Just as I expected, there is no definitive news yet and little to no chance of anyone picking SGU up for a full 3rd season. And with time passing, the best possible bet that I see is a 2-hour movie (and as more time passes, that chance slowly evaporates).

Skatezilla mentioned a possibility of SG:U going to the MGM network. I guess that would have made the most sense.

That bites. I was hoping there would be a rescue or as you say Razorback some kind of movie to tie things up.

It sounds like the writer is off to Toronto to work on a series treatment of The Transporter? Or fantasy show.

I looked it up on the Interweb thingy and seems like the MGM network is on this thing called DirecTV.

I am pretty sure DirecTV said they were out of the "save our show" business.

It is all about the ability to make money. If that tiny little obscure network can somehow magically generate enough revenue for MGM to justify the cost of more SGU, then it will happen.

Of course that is understandable. SG:U will die then because if it wasn't profitable on SyFy I just dont see it being profitable on any other cable network.

I watch SG:U on a local station here. #45. Last Sunday they had on Season 1, Episode 11 – Aired: 4/2/2010 Space (1)
When the communication stones malfunction and transport Young's consciousness to an unknown alien vessel, the crew of the Destiny reveal themselves to a powerful race.

Sure, just when it's finally getting good they'll cancel it. Should have had aliens earlier in the storyline me thinks.

SGU's best bet right now is a direct-to-DVD movie. Wrap the story up in 90 minutes but leave an opening for more story in case the DVD sells well.

Every second the show is out of production is 2 seconds added to the chance in hell that the show will come back. It is very difficult and expensive to put a show back together once it is canceled. They need to make a deal soon.

At this stage I would bet good money that SG:U is dead. Having said that, I do plan on renting the dvd's and watching SG:U some day. It just seems to be the kind of dark and brooding show that I love. smile

Sure, the actors on SG:U may not be as good as those on BSG but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like the show.

The Problem with the "new" fans is that the first season is pretty much a Stargate/Ancient/Character Back story, so People coming into SGU from no Stargate Past at all will be confused about stuff.

Especially Episodes that Pertained to the Ships Functions and the History with the Ancients ya da ya da ya da. They tried to make the ship OLDER to allow them to make it different from Ancient Tech we've already encountered to make it easier for new Viewers but when Rush says "We've encountered it before, a older version of this/that" etc etc etc. New fans would be confused.

The SG1/Atlantis Fans Merging to SGU (The ones that didnt Boycot SGU because they though it was the reason for SGA Being cancelled) have more patience and interest in the Ancient backstory involving why the ship was launched etc.

MGM Hasnt sent out any Memos/Emails to shareholders since the last one, and IM pretty sure at this point networks that were a lil interested are prolly not even talking to MGM anymore. so its most likely Direct to DVD or nothing. The problem there is there is at least 4 story lines that need closing in a 90 minute window.

SG1 barely closed 1 story line in the 90 minute window and they left ALOT of stuff out of "The Ark of Truth" which also cut them off at the knee's for future direct to DVDs.

I find most shows take a while to get into. I can only think of one show in the past few years that I knew I loved within a few minutes of seeing my first episode (CHUCK, and that was after skipping it for a season because I was sure I would hate it).

Even the BSG miniseries was something I had to watch twice. I still don't know what my problem was the first time... actually, I think it was all the negativity I heard from people about it. It jaded my viewing.

At least the ones that have any depth to the characters and stories. BSG was one rare exception. I was immediately hooked after seeing the miniseries.

I love this press release from SyFy about the return of SGU:

Stargate Universe – Returns Monday March 7, at 10PM – Syfy’s drama-adventure series returns for its anticipated final ten episodes. The new episodes pick up with the Destiny crew in a battle with a drone command ship and the surprise arrival of the aliens that abducted Dr. Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle) and Chloe (Elyse Levesque). The final season culminates with a dramatic conclusion for the fate of the Destiny crew, who face a difficult crossroads when they realize the time has come for them to take a risky stand…or they will be left adrift forever.

Guest stars appearing in the final episodes include Victor Garber (Alien, Titanic), French Stewart (3rd Rock From The Sun), Robert Picardo (Stargate SG-1, Star Trek: Voyager, China Beach), Kathleen Quinlen (Apollo 13) and Julie McNiven (Supernatural, Mad Men).

Robert Cooper and Brad Wright, of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, serve as executive producers and writers. SGU is produced and distributed by MGM Worldwide Television Distribution.

I'm not sure why, but I somehow never watched an episode of SG:U until yesterday. I was flipping channels and ended up on Syfy. Now I'm hooked. Netflix has seasons 1 and 1.5 streaming so I started from the beginning last night and watched the first 3 episodes. I'm really sorry they cancelled this show. I'm sure Syfy will be quick to fill the void with something truly stimulating like more professional wrestling or some other crap that targets the IQ challenged masses....

"series returns for its anticipated final ten episodes."

I love press release spin. It is anticipated by those who watch it, for sure. But so anticipated that we had to cancel it....

Now, what happens if it comes back to huge ratings?

It won't come back to huge ratings when it airs vs highly rated new network programming and gets all the advertizing of a hemorrhodial cream.

Cable shows aren't really competing with network shows. Not in the way you might think. Cable viewers skew more toward watching cable shows than network. There is some weird mental decision "I won't watch network TV."

Dedicated viewers, no. I'm referring to the "swing voters" aka Nielsen independents who aren't wedded to watching either just network or just cable TV. My guess is the difference is probably a good .3-.6 in the ratings, ie if it got a 1.9 against CSI: Wherever, it would've made a 2.2-2.5 against a rerun of 20/20. When they operate on the edge like that, it might have made a difference.

Most Nielsen viewers are "swing" viewers. So, your guess is incorrect. The dedicated viewer makes up less than half of the average Nielsen number per show.

I have a Nielsen expert coming on my podcast on Sunday... if you want, I will link it to you so you can hear how it works. smile She has taught me a hell of a lot about ratings.

10pm on Monday is definitely not when HOUSE runs.

In fact, FOX doesn't program the 10pm hour.

I think Skatezilla was referring to the move to Tuesdays at 9:00 and preceeding Caprica which ran at 10:00. I forget what were the specific shows but both were definitely up against network programming.

In the case of Caprica though, it was getting lousy ratings even before it was moved to Tuesdays.

Tuesdays it was against 2 network shows that are on break right now.

Mondays I thought was gonna be a 9PM slot in an article I read which would have put it up against HOUSE, which is why its been pushed back to 10pm.

I dont see why they would leave it one tuesday and compete with 2 network shows now on break, but move it to mondays to avoid competing with V which is about to share the same fate as SGU.

1. It will ALWAYS be up against 2 (or more) networks shows unless it runs at 6pm or 11pm.

2. HOUSE is on at 8pm on Monday, not 9pm.

3. No clue... but I will say it again, cable viewers tend to watch cable over network shows, so they are not competing in the way you say.
