It sounds like you have this "solved" now, but in the future the best thing to do (IMHO) is to use a system restore to a point where you knew the game or application worked. I suspect you may be well past a safe system restore based on the changes you have done so far. I have found ATI drivers to be finicky with windows updates. After the restore is done, verify the game or app is working the way it was and then try a windows update. However, choose the update you want and you may find the offending update through trial and error. If you find an update that is breaking the app you can tell windows update not to use it.
He doesn't have to do all that. He just needs to back up his Conf.INI file in case he has to re-install.
