I think this has to do with copying one of the files and renaming the copy but I don't remember which one.

Just in case someone does know the answer here is your post from M4T.

a)Clicking "Setup" on the main Stab menu results in a window advising that XP is "Unable to launch C:\ProgramFiles\Ubisoft\IL-2Sturmovik1946\IL2SETUP.EXE."
b)The "Options" pages appear, but the "Apply" box on each and every page is gray, which is to say nonfunctional. I can, for example select the correct FAF markings, but then I can only click either "OK" or "Cancel;" this of course merely closes and resets the page.

Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't seen this issue before. Have you got IL-2 installed into 'C:\ProgramFiles\Ubisoft\IL-2Sturmovik1946' , and can I ask where you installed Stab to?

Thank you for the replies so far.
I put the entire Stab 6.3 file in the main game file. That's where it was when I opened it and ran the Stab exe. That started the installation wizard, which seemed to work fine. I can launch the game using the LAUNCH jellybean on the Stab menu. It's keeping track of missions as well, and although I haven't used the pilot's log, that too seems to work. The options dialogues, however, are as I described them, with gray "Apply" boxes.
By the way, I have tried the Stab menu with the game on the task bar (Ctrl-F1). The situation is the same. I have a feeling I missed a step during the installation process. In any case, the entire Stab 6.3 file is still in the main game file.

I'm not quite following you, but I'll describe what I think is the best way of doing it, and see if you can figure out if you've done it any differently, or just try doing it this way.

1. Open the IL-2Stab.zip file (the original zip you downloaded) and extract it to a folder, say for instance, one on your desktop.
2. Run the Setup.exe within that folder, which will prompt you to install Stab, default location being C:\Program Files\IL-2 Shturmovik Stab - which is fine for you on Win XP.
3. it will then try to detect where your IL-2 install is - check it's detecting the correct location.
4. Upon finishing install, Stab will start up. Check to see if your greyed out buttons are still grey, and if your il-2 setup still won't open.

Hope that helps!

First off, I need to thank wheelsup for shifting that description from M4T. That was very helpful; as may be inferred from the original question, I wasn't sure if anyone at sims was still handling the Stab mods.
Novotny - I'm just after uninstalling Stab, then, to be on the safe side, downloading and installing a fresh copy. The download landed on the desktop, so I extracted the file to a temporary file in Downloads. I then ran Stab SETUP.EXE in the temporary file, and the installion process ensued much as before. The results were not quite the same. I'm still getting the above-described message when I click the "Setup" jelly bean, and the "Apply" boxes in the Options dialogues are still gray. On the other hand, checking the box for the corrected Finnish markings does work; the aircraft in my Finnish fighter pilot's career do have the old blue swastikas. Now I'll try some of the other graphics functions.

Hmm,I think there's something strange going on here. Just to check: is your Il-2 installed to 'C:\ProgramFiles\Ubisoft\IL-2Sturmovik1946'?

I think you need to make a copy of the il2fb.exe and name it il2.exe or something like that to get it to work.

Cheers,

I was wondering about that myself, having seen that advice given out in years previous, so ran through the install to see what happened; but it worked for me without changing the name. I hadn't used Stab in a long time. Still, if the chap is still having problems, it's definitely worth exploring.

The game is at C:\ProgramFiles\Ubisoft\Il-2Sturmovik1946. As a matter of fact, I flew a couple of missions an hour or so ago, and just this minute I restarted the game, using the Stab menu, and ran a quick test of a Finnish mission. The aircraft in the mission had the corrected FAF markings. I'll attach a screenshot. The "Apply" box in the options dialogues may be grayed out, but those particular features do seem to be working.
I have a print-out of the relevant README page in front of me. Those are the instructions I've followed, and there's nothing about changing any file names. It just says "Unzip the contents...to a temporary folder," then: "Run SETUP.EXE." The installer did go blank for a couple of seconds, just before it told me it was done.
I did rename the temporary folder, as "StabTemp," before I extracted the contents and ran the setup.exe. The temporary folder is now in "My Documents," just in case. I wrote a copy of the
original file to a disc.

Are you logged in as the administrator, or are you the sole user of this computer? I'm wondering if the OS thinks that il-2 stab isn't allowed to run other programs. Must admit I'm quite stumped on this one.

I am logged in as the administrator.
The good news is that, so far, the Stab software is providing the features I was looking for, especially the corrected markings and, as nearly as I can tell, other enhanced graphics. Moreover, I don't really seem to need to use the "1946 Setup" function, whatever it may be.

I certainly appreciate your help, Novotny.

Well I'm glad things seem to be working as much as you need them to, even if we didn't really figure anything out.

All the best!

Hi all, while on the subject of Shturmovik Stab issues...mine mostly works great, however the option to adjust campaign lengths seems to have no effect on the Pacific campaigns, even though it works just fine for ETO campaigns. Does anybody have any ideas how this might be rectified? I'm running IL2 1946 BTW...might be handy information :-) any help gratefully received!

For some reason that option was not enabled in the Pacific campaigns.

FB only - allows to reduce a number of missions in campaign.

DGen Studies is interesting reading if you want to learn about several of the intricacies of DGen.

Asura's DGen update thread at M4T.
Asura has been working on an update to DGen for quite some time now. Be careful about using it if you are already running campaigns. It will only work on new ones it generates and breaks any old ones that are not finished.
