Quote:
ASRock is trying to be the first to produce an AM3+ motherboard supporting AMD "Zambezi" processors.

Based on artwork sent in by ASRock, the company is gearing up to be one of the first manufacturers to release a motherboard supporting AMD's next-generation "Zambezi" Fusion Black processors. The board will be named the ASRock 890FX Deluxe5 and based on the AMD 890FX + SB850 chipset.

Slated for a release by the end of February, the board's AMD3r2 (aka AMD3+) CPU socket will be compatible with existing socket AM3 Phenom II and Athlon II processors as well as the upcoming 8-core AMD3+ processors. For the gamer, the motherboard will support AMD Quad CrossFireX, 3-way CrossFireX and a two-card CrossFireX setup.

lil nitpicky on the article though, how do you support 4-way sli with only 3 PCI-E Slots!?

Edit: Nevermind, forgot about 2x DualGPU Cards in SLI is Quad SLI

Compatible with existing AM3 processors !! that's huge. AMD does it again if this is true.

Edit , but will the Bulldozer CPUs be backwards compatible with the old socket ??

All this support for ATI I understand but I have and always will be an Nvidia user, just don't like the ATI cards so what about that? Does this mean that it's intended for an ATI only Vid card set-up? I thought SLI was on the way out, does this mean that you'll have to buy 2 video cards from now on if you want a Kick-butt system?n and maybe 3?

Bulldozer is an AM3+ socket. I presume that means it will work in older AM3 motherboards. However, "something" (don't know what) will be missing -- except in AM3+ motherboards. That "something" may not be needed by many folks. And, being able to buy a MB now that one could plug a Bulldozer in later could be a good choice for some.

AMD is rumored to be releasing a 9xx series chipset along with Bulldozer to make all features of Bulldozer available as designed.

According to the Article:
"The lineup will start with the AMD 990FX chipset with AM3+ and AM3 support for high-end motherboards followed by the 990X chipset with AM3+ and AM3 support for mid-level boards. The 980G chipset will round out the 9-series, offering integrated graphics for low-end systems but will not support older AM3 processors."

So the Highend 900 series chipsets will have Legacy AM3 support, while the cheapest/lowend will only support AM3+.

When AM2 went to AM2+ alot of Mainboard Manufacturers added support for AM2+ Chips with a bios update. minus of course the features that came with AM2+ Chipsets. We also have boards that support AM2+ and AM3 on the same chipset but they cost more, where as Pure AM2+ or Pure AM3 boards are cheaper.

So Maybe some AM3 boards will get a Bios Update to include AM3+ Chips but you wont have all the AM3+ 900 Series Chipset goodies to allow full use of the AM3+ Chip.

As For the Crossfire vs SLI, AMD chipsets dont support SLi and nForce dont support XFire, if you want SLI you'd have to find a nFORCE AM3 board, AMD for an Xfire board.

Thanks for clearing that up SkatZilla. Reading complete articles continues to be a challenge for me. thumbsup

I'm impressed about it and now put on hold my plans to go Sandybridge.

It's a good surprise that we don't have too long to wait.

That is nice, but does this mean they will stop production of the Phenom 955/965 and the 1090T? Or any price reductions or them?
