Fading gun sound - registry tweak

Had to reinstall B17 recently after a PC "factory reset". Had made the regedit tweak with the previous install, to prevent the gun turret firing sound stopping after a few bursts but have forgotten it now (I only remember it was slightly different in Vista than it had been with XP, but the essentials were the same). Have searched with regedit for A3D and B17 registry entries but can't seem to find the right one or remember the precise drill - involved changing a "dword" value from 0 to 1 or vice versa IIRC.
Can't get into bombsaway.net and can't find that particualr tweak here. Can anyone remember what it was and/or where to find it?
Cheers!

Yep, here's the fix, quoted from BA: Then, I went into the registry under Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microprose\B17\General and changed UseA3d from 0 to 1. If I then start the game using game.exe rather than b17setup.exe, my gun sounds are back in all thier glory!
Two things to note: I havent really tried this extensively, so I dont know if I will get CTDs etc... Another thing is that if you run b17setup.exe at any point after this, it will not let you tick the a3d setting, and will reset the above registry UseA3d entry back to 0. I'm using this fix on Vista and it works like a charm. key is to use the game.exe as the shortcut afterwards. No CTDs for me. Here's the new link to bombs away: http://www.bombs-away.net/forums/index.phpsmith

33lima Hi! I am a newbie at < B-17 Flying Fortress-the Mighty 8th > . Can't get started on "flying" until I clear up some questions.
QUESTIONS 1. Is it necessary to use your memory to operate the Default keyboard commands? 2. The default commands can be printed out using the Default < Control Keys > that appear on the last page , p 147, of the game Manual. 3. Do you use the Default commands ? Have you CUSTOMIZED the <Control Key>? If so, how can the CUSTOMIZED commnands be printed out?
Thanks for whatever advice you can offer!

Look under the Wow64 node in the Registry editor.

Thanks Argon,I found it under Wow32 node though. Unfortunately there is no entry for A3d.In fact there isn't much there at all.
In the B-17 options A3d is greyed out.Could that be why?
I've only just installed this on Win 7,I also have it on a second (XP) disc.I may boot to that and see what's what.

In the B-17 options A3d is greyed out.Could that be why? That's what I found in Vista 32 until I did the registry tweak. i couldn't select it under the options screen.

That's what I found in Vista 32 until I did the registry tweak. i couldn't select it under the options screen. Looks like I am boned then. I can't do the registry tweak.Actually I am pretty sure that the A3d drivers didn't install so I may have to re-install the whole game again (no biggy) and see what happens. In the read me it gives the web address for the sound drivers but it no longer exists.

The drivers are on the install CD - I think there's some instructions about running a file on the install CD to get the drivers. Edit: Okay, I think I found the answer: riginal fix by wombat778 from » Sat Mar 15, 2003 1:36 am I have Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Installed. Install B-17, do not install the a3d drivers...or the old direct X for that matter. Apply the 2.0 patch. Then explore the B-17 CD and use 7-Zip...(like winrar but 100 times better, it's a quality free program everyone should have) http://www.7-zip.org/...to extract the a3ddrivers310.exe files (rather than run it) into the B17 main directory.(Computer, local disk, Program Files (x86), Microprose, B17) Then, go to the run command line and type regedit. Once in regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microprose\B17\General and right click on UseA3d, select modify, change the 0 to 1 and click ok. Then exit and use the my computer to navigate to local disk, Program Files (x86), Microprose, B17. Then locate and start(double click) the game using the Game.exe file (Just says Game with a B-17 icon) rather than B-17setup.exe, -(there are two and there are three B-17 icons, make sure it's the correct one) Then play the game normally, your gun sounds will be back along with the mechanical turret sounds. It's a good idea while you are in that B-17 folder to right click the B-17 Game.exe icon (or list, I have icons turned on) and send to desktop (create shortcut) Rename your new shortcut to say B-17 Sound Fix or whatever so you don't click the wrong one. (you should have two on your desktop now) If you run B17setup.exe (start game normally) at any point after this the above registry UseA3d entry will go back to 0 and you will have to redo the fix. So if you make a change to the resoulution etc. just redo it and your all set. No problems for me so far. Much Thanks to wombat778!!! I can finally play this game without stutter and now with sound!

I was one of those that had to endure the fading gun sounds for years. I was always hesitent to do the registery hack so I just put up with it. Recently I was re-reading the posts at Bombs Away dealing with the fading gun sounds when I saw a post that said in some cases if you turn the Ambient Details in the Sound options to medium you would get rid of the fading guns sounds. I was skepitical because I believed it couldn't be that simple. Well I tried it and sure enough it worked for me Now enjoying the wonderful sounds of those .50's

I really can't get my head around this.I followed the instructions posted by Smithcorp. With my Win 7 64 bit I can see no A3d entry in the registry so I can't modify it. All I have is 2 B17 entries. Could I manually add the key into the registry and will it work?
On my XP disc I can see it and modify it.

Got an answer from Snuffy: Due to the rash of spamming attacks on the site, it was determined by the owner of the site, that since the simulation is no longer the attraction it use to be, and to eliminate the constant spamming attacks, that all registration has either been eliminted, or it has to go through the owner of the site who very rarely checks here.
Sorry. As an bypass to this, you might have your friend ask you what he wants and then you convey the messages for him. Happy to act as go-between.

I appreciate your help on this. Could you ask them this please? With XP I can find the registry entry for A3d and can modify it no problem. Having recently installed B17 2 on Win 7 64 bit I can't see a A3d entry in the registry. All I have is 2 B-17 entries. I followed this advice but it didn't seem to work... I have Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Installed. Install B-17, do not install the a3d drivers...or the old direct X for that matter. Apply the 2.0 patch. No the best news I'm afraid. Here's the response to my question on your behalf: For the record, the A3d setup were for ancient sound blaster sound cards. To get the then 'new' technology to work with the older programing of the sim. Seems sound was the only thing the programmers were given time to fix.
As it is, with all the newer technology, the use of the A3D drivers are not necessary, it does not affect the function of the game, and as far as I know in times past, has been recommended by certain persons here that with the new sound card productions, the sound works fine.
In my personal installation, I'm running XP Pro 32 on an older machine, probably 2 - 3 years old and I have no issues with the sound, and I have not installed the A3D thing.
You're friend is worrying about nothing. Tell him to forget the A3D and just install the game and go.
