The new Special: High shadows setting is higher than the old setting was. The pre 1.016 Special: High shadows setting is the Special: Medium one now.

That I'm not sure of actually. I have a pretty high end system (Specs in sig), but because I'm running at 4584x900 across 3 monitors I have to set the landscape detail to Medium as well. I find that really eats up FPS and video memory... Especially on-line!

Ah, yes. I too wondered about that at first. Indeed Special looks better on my ATI 5870.

I only now found out what "Special" and "Common" actually mean. I thought "Special" meant shadows only on "special objects" and "common" meant shadows everywhere. Turns out "Special" is a more efficient way of rendering them, and it fixed the "pixelated shadows" I was getting with the ATI before. This is such a wonderful game, but occasionally a bit more documentation wouldn't hurt... Yep, same here. I thought they meant what you thought they meant, until I saw Han's post (or was it Loft's?).

I know there are now cloud shadows (which the team said had been optimized and should not really be noticeable) and there's a better sun glare. Can't see how either of this accounts for 10FPS? It almost seems like one of the settings is now a notch higher... did they increase the maximum ground detail or such? The ground is now rendered in more detail when on the ground and when flying at low altitude.

"Special" is the old way ( pre-4xx series nVidia), and "Common" is the current method (4xx series and newer nVidia). Not sure how all that relates to ATI users I'm afraid. This is such a wonderful game, but occasionally a bit more documentation wouldn't hurt... This has always been RoF's achilles heel!! ...I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

Ahh CLOD never in the history of Simming has so much been promised and so little given.
However I want to thank Team Fusion for keeping the Dream Alive.

It's actually a different way shadows are delt with entirely. "Special" is the old way ( pre-4xx series nVidia), and "Common" is the current method (4xx series and newer nVidia). Not sure how all that relates to ATI users I'm afraid. That's not quite right... From Han on the ROF team: Q: What is "Special" and what is "Common" shadows? A: "Special" shadows - it is existing RoF shadows which were in the project from version 1.001. They're using undocumented videocard possibilities, which are presented in ATI cards and NVidia cards except 4xx series. This shadows type provides more quality and more performance than "Common" shadows type, but they're incompatible with NVidia 4xx videocards. "Common" shadows - it is new shadows type which was implemented in RoF ver.1.014 to provide compatibility with new NVidia 4xx videocards. These shadows are using common and documented technologies, but they providing less performance and quality than "Special" shadows. So, if you're NVidia 4xx user - use "Common" shadows. If you're using another videocard - use "Special" shadows.

"Special" is the old way ( pre-4xx series nVidia) If you're using another videocard - use "Special" shadows. ...at the time of that writing, the 400 series was the newest card by nVidia. "Another" was anything previous to the 400 series. As he says "Special" was the way they've done shadows since version 1.001. Or do you simply not like my use of the term "different way shadows are delt with"? Too layman for general consumption? Oh well.

Enable "Force maximum performance clocks" and you will get those 10 FPS back. Worked for me. Is that nVidia? I've never seen this before...

WWBrian, you sounded like you were making the Common shadows out to be superior and better than Special shadows. When infact Special looks better and yields greater performance if you have a card that can do it that way.
