I just got a copy of Search and Rescue 4 (I know, old program) and am running on a laptop. Anyone know of a way to use the spotlight WITHOUT a Num Keypad. Can it be remapped to another key. Also I've looked for an editable config file to change the res. to 1366x768 I can't find out how to do it. Thanks for any help.

Yeah, if anyone knows how to enable wide screen support for this one, aspect ratio of 1.78, or what you'd need at 1920 x 1080, I'd sure like to know. Hex edit, anything. Thanks!

Cheers!

Here's the fix:

1. Open config.dat in a hex editor such as Breakpoint Software's Hex Workshop. You can download older versions of Hex Workshop for free on the Breakpoint Software website. I'm using 3.11 under Windows 7 64-bit and it works fine.

2. The 4th byte from the beginning of the file is the horizontal resolution. It's a signed/unsigned 32-bit integer, 4-byte data. If you look in the lower left corner of the Hex Workshop screen you'll see it translated to whatever resolution you've set, 640, 1024, whatever.

3. The 8th byte from the start of the file is the vertical resolution. It's also a signed/unsigned 32-bit integer, 4-byte data. Again, if you look in the lower left corner of the Hex Workshop screen you'll see it translated to whatever resolution you've set, 480, 768, whatever.

4. Simply change the values to whatever resolution you want and save the file, the game engine will do the rest. Scaling with this fix is perfect, no long, flat, sausage-shaped choppers or anything. Here's a screenshot from SAR4 at 1920 x 1080 on my computer. I believe this should work for all the Search and Rescue-based games.

I'm running the game under Windows 7 64-bit and it runs just fine. With the widescreen issue fixed, it's a nice bargain title for helicopter fans.

Hope this helps some people!

Cheers!

Nice discovery, Sauron. I personally don't play SAR4 but if I still had admin access to the Helosim.com website, I'd surely add this new mod.

You guys have got me looking around for my copy of SAR4.
I suspect it's in one of my many bins of games stored outside.

Where is the config.dat located?

Also, where can I find a full default keylist? The keylist in the manual doesn't appear to show everything and there are allusions to turning off AFCS and a bunch of other stuff (even that keys can be changed from default to something else) but nothing as to specifics.

I'd also like to change it from recognizing Joystick 1 to Joystick 2.

Found it. S&R4 hadn't created one yet because I needed to run it as Admin. Had the same issue in WWII Fighters. It doesn't look like anything in HxD, but I'll try that other program you mentioned.

The Trim key (Numpad 0) still doesn't work and I still haven't figured out how to turn off the AFCS for the heck of it. AFCS off and Vortex Rings, even though they are mentioned in the manual, do not appear to be implemented. Too bad.

Is there a way to turn off head movement with Gs?

Has anyone tried the free Linux version that still gets updates? I've never used that OS.

Hi Guys,

are S&R 4 and S&R 4 Coastal Heroes two different games?

THX.

And THX Reticuli for the silicon grease advice for the X-52! Difference can be measured in lightyears...

Thanks! Setting the collective control to Joystick throttle in the controller menu, the control defaults to the mini slider on the throttle. How to assign it to the Throttle?

I don't know how to do it in the config or the sim, but there's a guy with registry changes for the x65f who's also made some for the x52. It allows you to turn off rotaries and swap axiis. That might offer a solution. http://forum.lockon.ru/showthread.php?p=1428358#post1428358

I believe that section of the manual is left over from previous versions of the title. SAR1 for instance had trim, autopilot, autohover with a blip switch for speed and altitude, a working AFCS that if decoupled made life REAL interesting etc. SAR4 to my knowledge has none of that.

Wow. Does that one work on windows 7 and is it worth checking out? I wonder if that freeware Linux version combines all these features.
