Step by step guide on how to deploy GBU-12 - a laser guided 500 pound 'smart' bomb.

First off, printout or draw on a piece of paper all of your mapped buttons. This makes life a lot more easier.

Click "Instant Action" and select first mission titled "Easy-East Georgia-Spring"

Unpause game, let it fly for 5 seconds so that navigation switches to next waypoint and quickly press "L-Shift + L-Win + Pause" to enable "active pause"

Your cockpit should look like this.

Press those two buttons. Left button opens DSMS. Right button selects A/G

Select "GBU-12" and cycle "MASTER MODE CONTROL" (M) to "CCRP".

Moving on to the right side

Click CNTL button to change some settings in your targeting pod.

Press "Latch - off" button to turn it "on". Now when you turn on laser, you do not have to hold the button. (In flight Nose wheel steering fires laser)

Press RTN and TGP button.

Now lets find our target.

Press "CHINA HAT FORWARD LONG"(V) (slew camera to waypoint) and then "CHINA HAT FORWARD SHORT" (V) (zoom camera).

Move camera by using "SLEW" (, . / ; ) and use "DMS UP/DOWN"(END HOME) to get desired zoom level.

Press NWS (INSERT) (turns laser on) and Press "TMS FORWARD LONG" (Up + LCtrl) to mark / create a way-point for your sensor (creates SPI). Press again NWS (INSERT) to turn off laser.

HUD should now look like this.

Unpause game by pressing "L-Shift + L-Win + Pause"

Fly straight and level towards long line.

Those two lines should be near each other. Once you get close to weapon drop point, long line will have a little circle and a number 20. As the number gets smaller, circle with a number will drop. Your goal is to maneuver aircraft so that little circle goes through big circle. (Put a circle through a hole). When number reaches around 5, Press and HOLD "Release weapon" (Space + RAlt).

Once bomb drops, HUD will change to this. Press "NWS" (INSERT) to turn on laser. When you turn on laser a little "L" will blink. Number next to blinking "L" is time to impact. Once it reaches 0, bomb should hit where you're aiming.

So bomb is being guided to where targeting pod is pointing. So smart idea is to keep an eye on your targeting pod display and correcting laser spot. Play with "SLEW" (, . / ; ) and use "DMS UP/DOWN" (HOME END) and "CHINA HAT FORWARD SHORT" (V) .

And you're flying straight. Notice DSMS showing white color where you're bomb used to be.

Boom! Two vehicles are destroyed. Don't forget to turn off laser by pressing NWS (INSERT)

Congratulations, you dropped GBU-12. Small note. You should be at least 5K feet AGL (minimum ~10 seconds of free fall) or bomb will not have time to correct itself. Best altitude in my opinion is 10-15k.

Step by step guide on how to deploy GBU-38 (JDAM) - a GPS/INS guided 500 pound 'smart' bomb.

Select "GBU-38"

Moving on to the right side

(In case you want to use GBU-12 later) Click CNTL button to change some settings in your targeting pod.

Press "Latch - off" button to turn it "on". Now when you turn on laser, you do not have to hold the button. (In flight Nose wheel steering fires laser)

Press RTN and TGP button.

Press NWS (INSERT) (turns laser on) and Press "TMS FORWARD LONG (UP + LCtrl) " to mark / create a way-point for your sensor (creates SPI). Press again NWS (INSERT) to turn off laser.

HUD should now look like this. On a large circle there are two triangles. That's the range. See manual for more info about those triangles.

Unpause game by pressing "L-Shift + L-Win + Pause"

Fly straight and level towards that long line.

Once "MAN REL" shows, Press and HOLD "Release weapon" (SPACE + RAlt) until white color in DSMS.

Congratulations, you dropped GBU-38.

Nice tutorial!
i just would like to add that it is good to enter the CRTL page on the TGP and change Laser Latch to On.
Then, when slewing to the target and just before marking it with TMS Forward Long, it is good that you turn the Laser on.
That's because the TGP will normally look at the terrain behind the targets on the ground when there is no laser reflections. That's the main cause of virtual pilots not being able to hit targets with "smart" weapons like JAMs and LGBs.

To explain that better, there is a nice video by ExcessiveHeadspace on YouTube, where this process is explained in detail.

Thanks for the tutorial !

What I'm really interested in is to know better the different profiles options and their impact for each type of bombs. I have seen some in the tutorial missions but I'm sure that I'm missing a lot of infos.

Cheers,
Mat

Short is a quick press, long is a long press (0.5 sec). China and boat switches are the two bottom switches on the warthog's left throttle.

One question, when I have the long line and the shorter line with the circle on the end and I fly towards the target the small circle moves down the long line but before it counts down to '0' the whole line flys off the side! How do I stop this?

Also, does the line appear on the side of where the ordnance is located or should it be central? As it's the former for me...

It maybe you're out of position.

One technique is too keep little dot at 12 o'clock. That little dot represent where sensor is looking.

Another technique, a bit more exact, is to keep X on the line. X represent where your nose is pointing.

Nice well laid out instructions, just one minor point on terminology.

Quote:
Press "TMS FORWARD LONG" to mark / create a way-point for your sensor. (CCRP will not work without this step)

According to the manual with TGP as SOI, "TMS FORWARD LONG" is MAKE SPI (Sensor Point of Interest), to Mark Point it's "TMS RIGHT SHORT".

Cheers

Step by step guide on how to deploy AGM-65.

Click "Instant Action" and select first mission titled "Easy-East Georgia-Spring"

Unpause game and quickly press "L-Shift + L-Win + Pause" to enable "active pause"

Your cockpit should look like this.

Press those two buttons. Left button opens DSMS. Right button selects A/G

Select "AGM-65"

Moving on to the right side

Click "TGP" button to get rid of "Not SOI"

Screen should look like this now.

Press "CHINA HAT FORWARD LONG" (V) (slew camera to SPI) and then "CHINA HAT FORWARD SHORT" (V) (zoom camera). Screen will change to this.

Move camera by using "SLEW" ( , . / ; ) and use "DMS UP/DOWN" (HOME END) to get desired zoom level.

Press "TMS FORWARD LONG" (UP + LCtrl) to create own SPI.

Press "COOLIE SWITCH FORWARD SHORT" (U) to switch to Maverick sensor.

Press "CHINA HAT FORWARD LONG" (V) to slew Maverick sensor to previously created SPI. Press "CHINA HAT FORWARD SHORT" (V) to zoom sensor.

Screen should look like this now.

Now Maverick sensor is looking into proper direction, but it's not locked on.

Press "TMS FORWARD SHORT" (UP + LCtrl) to lock target. Large cross-hair should lightly vibrate signifying lock on.

Press "WEAPON RELEASE" (SPACE + RAlt) to shoot Maverick.
Congratulations, you fired AGM-65.

Why would you use targeting pod? Simple - it lets you find and select targets further out away from engagement zone of enemy defenses. Usually I cannot find anything beyond 2nm when using Maverick. With Targeting Pod I could easily stay away from SA9/13 engagement zone.

Once again, a simple, well thought out tutorial.
I didn't know about the "TMS FORWARD SHORT" to lock target. I'ld been slewing the crosshairs slightly and letting it lock! This would be much better!

Thank you.

Don't you have to set HUD as SOI (Coolie up short) before Weapon Release?

No, you don't have to do that. Weapon release works fine with any of the displays being SOI.

@Sim: very nice tutorial.

yep
