Hi all,

I have copied a post I made to the TSH forum. No replies and no help there. Anyway, I have things sorted out. I thought my experience might help someone here. I have not had a freeze or CTD for several days since the installation under Win98 compatibility and running the program without any compatibility. But, I am not stressing the program yet, only training missions.

Thanks, jimbo
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all,

New here, but I was around here back in 2004 or so. I haven't been doing much flight sim in the last several years.

I have Win7 Pro 64 bit installed on my new system. I also have a long term affection for Jane's FA-18. I have read everything I could find on this forum about running Jane's FA-18 on Win7. Looks like I am out of luck.

I have tried the Win7 XP Mode with no success. (As Joe pointed out in the "It just stops" thread.) I have installed in Win98 compatibility OK and the program actually starts in WinXP compatibility, but it freezes as soon as a flight starts.

Note: Compatibility options are not the same as WinXP Mode.

So, is there any hope that I will be able to run Jane's FA-18 on Win7 in the near future?

Thanks, jimbo

Edit: Here is a little more information.

CPU: Intel i7 Quad Core 930
GPU: XFX Radeon HD 5770 1 GB
RAM: Kingston DDR3 6 GB

As I said the program loads, but when I start any flight the screen goes black. Maybe this is a hardware issue, not Win 7?

Thanks, jimbo

Update: Here is the latest status.

Almost everything appears to be working OK now. What I did was install TSH v4.02 over my clean install per the Documentation. My previous problem was with the clean install. And I don't need any compatibility option to run the program. I didn't need any compatibility for JSGME. (I did need Windows 98 compatibility to do the clean installation without error messages.)

Anyway, one issue I had is one freeze, but I think this was in Win XP SP2 compatibility. I haven't had a freeze since I stopped using any compatibility options. And a second issue is there is no help voice in the training exercises. Prior experience had a voice that told what keys to press to activate guns, select targets, etc.

Thanks, jimbo

Thanks Jimbo -- not everybody has moved to win7 yet (I have) and so not many of us have gone thru all the learning curve that you have. I propose that your very first post here on SimHQ should be made a sticky. Well done, thanks for sharing this and sorry we didn't get to you sooner over at TSH.

Unfortunately the voice commands not playing properly seem to be side effect with newer operating systems (even as old as WinXP).

You can try Win98 compatibility mode just for these missions and see if you can hear the audio without suffering from too much instability. Then go back to your good settings from then on. Frankly, the training missions are not that helpful.

OK, running in Win98 compatibility restores the "cheat voice" in the training missions. And, so far there is no instability.

Thanks, jimbo

I just gave this a shot on my 7-64 box and it seems to be working well. I have The latest TSHv4 installed and it is also working as advertised.

Anyone have a link to the FOV mods?

Hi, I have upladed the 3 different FOV exes, link below.
Instead of the mod aproach, I renamed all 3,put to the game directory, set compatibility, and I just start whichever I need.
