That was the great part about SG-1 and SGA. They had humor in the show without it getting in the way. The stories were serious 99% of the time (there were exceptions, but unlike say the X Files they worked well) but you had cast members that could be counted on quipping a line or making a gesture or whatever to evoke laughs.
That was actually something RDA stipulated when he took over the role of Oneill. He said "I liked what Kurt Russell did in the film, but I can't be that serious every week for season after season without losing my mind." He also stipulated the show have an ensemble cast more like ST or B5 rather than just 2 leads like the film or X Files...he really didn't want the entire show riding on his shoulders like MacGyver did.
Then there's SGU which is if anything less humorous than BSG.

Kurt Russell was definitely intense in the Stargate film and it worked great but I agree completely with what RDA said how that wouldn't quite work for a weekly tv series season after season.

At least BSG had some comedy which was used sparingly but it was almost always effective.

My wife got me to start watching Friday Night Lights. Same problem. "Why are these people always miserable?" They seem to thrive on just not being happy, no matter what! LOL
"Intense" is good, but it's got to be tempered some.
