By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 9:58 AM on 3rd September 2010 A rare German wartime bomber which was discovered on a sandbank 70 years after it was shot down during the Battle of Britain is to be raised, it was announced today. The twin-engined Dornier 17 first emerged from Goodwin Sands, a ten-mile long sandbank off the coast of Deal, Kent, two years ago, a spokesman for the RAF Museum said. Since then, the museum has worked with Wessex Archaeology to complete a full survey of the wreck site, usually associated with shipwrecks, before the plane is recovered and eventually exhibited as part of the Battle of Britain Beacon project. She´s lying belly-up with bombbays and access hatch widely open. Right tail wing is missing, too. Won´t be much to rescue inside the bomber Nevertheless, hopefully the salt water did not do too much damage - the electron parts will have vanished - and the silt has preserved it from corrosion. In the Ijssel Lake, Netherlands (sweetwater) a Do215 is lying under similar conditions.

Hi Guys,
This from the latest edition of "Flypast" Magazine. Not sure exactly who shot it down, could have been a Defiant of 264 Squadron which certainly intercepted the raid and claimed 6 destroyed and 1 damaged before they were bounced by the 109 escort from the Staff Staffel of JG3 and lost 3 of their own. Could equally have been somebody from 56, 610 and 616 Squadrons which were also involved and shot down a number of 109's.
The Dorniers were apparently from III/KG3. All the losses were from 7 Staffel. It is Do17 Z-2 code 5K+AR serial 1160? and lies on its back in what is said to be very good condition and largely intact. The RAF Museum Hendon and Wessex Archaeology have surveyed the site and decided to raise and restore it. There has been some vandalism but some of the "stolen" parts have been recovered and a plan is in hand to protect the site prior to recovery. It make take quite some time but this old warbird could end up as part of the display at Hendon.

"The plane's pilot, Willi Effmert, attempted to carry out a wheels-up landing on Goodwin Sands but, although he landed safely, the aircraft sank. He and one other crew member were captured but another two men died." Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-...0#ixzz116lno8D0
