While doing some research I stumbled across this PDF that AlphaOneSix had kindly posted. Gives a bit of insight into the how and why of the dust protection scheme. I found it interesting since I know a bit how the inertial separators work on the PT-6..

Nice job AlphaOneSix! thumbsup

It seem almost too simple a system. But then again some of the best designs are simple.

How much of a performance hit does the dust protector system cause? I've never switched it off.

I'm not sure if it is modeled in DCS: Black Shark, but normally activating any kind of anti-ice or inertial separator results in a slight drop in power (or torque) and an increase in ITT. I haven't watched the gauges in Black Shark to see if that is modeled in the sim..

I'm glad someone finds our cheesy training documents worthwhile! It's a very simple and elegant solution...it's really just a vacuum cleaner. As far as the performance hit goes, it adds about 30 degrees (C) to the PTIT (EGT, ITT, etc) so it does siphon off some power. Officially, having them turned on for an Mi-17 reduces your takeoff weight by 200kg (440lb), and you should be able to use that same number for the Ka-50 (same dust protectors, same engines).

The rise in EGT is modeled properly in DCS:Black Shark. When you turn them on, you will see a 30-50 degree rise in EGT. You will get power-limited at 990 degrees. So turning them off will give you a hint of a power boost. In the game, it takes hovering over the dust (i.e. in a visible dust cloud) for several minutes with the dust protectors off to cause damage.

No kidding! Wow..great to hear that is modeled. Last night I had my first experience with a high altitude flame out. I was up high trying to get over some mountains and had one of my engines overspeed (I think I heard the #%&*$#' Betty say something about turbine overspeed..I don't know..) But that baby wound down and I was in a place where I couldn't regain my rotor RPM by dropping into a valley.. So..boom..I mushed into the side of the hill.. Doh!

Love this sim...!

Yes the level of detail is amazing. I just hope we see many more DCS modules.

Good Morning Gentlemen,

The dust I am trying to get rid of is all around me when I land and it kills my frame rates and makes it very hard to see the helo in external view.
Can you tell me if this can be shut off in an options file somewhere?

Also I want to reduce the rotors graphics details to simple blur disks like EECH, again frame rates.
The human eye is not a stroboscope and can barely follow slow moving objects, let alone
spinning rotors. True realism here is a simple blurry grey disk.

Also, how can I lose my wingman on free flights?

Have a great weekend,
Thomas

I'm sure A-10 will be a great seller so I fully expect more DCS modules in the future. smile

@ Beach - Yeah, I've had the same rotor overspeed flame out happen to me at high altitudes. Doh.
