One of my squadmates Has this same issue. All we can tie it down to is his dual core CPU. I had them also but when I got the quad core soon after purchasing the game they were all gone.

I have Win7 64 bit on a dual core set up and I did have stuttering issues. However running it in compatibility mode for Win XP SP3 with the two lower boxes checked to disable also has sorted this out. If that doesn't work straight away try playing with the sound settings. disable/enable sound settings for game control etc. Only thing I do now whenever there is an update for RoF is run CC Cleaner to get rid of old drives and Restart Runtime for my graphics. It runs very smoothly on my modest dual core with an ATI 5750 at quite high settings.

Known issue, but not so much with the game... It's how the game uses a feature/code that's supposed to work but is crippled by Microsoft concerning dual cores and Win 7 64-bit. They have been in the talks with Microsoft about this...

if you have dual core use win xp 32bit
if you have quad core use win7 64bit (6GB of RAM recommended)

Yes, but RoF is a 32 bit application, so is limited to 2 GB of virtual RAM. For RoF to use more RAM the exe has to be patched 4 GB Patch HERE and then I would think MP would be impossible because of this "mod" (which really isn't a mod...), but SP is fine. The extra RAM is really very nice and helps smooth things out considerably, or maybe that is just wishful thinking...

Since this patch does not affect the in-game performance of the aircraft, I would hope the devs would see fit to allow patched executables for 64 bit OS's on the server. What do you all think?

Yep it's a confirmed issue with duel core 64 bit, there is a thread posted by admin on the official rof forum stating it as such. They even went as far as trying to contact microsoft for a patch with no reply.Don't ask me to find the thread I didn't bookmark it.

That is no longer necessary, because the devs did patch the exe in one of the last few update (i think in summer, can't remember).

And patching that file yourself wouldn't have worked, because you would've been unable to login (both offline and online).

I'm running ROF with Win7 64-bit, a Q9550 and 4 GB RAM. I have no problems whatsoever, except a general performance loss with the last update.

Did not know that if true, I will look into it to confirm... see edit below

Well, you're wrong. I've ran rof.exe patched from the first day I installed it and have had no issues with online or offline login at all. Now MP would be a different story, but I already acknowledged that in my OP...

EDIT: apparently others on this forum (at least) don't think the exe is capable of more than 2 GB either...

Making the [executable virtual memory] change would involve all of about thirty seconds work for the guys at 777, for inclusion in the next patch. It's a development decision that they've made not to make the executable able to address more than 2Gb of memory, on the grounds that it would then be highly likely that mission designers on x64 systems would be able to create and play missions that users on x32 systems would crash to desktop on every time they loaded it, and would not realise there was a problem until it had been tested for them by a 32-bit user.

So where is the truth?

Nice confirmation you did there.

Well look here, the flag is set.

And they did it with the update 1.012 they released in late april.

And i did try to get this to work before that with the CFF explorer and it didn't work, because of the copy protection system they're using. If the checksum of the ROF.exe changes (which will happen with the 4 GB patch), you can't start ROF.

Except of course, you are using the patch on the ROF.exe file after the 1.012 update, in that case, the patch would change exactly nothing.

Nice find but don't be a Richard, Matt, some of us are at work during the day...

No mention of the executable addressing more than 2 GB herePatch 1.012, one would think that would be news worthy, rather than hiding it. But who knows, maybe another patch?
