I would guess the Android version is pretty much the same as X-Plane for the iPhone. I have certainly had my money's worth from the iPhone version.

I have the Android version and it is a lot of fun. It is actually one of the more impressive apps, and by far the most complicated I've seen for the Droid. Mine is an HTC EVO 4G and it works very well on it. Don't expect FSX quality scenery or anything though. I'd say it is worth the $9.99 price tag.

If you are not in a hurry, I would wait for X-Plane 10.

What he said. X-Plane 10 looks like is is going to be another few steps forward. Of course, XP9 seems to be getting cheaper by the day. And you could always just download the XP9 demo and fly it in 10-minute stints just to check it out and see if you want to buy the whole thing.

Is X-Plane10 going to require over 70GB of HDD space for a full install too or have they come up with a more efficient method?

The more efficient method is only installing places that you'll fly in.
So, yeah, it still takes up about 20-30gb.

They've just released a new Android version which now has "in app" purchasing. So you can buy the sim for a moderate cost, and then add aircraft, scenery etc from within the app itself. Quite a neat idea.

I've posted a bit more detail here (hope it's okay to post the link!)

I've seen reports that the X-Plane android app does not work on all phones, because it uses a graphics set that isn't standard and which some phones does not support (like the new Samsung Wave S II), because it's not part of the official spec for graphics.

For some reason or other the Samsung Galaxy SII is not supported. Maybe it is the Mali-400 GPU. It works great on my HTC Desire HD (Adreno 205 GPU)... not bad for US$4.99... of course if you add all the add-ons planes and scenery it is going to hit US$60. Have a mini review here: X-Plane for Android

I've got it - it's alright.
You're simming on a smartphone at the end of a day. Go in with realistic expectations.

I got my first X-Plane add-on, the F-4 Phantom... my only complaints are:

1) The only cockpit option is the virtual cockpit (no dash);
2) Combat it mandatory unless you select the San Francisco map.

If I decide to fly the Phantom in any other map other than SF, I have to dogfight an enemy plane. It would be preferable if combat was optional even if I selected a different region. It is okay to have a dogfight option for my 0.99 cents, but I think I will stick to non-fighter planes... dogfighting on X-Plane does not feel too "sim" like.
