I think the thread starter asked about quitting CFS -as in the original- not CFS3. I still have CFS installed but don't play it. The graphics are just too dated. The only reason I keep it is for Tuskegee Airmen expansion. CFS2 was so much better, there was little point to keep playing CFS. Also, Microprose came out with EAW which was 50 times better than CFS, and then there was Janes WWII Fighters, which was also 50 times better than CFS.

I really enjoyed CFS 1 and 2. I thought CFS 3 was bad joke. I was selected to beta test the original IL-2 and never flew the CFS series again. Although I think CFS3 came out after IL-2 if memory serves. I deleted IL-2 when IL-2 Cliffs of Dover came out. Unfortunately COD had to be released before it was finished, but we should be seeing patches every few weeks until its up to speed in maybe a year. Its interesting learning the new engine management and targeting which is much harder than IL-2.

Microsoft released CFS3 in late October 2002 and IL-2 Forgotten Battles was released three or four months later, after the holiday season had ended. (Yes, I know the original IL-2 Sturmovik came out long before CFS-3.) Anyhow, the timing initially worked in Microsoft's favor because there wasn't much competition in this genre during the Christmas shopping season, but the disappointing execution of the sim caused many here to speculate that it had been packaged and shipped 'as is' so Santa could put it in his sleigh.

At that time I was more looking forward to CFS3 than Forgotten Battles because I longed for a Western Front sim to replace Jane's WWII Fighters and European Air War. I was disappointed by the overall release just like everybody else but I stuck with CFS3 for a couple of years as light entertainment, strafing vehicles and airbases in Free Hunt mode. I always thought it was funny yet sad that Microsoft put so much effort into crafting extremely high-detailed ground units but then gave us aircraft cockpits that looked like a child's drawing. And as far as flight modeling, I couldn't take seriously any sim that causes a P-47 Thunderbolt to fatally lose most of its engine power after just one small-arms hit to the engine. I think that as Forgotten Battles began to expand its coverage to global theaters I had less and less patience for CFS3, even with the FirePower expansion.

About a week after I got IL2.. in 2002.. I had CFS 1 & 2 and was waiting with bated breath for CFS 3which was still the biggest letdown of any piece of SW I have ever purchased. I could never get my MSFFB2 to work right in CFS3. I also never did like the MS ground textures..The buildings look good.. andf some of the scenery is really detyailed but those mottled ground textures always turned me off.

Many years. I still have CFS1 and 2 in their original large box with full manual and CD case etc. I will be putting them on Ebay soon. Should get about 10p for them biggrin

I couldn't play CFS3 at first as it needed (for then) a tougher graphics card. By the time I got it sorted I had bought IL2 and I never looked back.

I still have CFS3 somewhere and the firepower addon's I just never got around to playing them. I kinda prefer the way it looks in some ways and the I prefer the aircraft you got to fly.

IL2, I tried for many years but found hard to like. Sniper AI gunners ruin it a bit. I could never get my joystick to work fully with it.

Did anybody else notice that the Combat Flight Simulator forum was rolled into the General - WWII Air Combat Simulations forum?
