I thought I would start a thread for my pictures. I hope you enjoy them. smile

I am going to start with Glacier Girl. If you don't know the story about her then this will help you understand why she is so unique.
Glacier Girl - The Lost Squadron (Recovery of a P-38 from beneath a Greenland ice cap: http://p38assn.org/glacier-girl.htm
Glacier Girl @ Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glacier_Girl

I got some pictures of Glacier Girl in August when she was at planes of Fame getting some maintenance done.
I lucked out and saw she was there when I was looking at the Planes of Fame website.

I've been to Planes of Fame a few times this year and I am planning on sorting through my pics over the holiday and posting some more.
I've got a few pictures of the 109 they are restoring too.

As I get things sorted I will upload them to this thread.
Hopefully with a description of where and when I took them. **fingers crossed**

Nice pics wheels, thanks. I believe Glacier Gal is one of the few remaining flyable P-38's in the world. And I remember seeing the TV show on the rescue and subsequent restoration. Quite a few personality clashes IIRC.

It’s been a long time since I saw the recovery of Glacier Girl documentary. What I do remember is them firing one of the cannons at a 55 gallon drum. eek2

There are 7 flyable P-38’s in the world and 6 are kept in the US. I never get it right but one is overseas in “Austria"? The 6 of them that are based in the US were supposed fly together in Sacramento CA on September 11th and 12th at the California Capital Air Show but only 4 made it. That would have been one more than I had ever seen flying in formation anyway. The most I have seen to date is 3 at the 2009 Chino airshow.

Hi, P-38 Fans:
Well, the really big show is history, and those of us who made it to the California Capital Air Show will agree that it did, indeed, make history. Read more about that below.

But there is no time to rest on our past victories. There's much more to be done to keep alive the memory of our favorite warbird. Welcome to the ride.

Blue skies,

If you follow the link in the quote there are some pictures of the planes in flight, all 5 of them on the way to the airshow, and pictures of the planes noseart. 23 skidoo had to land in Freso due to engine trouble.

SHHH, don’t tell anyone but there is a possibility that my handprints are on the plane. WinkNGrin

Sorry JAMF I couldn't get any closer than that even though they had someone working on her while I was there. I definitely wanted a few cockpit shots.

Nice pics! I saw the Glacier Girl at Reno in September. Sadly, it didn't fly in the races.

A couple of videos of the B-17 Fuddy Duddy leaving after the airshow at Chino in May 2010.
In the foreground is the FW-190 they will be flying for their monthly event in January.

Nice stuff Wheels. The nice weather and being so close to the active runway reminds me of Duxford - you probably get similar amounts of propwash from passing planes as well smile

Some pictures that I took on the 8th of January of the Flugwerks FW-190 "New Build" that Planes of Fame has at their facility.

The crowd was huge so getting picures of it outside without a crowd around it was impossible.
These were taken after they flew it and landed. Thye are still having engine cooling problems. frown

A video of 23 Skidoo starting her engines and taxiing before the flight demonstration.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hchJMYlXRk8

Some more pictures from Planes of Fame. The star of the day was the P-38.
Here they are towing it to the viewing area right before they did the flight demonstration.

Again the crowd was pretty big. Even bigger than in January it seemed to me. There was also one lucky 14 year old who got to take a ride in the P-38. He won this months raffle of an airplane ride. Normally it is the L-19 Birddog that they give you the ride in after you win the raffle. This month it was winners choice. smile

Glad you liked them. While I was there I took a few pictures of the B-17 "Swamp Ghost" too. The entire Plane is being stored at Planes of Fame but they only have the fuselage on display.

You can see the chain drive that the crank in the cockpit uses to raise the wheels.

Very nice, it must have been great to get an up-close look at an old warbird like that, and without having to fight the crowds. I get the announcements for those events, but it seems that they always happen on some day when I have to do something I can't get out of.

It is cool to get up close to them.
There just happened to be a lull in the crowd while I was taking those photos. There had to be at least 300 people there on Saturday. It's been getting busier every month.

More of the FM-2 Wildcat.

The last shot in my prior post reminds me of what I see in IL-2 looking at the plane with the exterior view (F8) when the plane is on the carrier deck and I have the wings folded. http://simhq.com/forum/files/usergals/2011/03/full-13732-7738-fm_2_008.jpg

I've been to Chino twice, and still don't feel like I have seen everything. I would loved to have seen it right after WWII, with the fields covered with hundreds of surplus aircraft.

Living in the Houston area, I have also been to the Lone Star Flight Museum down in Galveston. Well worth the time, if you have a chance.

I missed the B-25 that flew over my house about 20 minutes before these two P-51's flew over my house on the way back to Chino airport.

A couple of pics from inside the B-17 "Picadilly Lilly II" at Planes of Fame.

Looking out the plexiglass behind and below the top gunners plexiglass bubble. It wasn't the camera, the plexiglass is that dirty. biggrin

Looking towards the back of the plane from the radio room. The radio operator's desk is behind me and to the right. (The desk is not in the picture. biggrin )

Very nice :L You can't imagine standing in there under fire. Damn brave kids.

Probably the 1000th time you have been asked this....what camera is it?

Actually you are the first. smile
It is a fairly inexpensive Nikon COOLPIX L22.
It's not very good for aerial shots or long distance shots but for up close and personal I think it does fairly well.
The videos of the WW1 replica aircraft walk arounds I posted were taken with it too.

Edit:
I am going to have to get out the manual because the brochure mentions a zoom feature that may improve my long range shots. I've had the camera for 8 months and I didn't know about it until I read the brocuhure. hahaha

Edit Reason: I added info about the zoom feature.

Ah thanks.

Watch the zoom as it may only be a digital zoom not optical so the results won't be that good. (edit: looks like it is optical zoom)

I agree for close up shots it is good. Very clear and bright.

I have just got an Olympus SZ-30MR and waiting to give it a try out. It can be fully auto or with lots of manual over-rides. 24x optical zoom.

I found out how to adjust the zoom so I am going to play around with it and see how well it works. The zoom feature even works with the video. The last camera I had the zoom did not work with the video feature.

There is a mini airshow on the 11th at Hemet-Ryan airfield that I was going to pass on but I think I am going to use it to test out the camera now. I like A-10's so that is another reason to go to the show. thumbsup

Yes, nice pics Wheels!

I've thought about going to the Hemet-Ryan air show, but that would be two weekends in a row for me, and I have things to do around the house so I'm not sure I want to make the drive up there. The A-10 is very tempting, though...
