Stabsfeldwebel Friedhelm Ollenschlager.
9th Staffel III Gruppe Jagdgeshwader 2 'Richthofen'
Caen 14th September 1940
Escorted Dorniers of KG3 to bomb Westhampnett, no combat.
Ollenschlager! report to the Adjutant immediately
"Ollenschlager! delightful to see you"
"Herr Oberleutnant?"
"You know Leutnant Flick is leaving to have his appendix removed?, a complicated procedure I understand"
"Especially since it was removed in 1932"
"Er.. yes, well as of now you are the Gruppe Technical Officer"
"I'm not sure I'm properly qualified Sir"
" Oh don't worry about that, its only a cover for a 'special mission the CO is putting together"
'Special mission' I shifted uneasily I didn't like the sound of this.
"He's a bit concerned about us not being in the thick of things so when HQ asked about a 'diversionary attack' he jumped at the chance!"
This sounds worse and worse!
" So tomorrow your taking 12 109's to escort a schwarme of 110's to bomb Biggin Hill, here are your pilots"
I glanced at the list and winced.
"He thinks this is a marvelous opportunity for some of our less experienced flyers"
I nodded " Don't tell me Herr Oberleutnant, let me guess, III/ZG2 are doing the bombing?"
"My dear fellow, how did you know?, not to worry no barn doors at Biggin ha ha ha"
Very good sir.
"It should be a piece of cake Ollenschlager, the enemy will assume your a decoy and ignore you until you bomb them"
"And then Herr Oberleutnant?"
" Well I'd advise you not to hang around "
Wearily I salute and prepare to leave.
Oh and before I forget, strict orders from the Old Man, all noses to be painted yellow, your going into JG26 and JG51 territory so you want to advertise whose side your on"
I had resisted all attempts/instructions to paint a yellow nose on my aircraft for so long it had become a superstition, I felt that this was very bad luck.
