "director of ST:II and VI," but he's done other stuff so I just stopped at director. Sorry for the confusion.

No problem! I just chalk it up to the vagaries of internet communication. But yes, it's amazing how many films have been made that have a story that is either based on a Shakespearean play or is significantly influenced by one.

Wasn't there a Denzel Washington/Tony Scott film a few years back, about a cop who time travels to thwart a bombing on a barge? Sounds mighty similar.

Anyone remember the old Val Kilmer film Top Secret, and the character named Deja Vu?

"Is this the Potato Farm?" "Yes, I'm Albert Potato."
"Aren't you Nick Rivers, the American rock and roll singer?" "No, I'm someone else. I'm...Mel Torme'." "Aw..." "That was close." "A little TOO close." "What do you mean?" "All we have is his word that he's who he says is." "What are you saying?" "How do we know he's NOT Mel Torme'?"

The wife and I watched Source Code last night on Blue Ray and we both thought it was excellent. The plot was well written and there was great empathy between the actors . We had seen 'Moon' some time ago so knowing there would be plot twists we purposely didn't watch any trailers for this film, and didn't even read the back of the box. For this sort of film it definitely helped to go in without preconceived ideas. My only negative criticism would be; I thought the film should have ended when the two leads kiss near the end, the last few minutes seemed tacked on to give a happy ending.
