Anybody here upgraded to 4.0 yet? I keep getting prodded to do so, but I want to find out if it's worth it or not. If you did upgrade, are there any problems with bookmarks, etc? Do I need to save my bookmarks and then port them over?

I upgraded, and so far everything is fine. Bookmarks and history changed over w/o a hitch. All I did was run the .exe and it did it's thing.

Definitely worth it. Much less sluggish than 3.x. Tab candy is great. No issues with bookmarks. No issues with finding compatible add-ons either; maintains a high level of compatibility with 3.0 (even if your add-on isn't specifically marked to work with 4.0, you can install add-on compatibility reporter and disable compatibility checking -- this will allow you to use it even if it's not made for 4.0) I haven't encountered a single crash in the RC or full version.

Installed and it ran. No different than any other Firefox update. No issues the way I use it.

While is may seem a "touch" faster, I find no significant functional differences for me. But, newer is always funner smile

The main change is supposed to be "stability" due to a different way of processing individual web pages on tabs. Each is its own process now (if I read correctly) -- like running a separate Firefox instance for each and every tab. So, failures are localized to a tab -- while other tabs continue to function properly. I have not tested that or had any issues with tabs.

I think Chrome is the same way, At some points I have 15 Chrome.exe processes....

My brother opens about 20+ tabs on his firefox.... hmmm.

I get tab crashes with DiVx Embedded video... Firefox will ask if i want to close tab or wait, etc. its not a FireFox issue as DiVx Embedded player crashes on all my browsers (IE, Chrome, Opera, Firefox)

I have been using it since the Beta 6 and from my point of view its much faster than the 3, i had the 3 on XP for a while and i tried to use it again......it was horrible. I do get some crashes still, but otherwise it runs fine. And i would never browse again without my essential plug-ins, Noscript, Adblock Plus, Better Privacy and Optimize google, i haven´t seen an ad yet that can defeat the Adblock plus and Noscript combination. Well and i do have a lot of tabs open, 20+, and it still runs fine. A friend of mine calls me and my many tabs "ongoing catastrophe". biggrin

At the moment i still see only one process in taskmanager.

Allen, surf for one month on Firefox 4 only and the go back to Firefox 3 and open 20 tabs! biggrin

Oh and get yourself MozBackup, it can not only backup your firefox profile, but also your thunderbird profile with all e-mails. MozBackup download english MozBackup download German (Chip)

FF is still just a single process for the browser itself. What they did do is push most plugins out into a separate process, so when a plugin goes boom (probably the cause of most FF crashes) it doesn't take down the browser.

AFAIK the Chrome-like process per tab system (or something similar) is slated for FF 5 or 6.

IE does separate processes for tabs or windows, methinks. It would be a nice feature for FF, since the tab recovery manager Session Restore got a little spotty in the later 3.x builds. Minus the plugin-container Speedo mentioned, I really don't know what other improvements they've made to crash-proofing it.

Lately, I have noticed that the *drip, drip, drip* sound FF usually makes has gotten A LOT worse. I looked in task manager to discover it was using 300,000k of memory. I said, "Well, that's FF" & ignored it. I looked a little later having closed most tabs, and it had addressed 700,000k! It didn't release it all when I closed it, either.

Glad someone started this thread.

I'm running version 3.6.17 and I like it.
I don't have any Ipods or phones...etc. that I use with Firefox.
I don't use more than 3-5 tabs....ever.

From what I'm reading, I don't think I'll change to 4.0
Can't see the benefits, for me anyway.
No crashes now, ever, and seems fast enough for me.

If it's not broke....don't fix it.

Upgraded to 4, no issues with add-ons, but I don't use many these days other than Tabmix Plus. Have had a couple of temporary lock ups, but no crashes. I do the majority of my browsing on my netbook which is significantly faster on 4. Can't tell much difference on my desktop, but I don't use that for browsing much to tell.
Always good to back up your bookmarks every so often regardless. TabMix Plus options too if you use it.

Rule #1 of PC security, keep your software up to date unless you have a very compelling reason not to.
