FYI though, they have a sort of micro-transaction system (which isn't really micro now that I think of it... but the premise is the same.)
You don't get a huge cadre of aircraft on initial install, but you can buy other aircraft that they've developed if you want. I haven't done any of that and just use what's given.
It's a really pretty game and the damage modeling on the planes is bar none. Quite amazing.
I also tried OFF, but you know, that's a really dated engine and it's getting long in the tooth.
I think you'll be more satisfied w/ ROF, but that's just my humble opinion.
But did you try OFF: Beyond Heaven & Hell (Phase 3)? Or did you try an earlier version? ROF is fun for single aircraft physics and dogfighting online or offline, but OFF:BH&H has the most important thing in flight simulation for me: IMMERSION. I own and play both. I find myself spending a lot more time with OFF:BH&H than ROF.
