I haven't, but it looks like it's a movie that's not a re-imagining, a sequel, a prequel, a remake, or a refreshing of some other movie, so I'm actually looking forward to it.

Same here Ken. Although somebody called it Groundhog Day with terrorists.

Yeah, I can see that comparison, but, and of course this is without seeing anything other than the previews, it doesn't look like he has to make himself a better man or anything, which, if true, would give it a very different overall feel than Groundhog day.

It's currently getting a 89% rating at rottentomatoes.com, which is a good sign.

Yes, others movie have in the past used the premise of someone repeating time in an attempt to better things. The tendency to brand films with a "oh, this is just film X with a bit of Y and Z thrown in" as if that somehow negates the effort put into the story is just exasperating.
I always answer "oh, so you're just your father with a bit of your mother thrown in, seen it".

I believe it was George Lucas who mentioned that there are basically 30 different plots from which movies and books base their stories on. Unless it's some really avant garde, surrealistic movie, every movie that comes out will be derivative to some extent of a premise that we've seen in other films.

One could say Shakespear's work covered a large number of story types too.

Nicholas Meyer, the director, said that the fact that the Shakespeare plays still have meaning shows that mankind hasn't changed at all over hundreds of years, which he thinks shows we're not getting any better.

I understand that there are only so many story elements and structures, and appreciate something that's not just an outright re-do of something else.

Just in general, specifying that the Nick Meyer I referred to was a director, and not someone else named Nick Meyer. I almost said "director of ST:II and VI," but he's done other stuff so I just stopped at director. Sorry for the confusion.
