Following Hellshade's lead, I too am going to attempt to keep all of my Rise of Flight Multiplayer videos in one thread instead of spead out. I'm hoping this way, folks may get a better overall feel for the multiplayer campaign we are currently playing.

All videos will be available in 1080P unless otherwise noted. Music(if any) genre will also be noted.

ENJOY!

Last Tuesday's (2/1/2011) Mission

Mission: The Albatros v1.07
Creator: O_TaipaN of Oceanic Wing.
Description:
Quote:

ENTENTE ORDERS:PRIMARY: Destroy the 3 Albatros prototypes being finalized at the enemy factory.
They must be destroyed within NINETY MINUTES before they are mobilised for transfer.

ENTENTE THREATS:
* Fokker Eindeckers are expected to be out in force today, determined to defend the new prototype models.
* Beware there is one Albatros on a test flight.
* Enemy lines are protected by AAA. Avoid airbases!
* Anti aircraft artillery is of low quality and the crews are generally inexperienced.

CENTRAL ORDERS:PRIMARY: Defend the 3 Albatros prototypes. They will take NINETY MINUTES to prepare for transfer.

CENTRAL THREATS:
* Intelligence indicates an expected attack from the air on our Albatros development factory.

HISTORY:April 1916. Entente and Central forces battle it out over a tiny stretch of land at Verdun. Ground support forces are on the move from both sides. The artillery barrages and human carnage are absolutely monstrous.

The Albatros D.I is being designed by Robert Thelen, R. Schubert and Gnädig, as an answer to the latest Allied fighters, such as the Nieuport 11 Bébé and the Airco D.H.2, which proved superior to the Fokker Eindecker and other early German fighters, and established a general Allied air superiority. It will be ordered in June 1916 and introduced into squadron service in August. At this stage, early prototypes are available for testing and their destruction may slow down the research, design and production of the Albatros

S!

NOTE: Some of you really want to fly the Albatros against the N11, I will get there in the next mission. I'm doing only 1-2 months progression per mission so that eventually I can turn them into a campaign. By the next mission, the Albatros will be invented ready to bloody some N11s/N17s.

Great video WWBrian. You fought on bravely even after being wounded! Did that EIII clip you at the end?
Glad to find another avid video maker too. I look forward to more of your work sir.

@komemiute: Thanks, multiplayer Rise of Flight is a lot of fun!

@Hellshade: I'm very much a beginner at the whole video-making stuff. But I'm having fun with it!

I don't think it counts as bravery though, when there are so many enemy planes in the air, you couldn't run even if you wanted to. pilot

But regarding being clipped, it's acually funny that you mention it. During the game I thought I was either hit by AAA, or that E.III sawed off my wing...

...only after reviewing the track did I find out that he clipped one of his wingmen (the guy that wounded me the second time) after snapping my right V-strut - and I pulled too many G's and my right wing broke off the rest of the way, as I was looking left...

One minute I was heavily wounded...then an explosion...then it was light's out.

(It sure is nice to be able to go back and review tracks to uncover those "What the hell just happened?" moments!)

A lot of fun!

Heres the moment captured....

...looks like I had 8 of them surrounded! hahaha

The second of the series

Happy was sitting on the field in his Tan-winged #4 Dh2. Perhaps his bladder was full as I never saw him once I formed up with the two Dh2s. And I certainly kept looking....

The escort itself was uneventful; passing by German observation balloons calling in archie fire from the forrest below. Not a single close call to anyone as far as I could tell. The most excitment came when a red flare was shot off by a distant downed N11 off to my 1 o'clock. I assume he was helping point out to the rest of the flight where the trouble was.

Finally, almost over the target, off my distant 10 o'clock was a green flare. This time fired by an enemy Fokker. He was very distant and I knew he was no threat to our fast-moving formation at that range; so I let him think he was sneaking up behind us and stayed on task.

Tharn began diving in and lined up on the right-hand hangar. His rounds found their mark even under the pressure of multiple enemys engaging behind him!

The another Fokker engaged Sandman's Dh2 and I broke to engage. Sandy then began his attack run on the center hangar. His rounds too hit home as a swarm of enemy gunfire wizzed past his machine.

I followed in last trying to persuade the defenders to find a different target!

A swirling dogfight ensued, Sandman made a second pass at the left-hand hangar, delivered some hits; but clipped the rooftop and augered in. I got target fixated through the gunsight of my N.11 on the enemy and I collided and augered in as well...Tharn began his second ran also, scored more hits and...well.....suffice it so say: we all met up near our reckage and limped back home!

the third in the series

Quote:

The third of six sorties I flew in our "High Flying Adventures" online campaign.

Flying the Nieuport N.11 in ground attack role.

Heavily outnumbered most of the match. It was tough to decide on whether to spend my limited ammunition on the prototypes, or on the masses of never-ending enemy Eindeckers trying to get behind me!

...at least I was able to limp back home after this sortie...

My trusty little Nieuport N.11C served me wel but was not so luckyl! - Rest her soul.

As for feedback of any kind, it tends to be sparse on videos from what I've seen. My previous OFF videos thread has 22,700+ views and only 120 replies, including my replies that were just adding new videos. You can tell by the youtube site how many times each video has been watched, of course, however praise and / or constructive criticism seems be few and far between. For whatever reason, that's just how it is.

Thanks Hellshade!!

This is exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for. As a relative newbie to video making, comments from other video makers especially, are not only welcome but encouraged! It's my way of kind of getting a general idea of what folks like and don't like. What seems to work and not work for others...etc...

Do I make them long or short? Is text better than a voice-over, or no? Those kind of things.

...and as far as an opening logo...knock yourself out. I didn't invent the video-intro... biggrin ...so no idea thievery involved.

Thanks again HS, look forward to your next work as well.

I have been told from people who've watched my stuff that they don't care how long it is. That being said, length is really relative to how interesting the content is. As they say, "how long 5 minutes feels like depends on which side of the bathroom door you are on."

I generally tend to believe that voice-overs are better recieved than text, but even that depends on what the subject matter is. I've done a few "how to" videos for OFF that would have lost a lot of the effect if I put text in there instead of live, in-game commentary. On the other hand, a little text strategically placed and in the right font, ect, can go a long way towards helping to set a mood. For some of the Campaign videos I did, I put text fade ins for "April 17, 1918" and then the airfield name, then the rest in voice over. It really depends on what you are trying to achieve for the viewer. Both have their limitations. Nobody wants to read a wall of text, but a voice over with a commentator who sounds like pee-wee herman probably isn't going to go over very well either.

I think the most important thing is to just make the movies that are interesting or exciting to you. If you are excited about it, your creative juices will get flowing and you'll come up with some good stuff.

hahaha

doesshe

I hear ya on the voice overs. I wouldn't consider myself knowledgeable enough to provide any sort of "instructional videos".

And aye, I really enjoy recreating those memorable moments with online friends through video.

It's turning out to be quite a fun hobby on the side.

Thanks again.

My constructive criticism, or suggestion, would be to not fade out of scenes the way you do. Instead, either just cut them immediately from one shot to the next, or have them fade into each other. Depending on the program you are using, you can usually either drag each clip slightly over the other (so the clips kind of merge) or use a dissolve of some kind.

That way you are not constantly going to dark and suddenly cutting out the audio.

Yes, ( like the transition @ 2:16 on the video below?) I want to do that! But my application crashes everytime I overlap the clips. As you can also see in the below clip, I have issues with aspect ratios sometimes - I am trying different rendering settings to find the best quality picture.

Not sure how I did it in the video above ( it was made with trial version of Sony Vegas 9 ) - and I've now purchased the retail program. Again, when I overlap the clips to get that effect - my program crashes with an ntdll.dll library error. Might be cuz' my avi files are in 2560x1600? Not sure.

Originally Posted By: Razorback

I think I have some sort of auto-fade setting checked for the audio or something. All my avi file's audio fades in at the beginning. Maybe a setting somewhere, so I've been fading the video as well, or it looks even more awkward.

...but in the latest movie, there's a scene when a Fokker E.III colides with a Dh2...and they both happened to have blipped their engines off at the start of that scene ...are you refering to that scene? Perhaps starting at a different spot where the engines were on would have been less distracting.

I don't know -- but THANK YOU so much for the feedback Razorback! I really do want to get a better handle on all this stuff.

All these types of comments are very VERY welcome!

Thanks again.

I don't know why the program is crashing but you should probably seek out support from the Vegas site, if you have a paid program.

Here is an example of what I mean, with respect to your video, and how I would do it.

And here is how it looks in Sony Vegas (linking to the image instead of putting it in here since it will stretch the thread):

Thanks Razor - I *finally* got a handle ( I think) on the crashes due to overlapping...

...seems Sony Vegas doesn't use the 64bit LargeAddressAware ability, so I had to go in and add that ability to a few files....

Here's the result --

I didn't have any sufficient lengths of track to make a full-story video, as we were having some (possibly) mission-related disconnects from the server. So all I had to work with were a bunch of bits and pieces of track recordings from three different pilots including myself.

While not an "action packed" movie like usual - I threw this together to still get some practice with transitions in the video editor software...

Here's a little somthing from our latest WingWalkers "High Flying Adventures" online campaign.

( it's only in 720P as it wasn't a "finished" movie )

Not an HFA mission - but doing a little wingman practice with the same fellas online...

Just an online mission I flew with the OF and BH fellas this past week.

HFA Chapter 9 "Handley Pages"

Part 1:

Quote:

Another Fun-Filled High Flying Adventures Multiplayer Mission!

Three HP O/400s take off in the early morning hours to bomb an enemy factory complex.

I took off first, Happy second, and Wringer followed (with Geezer in his gunner position)

In-Flight footage was gathered from Geezers track in Wringer's HP - but ended a minute or two out from target - so the last bit over the target was gathered by NavyGunner's track from a few kelometers north of the target -- which made for some warpy track footage there at the end.

I think I figured out my crappy video quality for Part 2. I had some Interlacing going on that shouldn't have been.
...still trying to figue out all this rendering stuff...

Part 2:

Quote:

WWGeezer makes his run on the target in his HP O/400.

While WWNavyGunner and myself patrol over the target area in our Spad XIIIs, we spot multiple enemy contacts heading towards Geezer's location.

Performing some pretty handy teamwork, Navy and I were able to dispatch three Albatros attacking the HP O/400. And with a Pfalz D.III inbound after the bomber was down, we decided to turn for home.
