As promised, this was the "brief"we was given.
No333 then went out on there Recce Flt and come back with the following goods.
The Recce Flt has strict orders not to engage the enemy.
Now dont think this is a short straw(ang on,who keeps mentioning height !!!!) because we fly the mssion that we give a breif on and we know what to expect(yeah ok the mission builder make it that simple exitstageleft.

Heres the breif..........

Over the past 3 months, enemy air opposition had been fairly sporadic against the Wing. The Germans would no longer be content to send out single or small mixed groups of fighters to attack the Beaufighters and Mosquitos.

On the 7th December, Staffels from JG5 moved into southern Norway and from this point the Strike Wing would be met with up to 40 enemy fighters, including Fw190's and Me109's, nearly every time the wing flew a strike operation.

The Luftwaffe had 50 109's and 30 190's in operation from several bases including Gossen, the Mustang escorts were going to be kept very busy for the next for months...........

EXTRA NOTES:-

More details will posted later this week, however I thought you ought to have some warning about this mission so you could adjust your Tuesday training to suit.

The "photos" will have to be taken using Fraps or some such other method of taking screen shots. The screen shots must be from within the cockpit of the aircraft, no outside views.

You will need to post these photos into a place where the rest of the Strike Wing can see and study them. A post in the Ops Room would seem the best idea.

You may if you wish fly the mission earlier on Sunday than normal or indeed any other night so you have time to get the photos posted. Try to avoid TP nights.

Any questions ?

And heres the results we come back with that the Squadrons of Banff had to decipher and decide what was there options.......

BANFF 07 RECONNAISSANCE REPORT

Reconnaissance reports that over Gossen the weather was clear with scattered cloud. Some ground haze was present making individual targets hard to see. Photographs were taken as follows:

1. From south of Gossen providing an overview of the island.

2. From the NW so that all of the airfield and harbour can be seen. The aircraft appear to be a mix of bombers and fighters, with the fighters concentrated to to the east of the runway. Out of shot to the right was a transport ship that appeared to be stationary.

3. The cluster of building and vehicles to the eastern end of the runway.

4. The harbour that is north of the eastern end of the airfield.

5. One further picture from the NW.

Some 88 flak bursts were seen. Predominantly the flak appears to be of small calibre (37mm and 20mm) but quite dense. Lingering in the target area is definitely NOT recommended. To the SW of the island was a flak battery of what appeared to be 88s. All flak is protected by sandbags and/or revetments.

The recommended method of attack is for an anti-flak force to proceed the main strike force by 30 seconds. Using rockets at least some of the flak should be taken care of in one pass. Thereafter the main strike force should attack from the SE with targets assigned beforehand.

Note: During recon an Arado float plane was shot down, and one Mosquito, piloted by F/O. Merlin, came under attack by two FW190s that were then destroyed by F/Lt Mosie and F/O Madmick.

Photographs:

Ill post the results afyer ive had my Dinner smile

No333Sqdn took off from Banff 5 minutes before No235 and 404 Sqdns to lead the way to the target and to act as flak suppression
(a vital job, with plenty of risks attached to it).
We made good time to the tgt,Tom And Mick with there rockets went into attack the shipping while i took Black Flt into attack the Ack Ack.
We got the message very soon after that they had both been taken out by the ships gunners(not before getting a couple of salvos into them).
As soon as i had hit an 88 position Punch,my wingman shouted over comms telling me i had a 110 on my six(good call mate).
Punch then went on to destroy the 110,but as soon as he had despatched 1 another one was on his six.after a good tussle with the 110s,Bigbyte asked if we needed help(bloody right we did),i turned with the remaining 110s to heading that would bring BBs flt head on.Fantastic, a minute later high above us i saw the Beaufighters coming to our aid.
Yep you guessed it the twins where more bloody 110s(Bunny,the mission builder can be a right %~*$ at times.....
Meanwhile the attack was going in as planned and a number of heavy ships(well 2!!!)went to the bottom of the Norwegian Fjords.
This campaign is absolutely fantastic and the 30 odd that turn up have to work hard as a team to get the mission points awarded.
Special mention has to go to Handsome(ive met him,hes not!!!)
Downing 2(possibly 3 110s) in his Beaufighter,great job mate.
A few pics and what the mission was based on(historically).

HISTORICAL DETAILS:-

A total of sixteen Mosquito aircraft from 143,235,248 and 333 squadrons attacked shipping in Lervik (we used Lonevaag ) harbour, destroying two large merchant ships and sinking an armed trawler, the SEEHUND-Vp 5304 (Vornostenboot), they were usually ex-trawlers used for convoy escorts.

These converted-armed trawlers were usually between 150 and 750 tons (the Seehund was 320 tons), and carry 88mm guns, 2Omm guns and machine guns. These were what the R.A.F. referred to as flak ships. Along with intense flak the strike force had to fight its way home through a pack of nine FW 190s. (I decided to use 110's to make it a little more even).

The fighting was fierce a MK XVIII Tsetse Mosquito firing its Molins gun at the attackers managing to frighten them off, but not before the strike force suffered serious losses. Six Mosquito’s were lost in the action, the heaviest losses sustained by the Banff wing in any one action.

Amongst those killed was Wing Commander J.M. Guedj DSO, DFC, the popular Frenchman who had only been given Command of 143 squadron a few weeks previous and who had been a popular choice amongst the aircrews. His navigator Flight Lieutenant J.F. Langley was also killed in Mosquito "K" of 143 squadron.

Other aircraft missing were Mosquito "D" of 143 squadron which crashed near Fjell, the pilot Flight Lieutenant G.A.M. Moncrieff missing, while navigator Flight Sergeant C. Cash’s body was recovered and buried in Mollendal Cemetery, Bergen.

Mosquito "V" of 143 squadron was lost with pilot Lieutenant F.F. Alexander (USAF) and navigator J.A. Mcmullin. Mosquito "A" of 235 squadron shot down with pilot F. Chew who was buried in Mollendal Cemetery. While his navigator Flight Sergeant S.W. Couttie survived and was taken prisoner and Mosquito "R" of 333 squadron with pilot Q/M K. Sjolie and navigator C/M M.J.S. Gausland (Norwegians) also lost during the strike.

This attack also proved to be 248 squadrons MK XVIII Tsetse Mosquito’s last sorties from Banff before leaving the base to leave the squadron to operate MK VI Mosquito’s only at Banff.

S!

Two pilots from 489 Sqdn(normally No333 Sqdn, but for this op we was 489Sqdn) took off for the Recce Flt on sunday eve an hr before the actual mission begun.
Sqdn Ldt Tom and myself found the targets after a 20 min flt east of Svanoyna, and what Targets the where!!!

We landed back at Banff and relayed our info to the varuous Sqdn Ldrs who would then make up a plan to attack.
A Cruiser and various Kreigsmarine vessels where sighted!!!

It was always going to be a tough nut to crack, but the plan was decided to hug the grnd and"pop up"north of the tgts, where we hoped the grnd would mask our approach!!!

I was 1st(unfortunately) to get to the tgt and as i readied myself for the return fire i over flew the Cruiser!!!!!
Honestly it had nothing to do with usually flying a Mossie and the Rckt button being in totally the wrong bloody place!!!! I thought i would go around again!!!!
After getting a packet and red mist coming over the cockpit the flak finished me off!!!!
As it did to 11 of us that night.
I blame the mission designer!!!!

Plaes have a look at the original mission here http://404squadron.com/blackfriday.html
It makes for very good reading and makes you think what them boys(on all sides) had to go through......

Target in sight!!!

Heavy Ack Ack!!!

What happened to so many of us on this mission!!!

oops

Two "Vickers Warwicks" with a detachable lifeboats will be patrolling in grid G11 and grid E10. Any pilot who ditches safely in these areas will be deemed to have been "rescued" and returned to base. His aircraft will still be lost however.

NOTES:- The Mustangs will be on separate comms

Good Luck

Hatter

Know Hatter has been known to make some fantastic(if not a bit sadistic) missions in the past, hope i survive this one(will make a change)
