X-Plane 10 is looking very promising to me, much more promising considering it has a live development team unlike some other civil sims out there that are unsupported yet have their own forum smile

Seriously FSX has been around for so long, and the planes still feel like flying on the moons gravity. Something fresh is needed and I'm looking forward to X-Plane 10!

Can we have an X-Plane forum?

Not sure if I agree with the "moon gravity" comment, and I'm not sure what your referring to with a "live development" team, but I do second the notion that X-plane could use a dedicated forum section under civilian aviation.

Xplane.org has the biggest xplane forum online.

...and Simviation has a much larger FSX forum than SimHQ. The whole reason I come to SimHQ is so I don't have to worry about following/posting on a dozen message boards for all the sims I play. I suspect the creation of this site was to serve the community along those lines. Acting as a type of Head quarters for simulation software discussion...

I think a while ago there used to be an X-Plane forum, but as most of the SHQ users have been FS flyers, participation was low, and it got merged into a more general forum.
We just need more X-Plane posters. =)

Yes, x plane 10 is the main thing that will move people over from FSX

I doubt a new release would encourage people to move from FS* simply because FS has a much wider array of *good* 3rd party addons; X-Plane doesn't quite have it the same way, and FS people would have invested quite a bit of time and money into that goodness. Casual players would be an easier target.

Well, that's a matter of timing. Laminar needs to get this game shipped out within this year, before MS flight gets more ramped up. If they delay it more than that, they'll just be playing catch-up. Right now, the only competition is FSX, which runs like a dog on all but the most expensive systems. Assuming they can get X-plane optimized for modern hardware, they should be able to compete.

We've actually had an X-Plane forum 3 times before. Problem was, all three went dormant after a couple of weeks, so they were shutdown. We're tryin' biggrin

Plan to try again once X-Plane 10 is released. BeachAV8R will be the main contact for it and he has agreed to focus some of his time here on it and the forum.

Guod, Just curios, is it an issue of a section goes dormant for a time? Is it sill taking up server resource, for example? or is it just a matter of not over-spreading the user/moderator base?

Strictly a question of inactivity. Once a forum goes dormant, the death clock starts ticking here and my finger hovers over the big red kill button. With the exceptions of a couple forums that are the only support left for a specific sim (e.g. B-17) all our forums have activity, or they get killed off. I'd love for us to have sustained activity in an X=Plane forum, and fans will get the chance again soon as version 10 ships.

Excellent thanks. Yeah I think once X-Plane 10 is out, even if it's dormant for a short time it's good to keep it because it can be a repository for lots of useful information.

SimHQ has become a one stop shop for many of us who can keep track of sims and grab useful info from one place, these days we are too busy to be joining all different forums for every sim we're interested in.

well, if I may submit an idea:

Create the forum when we get a live ship date for X-plane. That way people can begin discussing hardware setups, various title features, planned add-ons, etc.

I think that just like Cliffs of Dover, things will start hopping shortly before release. If you look, each time we get a major update from Laminar, there is a wave of discussion in the civ forum. As we get closer to launch, those updates will be more frequent, help drive the community.

Just a thought.

Agreed. Once there is a shipping date, we'll give it another shot.

"X-Plane 10 is much, much, much slower in coming along than I planned.. but it is much, much better as well. It is slow because I have raised the bar ridiculously high for this release, simply because I CAN. SO, I am keeping v9 totally bug-free while v10 is developed, which I am hoping to have ready by the end of this year….”.

nope bad move. They need a real publisher/producer over there to rope things back down to reality, and get the feature creep in check. Timing is critical now, and they are shooting WAAAAYYY past the first promised launch window, which was supposed to see the game on our PC's by now. Frankly, the lack of discipline over there borders on being unprofessional.

Well I guess we don't need the forum yet then smile

Since originally they had said early this year, then it was delayed till march/april. But an expected release of end of the year is something I can't sit watching like some did for storm of war. It's not healthy that kind of anticipation.

Better we get on with what other sims we currently play and check back on x-plane in January to see if it's going to release. I'm sure SimHQ will post some news when it gets close.

But KUDOS to them for pushing the boundaries. Even if we wait another year I'm looking forward to seeing a next-gen sim.

I think 2011 already sees lots of new sim releases and patch developments, so it's not a bad idea to release in 2012.

If it were a larger company working on a title that was going to ship millions of units, then yeah, a proper production team would be handy. I'm not sure whether a publisher would help as they only ever push for their own corner (as in "We gave you this money, and we WILL get what WE want on OUR terms"). The X-Plane operation is pretty small, and when things get tricky they can't really throw manpower at it. Austin is a bit of a nutjob genius. Lose the nutjob, you'd probably lose the genius too.

I wonder when Flight will be released and how different it will be from FSX. It looks like XP10 and Flight will compete directly.

thats my exact worry. XP10 has always been an also-ran compared to the MSFS line, and there's a lull in civ sims now that they could fill. They have a critical moment this year to get ahead of the game, and I'm worried they're trading that for more game features.

X-Plane and Microsoft Flight Simulator (even if it is going to just be called "Flight") are a bit like the "Taste Great / Less Filling" or "PC vs. Mac" of the flight sim world. I'm not so sure that the timing of XP10 is all that critical because there just seems to be so much entrenchment in the civil flight sim market. Heck..there are people that won't budge off of FS9 because of their investment.
