You will kinda understand in general what is going on BUT you will miss a lot of the undertones and you wont be emotionally invested in the characters so some of the events most likely won't be very compelling to you. I watched Serenity again AFTER I watched Firefly and the movie was a completely different experience. Yep I went that path after talking with my brother about the movie he loaned me the series and then I went back and rewatched the movie and got more out of it. Then I bought the 2-disc edition of the movie with all the new extras (original was barebones). Then I bought the series on bluray for the better picture and new extras. Then I bought the movie on bluray because it was cheap and I think has a few new extras. I have WAY too many of these discs.
