GameRanger pilots

We are switching to 1.28e/ETO_01 as the multiplayer standard, so do not forget to change the Gameranger pointer to the eaw.exe. If 1.28e is in a new folder then the first time that you fly may generate a message from the windows firewall too, sitting behind the other screens, so watch out for it.

Ok there's always one and it looks like me.

I copied the files from my EAW CD into a folder on my desk top then put a copy of a INI file from my working game into the EAW put the following 3 downloaded zips into the EAW folder and run them in the following order

128E
ETO SOUNDS
PLANES

Double clicked my EAW exe file game loaded ok lots of problem with graphics could not get out of game
tried again game will not load nothing.

A copy of part of a PM I sent as a reply to a question about 1.28E

Quote:

For various reasons it needs to be installed as a standalone version without OAW.

Make a new empty folder and copy and paste the eight 1998 CDF files, the music folder, and your "eaw.ini".
Then run the three installer files in it so that you have a complete standalone 1.28e set up and run the eaw.exe.

If it works then you can install the addons.

I would also add that if the d3d windower was needed in order to get a good graphic display with a previous version of the eaw.exe then it is likely to be needed with 1.28e.

Thank you for the reply MRJelly

But I do not see any CDF files on my original 1968 EAW install disc -

I do have 22 Channel files.

RE-EDIT

I have just copied the 22 CHANNEL files and my latest INI and Music folder into a folder ran the new 3 zips and all is well EAW never looked so good.
Many thanks for all your hard work most appreciated.

A common "problem", which I often forget.
One of the windows folder/file options is to "hide extenders for known file types". It may even be turned on by default.
If you have this turned on then you would see "WSOUND" (a "channel file") when I see "WSOUND.CDF" because I do not have it turned on.

Didnt notice this before but had a quick whiz using the dreaded keyboard as my mate wanted to borrow my joystick for the weekend but when flying I normally set the throttle at 60%. But when using the up & down keys the speed goes to max!
I then turned the engine off in flight and the speed then drops but again when I use the up & down keys the air speed climbs straight to top speed!
Is there something in the ini file that needs adjusting.
This is only happening in my 1.28e game folder.
Strange but keep flying right past my target once getting into a good shooting spot!

Mann oh Mann oh Mann... This is is not just a version, it's a revival of EAW, also with a huge add-on for the start. A must have of course.

Runs very fine with my old ATI card sending to history any grafical glitches. No more need of a windower neither.

My warmest congrats to all fans involved thumbsup

Just check your eaw.ini file for the keyboard settings.

Mine reads

START ENGINE 1=CTRL 1
START ENGINE 2=CTRL 2
START ENGINE 3=CTRL 3
START ENGINE 4=CTRL 4
THROTTLE UP=EQUALS
THROTTLE DOWN=MINUS
THROTTLE 0=SHIFT MINUS
THROTTLE 10%=1
THROTTLE 20%=2
THROTTLE 30%=3
THROTTLE 40%=4
THROTTLE 50%=5
THROTTLE 60%=6
THROTTLE 70%=7
THROTTLE 80%=8
THROTTLE 90%=9
THROTTLE 100%=0

The MINUS and EQUALS keys are on the keyboard next to Backspace and not on the numeric keypad.

Up and running here. Bloody good!

Thanks to all involved!

EDIT: The curious thing is that I get non-warped screens without using the windower. Which is very good indeed!

Question - I have most of the old add on and modded aircraft for EAW. Are they usable in the 1.28d and 1.28e versions, or will they not render properly at 1024x768? I have quite a few flight sims (including the Ilushin one, which I find kinda blah), but eaw has the best campaigns by far.

They are usable in 1.28e because the 1024x768 size only applies to the graphics used for the selection screens and the corresponding menus, not the game itself.

TY, tried a clean install with 1.28d last night and it worked like a charm, in flight. The offline mission screen was sometimes garbled (pixilation and color distortion), but the buttons functioned, the added post flight graphic suffered the same every time. The map for selecting base and target did not render properly either on my system. The locations were way off (southern English airfields were in Northern France) and although the target markers were visible I couldn't switch targets. The cursor also left permanent trails on the map. The comp has a fresh install of xp on it, and all current drivers. p4 1.7 with 1.25 gb ram, so I'm tempted to put it down to that particular video card, an Nvidia 5200. I'm going to try the 1.28e version tonight or tomorrow.

Great job on this. I have 15+ years worth of various flight sims, including IL2, and like most who have played eaw, it is my favorite. I was reinstalling it specifically to replay the long campaign. While cfs has excellent flight dynamics and tons of available aircraft their missions are really lame and the idea of having every base but your home an enemy was just 'silly', to put it politely. smile

If you check the thread "Versions of the exe- which way to go?" you will see that 1.28d is redundant.
1.28e is so much more advanced, and comes with four planesets in addition to the default planes.
With luck you can avoid the screen corruption that you describe by using the d3d windower.

Just finished reading that thread, ironically, while I was downloading the full boat of 1.28e add-ons. I have a 1gb p3 with an MX400 NV card that only supports the pre nvidia error driver so i'm going to do an original eaw install on that system and install the full 1.28e package on my main system. I've had the DAW and Mediterranean mods ever since they hit the net but never got around to actually using them much. Looking forward to that and the SPAW mod (made my own version of that a few years back for offline). I like the WW1 flying too and have all the orig planes and mods (ground objects, hangers, etc), people made for it. Wondering if it's worthwhile to attempt a separate 1.28e install for a ww1 version...

Did a clean install of 1.28e yesterday on my 1.7 p4, with all of the add ons. Works like a charm. Still having the preflight and map screen issues though so i'm going to google 'd3d windower' to figure out wth yer talkin about, smile

First installed EAW on a 160mhz SOYO (586 architecture), with maybe 64 mb's of ram and a 4 mb vid card(under the min requirements for the game but the SOYO was a beast and could pull it off). EAW, you've come a long way, baby!

Hi cv,

no, there isnt a real readme for now. We just miss(ed) the time, but most of the new features for the user are obvious, if you read the related threads and if you look into the EAW config screen.

Greetings

Gentlemen!, congratulations to all involved in making this mighty upgrade. I've been away from the forum for a while and have returned to find this momentous release. The game works so simply now, facilitated by the D3D windower which has been a godsend for me at least and game looks wonderful with these new screens. The graphics seem sharper now, and I've only tried a couple of planes yet, but the flight-model seems more demanding-not good news for me, I'm afraid as I'm no ace. Thanks for all your work, you're keeping this game a living classic.

If you come straight from EAW 1.2 .. that's quiet normal.
After some flights hours and some joystick sensitivity adjustements you will fill the gap smile

Hi all,let me share my short feedback.
Since EAW was one of my favourites in its time, I kept checking the improvements almost every year around the net.
Almost every time I tried to fire it up, it was a failure, mainly because of my system & video card. Time flies.
But.
I downloaded 1.28 and worked like a charm. For the first time. No complex procedures, no 3rd party magical tools, onyl 1.28 and the original game.
I must say, its a miracle what you have done to this game. I love the new flight model (not even remember the old one, and played il2 for years), graphics are amazing.
Te best is, that the game mechanics are still easy to learn, and fits perfectly to my demand.
I have only small issue with the map distorsion, but thats really a small thing.
I tried gameranger, couldn't find anyone, but will keep trying.
So, all in all, a big thanks to everyone involved!

Just a little clarification to the flight+damage model and plane performences in 1.28e.

1. You should program the WEP button. If you start the game, WEP is enabled, the WEP button reduce the max throttle
position to the highest where the engine dont overheat.
The "THROTTLE 100%= " is the WEP button. I have this in my EAW.ini "THROTTLE 100%=Joystick_Btn_9".
By pushing Joystick Button 9 the possibility to use WEP get dissabled, pushing it again, you can use it again.

2. A few engines comes along without WEP, still the overheat behaviour is not absolut the same. Other engines have a real WEP(1-3min short endurace), other engines have a combat power WEP(around 10 minutes) and others WEP is like an water methanol injection(Sondernot for german planes).
The time to overheat is never constand and depends to the plane speed and altitude(above or below rated altitude).

3. Currently we support two superchanger stages, as such two rated altitudes. Some hundret feet above this rated altitudes the engine wont overheat anymore. If you be above the 1st rated alt and the 2nd supercharger get enabled, the engine will start to heat up again.
Superchargers only can support the higest presure up to rated alt, here the presure and as such the tendency to overheat reduce with increasing altitude.

4. The rated altitudes and supercharger switch alt are not constand, instead the RAM air effect can influence them.
There are only a few WWII planes where the RAM air effect dont had a big influence(P38 for example).
The Rated altitude at climb speed and the rated altitude at max speed might differ by up to 5000 feet. Between climb speed and a extreme dive speed(above max speed) the different might be even higher.

So it can help you much to know what is your altitude and what is your supercharger stage, at what altitude have your plane the best power at what speed and the same knowledge about the enemys plane.

A well known example is the relation between SpitIXc Merlin61 and FW190A4. The latter had a way better power up to around 1100m altitude, here is the 1st rated altutude of the BMW801D, up to roundabout 3000m the power decrease, then the 2nd stage start and the power increase a little up to around 6200(the altitudes vary by +/- 300m with plane speed).
The Merlin61 have its 1st rated altitude at around 4200m(1st power peak), now the power smelt down up to around 6000m(power hole), then it increase again up to 8000m(2nd rated alt).
If you compare this values, you will see, that the FW190A have its best relative performence below around 2000m and then at around 6000m, so at around 4200m and above 6500m the Spitfire will have the better relative performence.

5. Damages influence your plane performence!!
If you take impacts and get a damage message, not only the parts, mentioned in the message, got damaged, but also the main Airframe. This will increase the drag and decrease the max lift, so the all over performence of your plane will decrease.
You should keep that in mind, for the case that you play a campaign and want to survive. A former faster or better manouverable plane might get outaccelerated or turned by an slower or less good turning plane.
Also landing and stall/spin recover might work different.
The alerons, rudder and elevator can get damaged, if they are damaged, they lose performence, they also might get hit more than one time, in that case the performence decrease even more. As long as the damages are not realy bad, you should be able to disengage and fly home with this damages.

6. You can adjust the Guns convergence to your preference.
This can be done for all planes at same time in the EAW.ini (Guns Convergence Z=0, Guns Convergence Y=0), or individual for each plane in the vc_offset_**.mpf files with an special tool.
All this values dont have an influence to the multiplayer compatibility!

7. Unlike to EAW1.2, MG´s are not that effective anymore on long distance, while cannons, specialy big cannons,
keep much of their power. Specialy smal MG´s suffer badly and need a real close distance.
But for the damagepower not only the gun, but also the target is important. With EAW1.28e we can create planes without plating and self sealing tanks, here also smal MG´s work way better on longer range. The oposide option are
heavy armored planes, like the B17, IL-2, FW190A8-R8 etc. Here smal MG´s and even heavy MG´s get more in trouble and even 20mm´s lose much of the destructive power. Still, by luck even a single 13mm hit can kill a IL-2 pilot.

8. All planes included in EAW1.28e and the "Planes" folder are adjusted following real test datas, if there wasnt enough datas available, the performence is a result out of the airframe and calculated engine datas. Still there might be errors(dont had the time to test all and everything is so short timespan).

Greetings,

Knegel

Checking SWOTL- there are some pics and menu files which should not be there.
I'll fix it and make a new download.

Run this in your EAW 1.28E folder
http://www.users.on.net/pam_biddell/1.28E_Install/DSP/SWOTLPatch.exe A 4.5 meg patch to replace some screens

Also delete any "mnu" files from the "SWOTL/Game" folder

A link to the patch has been added to the addons webpage

I have also updated the SWOTL download file so that thew patch is not needed for people downloading it for the first time

Hello all
I am getting a "pic not found p109gytr.tpc!" when I want to play the SWOTL campaign on the German side.
A couple of other questions from a newbie who came back to this game after some years:
- which campaign replaces the DAW one (1940,1943 or 1944)?
- is there a plane set for the default BOB (1940) campaign somewhere?

Good job on bringing this old game up to the new standards!

Hi Uros,

if you have 1.28E loaded then just pick the 'early eto' planeset on your config screen to get suitable planes for BOB...

Hi,

if you unload the plane sets or select Plane set 5, you get the default plane set, then BoB work as usual.

The ETO early plane set is realy more a 1941+ plane set.

Hi, all,

I installed 128E over an existing (working) 128c installation, along with the add-ons and the SWOTL, but am still getting the "pic wrong resolution" message. I can hear the initial flight when it loads, but no plane image or menus....

The music just starts.. and then I get the error message...

The resolution on my computer is set to 1024 x 768, but it doesn't work on any computer or EAW resolution either. Any suggestions?

Hi Bularia,

it isnt the resolution of your monitor screen or your eaw that is wrong, the problem you are having is that for 1.28E we rebuilt the menu screens in 1024x768, one or more of your screens are the old resolution, that is why you can't run them.. the menus are all in one of the cdf files that came with the 1.28E installer so if you installed correctly I think they should have all been swapped for the new ones, try installing the 1.28E installer to an empty folder and copy the cdf files to your eaw directory

cheers,

Ok, I did a clean full install of EAW from my CD, and copied the files from the 128E to the EAW directory (Program Files/Microprose/European Air War/

When I try to run the program, the screen goes black and I hear the introductory engine, but no picture of the P-51 flying around the world. I click with the mouse, and I get a weak Morse Code; click again, and I get music and about a third of the screen, cut off just below the "Pilot Career" section. If I select "Instant Mission", I get the gauge, and then the flight cockpit comes up with a voice announcing a greeting to "Foxhole Flight" and engine running; an instant later the screen goes black again and the program freezes, still with the engine running. I have to do the three finger salute and hit "Alt E" to get back to WinXP desktop.

All other choices give me the truncated screen....

The only other alterations have set the .ini file to 1024 x 768, and added the line that lets me run it no-cd......

If I try to run other versions of EAW.exe (1.2a, 1.2c), I get other errors, e.g. "7217" (this is just by copying the files over and renaming). Would 1.2d make a difference?

Thanks,

Chuck

P.S., I do have a version that is working under 1.2c (I think), except for very garbled screens. I'm thinking maybe it is the movies.cdf file for that initial opening screen where I can't see the p51???

Hi,

the main problem is the graphiccard or its driver. One possible solution is to use the 3dwindower(please use the SimHQ search option to seak for the related threads), the windower offer the biggest probability to get all versions of EAW going.
Another possibility might be to use a other driver for your graphiccard, if there is a working driver for your card depends to your card. NVidea is realy doing a bad job regarding their 8-bit support. frown

If one EAW version is working, the other also should work, but dont make the mistake and use your EAW1.28c EAW.ini in EAW1.28e, let the game create a new EAW.ini, then make the needed changings.

Greetings,

Knegel

Hi Chuck,

yep you are almost there now smile... don't worry about the plane flying around the globe, just hit spacebar or return to skip it, you won't see it with an nvidia card until you get the d3dwindower program installed :

read this thread for the links and setup info.

Thanks, Pobs, that helped. I can now get into instant flight mode in a P38 or a Spitfire (so far, anyway).

1. I can't seem to eliminate the cockpit view, though. Is there a command in the .ini for that?
(Usually it is "." on the number pad, but it doesn't seem to work)

2. The screens are still cut off just below "Pilot Career", and in "Select Mission" I seem to be able to select an aircraft (I think; it may depend on direct.set), but on "Mission Parameters" there are no option (i.e., no place to click)
Also, in Pilot Career, there is no option to Select an American Pilot (that may be because I am in ETA01?)

===========
Also, when I go to your page to get 1.26E (to try it), I get a web page that is labeled as a .zip, and can't figure out how to download; the links take me to pages with sponsor links.

Also, the d3d windower program has a virus (according to Norton); I did manage to download it from other sites, but can't figure out how to use it, since the menus are all in Korean.

Hi Chuck

OK first off, ignore the virus warning, we checked with the antivirus people directly ( jell emailed them about it) and they confirmed it was the hijacking of the output into a window that made it look like a virus working but it isn't. Secondly, if you have installed the d3dwindower you need to read the details of my setup from that second link to set up the program for your system. Here is the relevent posting repeated :

that, it is a very simple little freeware proggie that seems to cure a lot of Nvidia card problems.

get it here :

http://www.brothersoft.com/d3dwindower-238977.html

after installing just drag and drop youre eaw.exe into the box and then under 'settings you can set the window size to the size of your screen, bearing in mind the width and height boxes are inverted !! so height of screen goes in the 'width' box etc.... if you have any problems setting it here is my setup :

open the d3dwindower and select an eaw.exe, then click on the 'settings' tab...

under the 'common' tab I have

height : 1024

width : 750 ( not 768 so it stays on screen in the window)

and 'use windowed mode' ticked

under the 'window mode' tab
all 3 DirectX modes along the top row ticked
and :
Ddrawcolour emulator
Ddraw colour converter
and Ddraw primary bit ticked

all the boxes under 'foreground control' and 'direct input' are left blank

that setup works for my machine but you may need to tweak it a bit.

I hope that helps, the settings tab is the first of the big yellow buttons on the top row that becomes active once you click on an exe in the window of the d3dwindower proggie....

shout if you need help smile

also bear in mind the antialiasing and anisotropic filtering settings may effect what you see...

regarding the 'no cockpit' view, that is now only available if you set the pilot ability to 'green' in the 'difficulty'- 'combat' config screen, the setting now effects the views available with ace having no outside views at all and if I remember correctly it doesn't have enemy icons either ...real hardcore fighting smile

and regarding the lack of american campaigns that probably relates to the era, if you have selected planeset1 'early eto' then it is set in 1941, so the americans arent yet present, try planeset 2 'late eto' for american careers.

get the 1.28E installer here :

http://www.users.on.net/~pam_biddell/1.28E_Install/128eInstall.htm

cheers,

Pobs

I went to that website http://www.brothersoft.com/d3dwindower-238977.html and found all kinds of links to everything BUT d3dwindower. (E.g., Brothersoft toolbar, speedup your pc, etc., ad infinitum, ad nauseam). Where is the link to actually download the program?

Can you attach it to an e-mail and send it to me at BuleriaChk "at" aol "dot" com? (I think it is freeware, isn't it?)

Also, I can't get into the cockpit config screen, since the menus are cut off at Pilot Career, and the mouse clicks don't work for any of the sub menus. Can I get to this option from the .ini file?

Ok, setting the pilot skill level at 0 got the virtual cockpit out of the way... Thanks much!
(I am runniong in 128E; I was just going to try 126 to see if it would help)

Is there any documentation on the eaw.ini file? I.e., what all the variables mean (e.g. "PlaneSetNumber") and their range of values?

Thanks,

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

I am a bit confused by your post, when I go to the brothersoft page I get this :

that is the download link ???.... do you not get the same with your browser ?..

I can send you the file in an email of course if you need it...

You will get the full menus as soon as you have the windower installed and working, so you wont have a problem after that. Regarding the paperwork to support the new exe, I am afraid it is lagging behind the development a bit at the moment, one of the reasons we a re having a bit of a pause for it to catch up and for the modders to develop mods using many of the new features. The 'planeset' simply refers to the setup you select on the main config screen, the values are from 0-4 I think, which correspond to default, early eto, late eto, early russia, late russia... they are set from the main config screen (game setup) where there is a list of planesets along the top of the original selection buttons...

cheers,

Pobs

Hi, Pobs,

Thanks,

FYI, I get this page when I click the download link:

http://www.brothersoft.com/d3dwindower-download-238977.html

But I don't see anything THERE that lets me download.....
(I don't need a free PC checkup, or Brothersoft's toolbar...????)

Or would I have to use their "free downloader" (which has yet another virus warning...:-)

Hi, guys,

Just wanted to update and thanks for all your help. I went back to my old laptop (and my midtower), and EAW runs fine on both computers, so I'll stick with those, and reserve my newer laptop for music, and not for EAW. Just downloaded the Russian Air Wars and they run great, so I'm going to have a lot of fun with all the alternatives available.

Thanks again,

Chuck

One final question:

Isn't there a dummy movies.cdf file that will replace the huge file in EAW to save disk space? I read it somewhere, but can't find it....

Hey guys,
First off, thanks a lot for 1.28e, after the garbled briefing screens and frequent crashes (of the computer, not the aircraft) I hadn't played EAW much over the past few years, but I'm delighted to say that 1.28e brings it back, bigger and better. There are a few minor problems I'm having, though. Firstly, the game sometimes crashes in single mission mode with the "Late ETO" planeset, giving me a message to the gist of "This program has encountered an error and needs to close". It seems to happen randomly, though, so it just an annoyance rather than a major issue for me.
Recently I've found something that bothers me a bit more. I've been playing a 1943 British campaign with a SpitIX and was doing fairly well. The game seems to crash every time it tries to give me a Distinguished Service Order. I get the debriefing screen, then it plays the 'medals' music with a black screen, then it crashes. Unlike the other crashes, this one comes up with an error number (sorry, I can't remember it, the next time it happens I'll write it down) in a dialogue box similar to the Error 7217 crash. I thought it was odd because it had already let me win the DFC without any problems. I replayed the mission twice, got the DSO twice, and it crashed each time in the same way. Then I played the mission a fourth time, didn't win the DSO and it let me go to the barracks screen no problem. The next time it happens I'll write down the error number and post it here, but I thought I'd just put it out here and see if anybody else had noticed an error like this.
My computer is an Intel core i7 with Vista and 6GB RAM and I use the ATI Radeon 4800 graphics card. The rest of the game works perfectly and crashes extremely rarely.
Thanks, it's great to play EAW again, when I get an internet connection to my home computer someday I might be able to join you gents online.

Hi Hilux, a google search for runtime error 162 gave me this :

'How to Fix Runtime error 162?

To fix Runtime error 162, you should understand the concept of Runtime error 162 and identify the causes of it firstly. What is Runtime error 162? This error usually occurs when a DLL file is missing, or not registered on your computer. It is a really common problem for windows users which crashes now and then.'

and :

'How to Fix Runtime Error 162 Instantly?

Runtime Error 162 is referring to your Windows registry. Every time you install or uninstall a program, a 'signature' of the action was registered in the Windows registry. With so many combinations of records that overlap each other - especially bad installation, you will get a registry that is full of broken entries. These corrupted files will make Windows lost every time you try to start any program for that matter. Therefore, to fix Runtime Error 162, you need to fix the corrupted registry entries at first. Runtime Error 162 is one of the common runtime errors that annoy many Windows system users. You can try to uninstall and reinstall the application which caused Runtime Error 162. However, it is a time consuming way to fix Runtime Error 162 like that.'

so it would seem that it is a problem with a dll file. Beyond that I can't help at this moment. One other possibility that occurs to me is that we may not have resized the images for the medals to the new format. I will check on that...

cheers,

Pobs

Thanks Pobs,
I should have thought to look on Google. As it is, I did a registry scan with a program called CCleaner and let it fix all the registry errors it found, but I'm afraid it didn't get rid of the problem. I don't know much about DLL files; I've checked that the installation has the same number of DLLs as an older version of EAW and that they are the same size, but I'm not sure that tells you much. I think it's quite bizarre - after all, it let me win a DFC earlier in the career. Could it be something specific to the DSO? Do they use different DLL files?

two things come to mind....

1. the dso image is causing a problem... or

2. there is an attached video sequence trying to play after the award, we know the smacker videos wont work with modern OS and vid drivers. ( not very likely though if it is the grpagics of the medal itself that doesn't appear).

have you tried it in the windower? this seems to solve a lot of video driver issues so it may be worth trying it to narrow down the problem a bit..

cheers,

Guys,
the only time I have ever encountered a "runtime" error
was when installing OAW without Jel's runtime files. I will
bet that if you re-install Jel's runtime files, it will fix
your problem. If not, please have a drink on me! biggrin

http://www.sandbagger.uk.com/jelly/JelsVB6Runtimes.zip

If this does not fix your problem, I would re-install 1.28e
over again......and make sure the runtime files are already installed.

Thanks guys, I've tried out using the D3Dwindower and installing Jel's runtime files. Unfortunately the game still crashed when I got the DSO. I've reinstalled the game (using an clean copy of the contents of the EAW CD) to a new directory, but without knowing how to copy my campaign files across it will take some time before I can recreate the error again.
Off topic a little, when I was trying to recreate the error the campaign (611 SQN RAF, starting in 1943 with the Late ETO plane set) skipped over 6 months from late April 1944 to January 1945. Is it supposed to do that, or did my character get a whopper of a hangover in London?
Hold that drink Angleoff, I'll let you know if it crashes again on the new installation, but it might take a few days.
Thanks again guys, Hilux

Hilux,

your campaign savegames are in the 'savedata' folder in a 'careerXX.sve' format, just drop them over into the savedata folder in your new install

Gday Hilux,

I had the exact same crash as you describe though I have a nvidia card and the problem has not had a fix, that I know of.

As far as I can tell its caused by the 1024x768 screens and possibly a memory overflow in 1.28E.

The only way to bypass it that I found with this release is to not be so brave and/or shoot down too many enemy, you know, the Distinguished Service Order
type of activity.

Hi,

if the crashes are related to an movie, "PlayIntro=0" would solve it.

Otherwise the included campaign files might cause the trouble.

When i find the time, i will offer a setup withot this files.
Otherwise, if you dont want to play online, you could go to:
ETO_01 -> Planeset2
Here you need to remove the following files:
MISN43.DAT
MISN44.DAT
MISN45.DAT
SQDESCGR.STR
SQDESCUK.STR
SQDESCUS.STR
SQNAMEGR.STR
SQNAMEUK.STR
SQNAMEUS.STR
SQGR43.DAT
SQGR44.DAT
SQUS43.DAT
SQUS44.DAT
SQUK43.DAT
SQUK44.DAT
CAMPGR43.DAT
CAMPGR44.DAT
CAMPUK43.DAT
CAMPUK44.DAT
CAMPUS43.DAT
CAMPUS44.DAT

Be carefully, dont delete a other file.
This also could be done with Planeset1(if there is trouble), bute here also the 1940 files need to get erased.

Greetings,

Knegel

Hey Nads, nice to see you again. Talk about being hamstrung by one's own success smile I'm really glad to hear that I'm not the only one with the problem (glad to hear that it's not a unique to my machine, not glad to hear that other people have problems).
Thanks Ralf, unfortunately I already had the intro videos turned off. Unfortunately flying online isn't an option for me right now (no internet connection to my computer), so I will try deleting the files you mentioned and see if that fixes things. Otherwise I'll just play for the Americans, Germans or Russians or use an older version of the game for campaigns until a fix comes out.
Thanks for your time gents, Hilux.

Hi there, just been installing eaw on my pc (xp), at first it gave me the error 7217 message, looking through here I followed your advice to the 3 pam biddell 1.28e downloads. This helped to a point - I can now get into the game, and flight is fine, but in all the menu screens I can only see the top half of the screen, the bottom half is black. Anyone got any ideas how I can get it back as I can't see what I'm doing, change control settings, play the game properly?!

Thanks for the help Col. Gibbon,

I already copy the other files (no wsprites.cdf) of eaw cd to a new eaw folder; then create a new folder in eaw folder, copy the 22 cdf files(no wsprites.cdf), ini, music folder and the 3 zip files from 1.28e; then i run the 3 files to install 1.28e.
My question is: i just have to copy the wsprites file you send me to the eaw folder and the new folder i had create?

[sorry my english] wink

The normal install method is to copy your EAW CD to a folder which you can call EAW.

Once you have a 1.0 complete install copied to your folder, simply apply the 1.28e patch to it, which will over write most of the files in the folder, and then you can try running the EAW.exe.

If you have scrambled screens, but the game runs, then you will need to install the windower program. There are lots of info already posted here by Pobs about how to get the Windower working, so I will not repeat the info, just do a search for "Windower" wink

Hi, Greetings to the EAW community from another EAW veteran. wink I thought I use the holidays to have a look whats new in EAW and found the 1.28E. I downloaded it and installed it to a plain EAW installation. Running the EAW exe 1.28E all seems to work normally (screens, sounds, config, plane preview), but as soon as I start a mission I see the cockpit, hear the engine sound and even a message from the wingman but then the game freezes. I have to use a hard reset to get my computer up again.
Never had this before. I also tested an old EAW installation that is still on my HD and this one works fine...

Did anyone encounter such a problem?
Could it be that the new exe doesn't run in Win98? Maybe I'm one of the very few that still use it...

Hi Andy!

Nice to see you back. cool

As to your problem, did you copy your CD, or install it from the CD?

If you installed it, you'll need to delete the install, and simply copy your CD to a folder and then patch it to 1.28E.

Then give it a go. smile

Hi Andy,

plug a joystick or set ForceFeedback = 0

That might cure the problem.
