Because the EAW files on my laptop were previous versions, I did some updating. In particular I updated SPAW to include the TBF Avenger for online. I intended to reinstall SPAW completely, but just as a precaution I named my original "SPAW" folder as "SPAWx". Vista told me I did not have permission. One or more files inside it had an ownership problem. Vista could not identify the owner, and even though I am an administrator I could not change the ownership to me.
Checking on the 'net found few solutions, but somewhere a user had noted that a restart of the PC usually fixed the problem. I tried it and it worked. I was able to rename the folder, reinstall SPAW, add the patches and the TBF.
Somehow both Vista and Win 7 can change the ownership of files, without good reason. If the new owner cannot be found, then these files cannot be renamed or deleted even by the administrator.

This error may explain why some users (such as Col. Landers) cannot replace/overwrite/trash files with OAW and the DirSet Picker.

Hello,

This is not specific to your OS listed XP pro also happens to me. Even a thumb drive once I had a file that would not delete, even as me as the admnin. and the wife was not logged on (as can interfere sometimes).

It annoys me, sometimes reboot will allow me to delete file, sometimes not. And this is NOT a frequent occurance.

S!

An update. It has continued to happen quite frequently. However, a patten seems to be emerging. I may try to delete an EAW folder, but it does not disappear. It may have contained hundreds of files but only one or two are left. They are invariably "*.dat" files. Rebooting works- I can the delete the remaining ones after rebooting. It is really stupid though. It would make far more sense if the "Administrator" had the right to delete anything whose "ownership" is not known.

I'm bumping this because I have had no end of trouble testing the campaign and squadron software with campXXYY.dat and sqXXYY.dat files.
Earlier today I had made an OAW folder with a set of campXXYY.dat and sqXXYY.dat files for 1915. They were loaded, but to test Ray's question I changed the 1940 squadron files in the root folder to 2011. Later, when I tried to reload the WW1 set with OAW I got a "permission denied" error, and had to re-boot.
As I mentioned before, problem occurs only with "dat" files.

Hi,

This can be related ???

Quote:
How to erase or clean Index.dat files?

Erasing or cleaning of the index.dat files is not an easy task because they are opened by Internet Explorer and Windows all the time. If you are using an ancient Windows Me, Windows 98 or Windows 95 system, you can restart in DOS mode and then you can delete index.dat files one by one (look in the folders that are mentioned above). However if you are using Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000 or NT this won't work.
