You're basically stuck. There's nothing really any good out there. You can't wave a stick without hitting a WWII aircraft sim or sub sim, gobs to choose from, but for the big surface kings, there's really nothing.
I've been waiting for this too, and have pinned my hopes to Storm Eagle eventually getting around to WWII BB combat. A long shot due to the ever present reality of airpower in history during that period.
so, in the meantime you can try out Pacific Storm. And its sequel Allies. Its an empire game, meant to be played at the country level not at the ship or fleet level, but the battles are ok. You can try making battles in their editor, but there are only 2 BB models per country regardless of how many ships you put in the scenario. Ditto cruisers and so forth. You'll end up with alot of repeated ships.
There's also The Fighting Steel project, but its been ages since its been updated and there's only so much the engine can handle. I love its simpleness and "get right into it" approach, but the graphics are REALLY old and its very buggy (on Win7 at least).
You mentioned Destroyer Command.
There's Battlestions Midway and Pacific. They're ok, The visuals are great but they're really gamey. As in consoley, counterstrike shoot-em-up bunny-hopping gamey.
There was also Enigma Rising Tides(?). By Tesseraction(?). IMO this one had the best of all worlds: an alternate history where carriers weren't really around (providing a plot excuse for the big gun ships to go toe to toe). It ostensibly stopped at Destroyer commanding, but you could patch it to at least command a Battlecruiser. IMO this engine was just what we needed! Too bad the company ran into business problems before they or the community could produce a nice library of ships (cruisers, battleships, etc). Loved this game! Its almost impossible to get running on Win7 though.
But yeah, if you're a battleship fan, you're kind of stuck. You can't even mention battleships without some yahoo trolling into the conversation whining about how they want subs or aircraft (even though there's a glut of these offerings already).
When I become a millionaire I'm building this game.
