I just installed Win 7 on 100 GBs of a 1TB HDD. How should I partition the rest of the drive? I roughly have 850 GBs left.

The following are games/sims I play (listed in order of importance):

Arma 2 Combined Ops
Lock On Flaming Cliffs 2
MLB 2K10
War in the Pacific: Admirals Edition
Napoleon/Empire Total War
FSX + various addons
ROF
DCS Black Shark
X3 Terran Conflict
Strike Fighters Vietnam
IL2 1946 and Wings of Prey

I was thinking initially of putting the following all on separate partitions of 200 GBs each: FSX+add ons on one, and then on the other FC2/DCS Black Shark(soon to add WH:A10C). So that would be around 400 GBs with another 400+ left over.

Any ideas?

That will work.

I used to have many partitions.

Now, I think the best route is the OS partition, a File Saving partition, an Active Games partition, and a Backup partition (Backup preferably on a different HD). I've found that larger partitions give more flexibility than many smaller ones. In fact, I've taken that to the extreme of having 6 hard drives -- each with one partition.

Active OS and non-game Software Appplications

Active Games

Passive File storage (patches, personal, pictures, other downloads)

Passive Multimedia files (video, movies, audio)

Backup 1 (on an internal drive)

Backup 2 (on an external drive that is normally disconnected)

Merely what I do, FWIW. I think anything one is comfortable with is OK -- but a separate Backup will probably "pay for itself" someday.

Hrmm, im about to get a 1TB Drive too,

Im gonna formatt it to 100GB for Windows/System and maange the rest with 300GB Partitions (Programs, Backup, Capture Drive).

When my 250GB Drive gets back Im gonna image copy my Windows Parition to the 250GB.
Then send out my 500GB Drives under RMA to get replaced and keep those as backups.

Actually this is exactly what I've been using for the last several years and it's been flawless (so far wink ). My faster 160GB SATA HDD has two partitions; C: for my OS/apps, and D: for games. Then I have another older 80GB SATA for all my downloads until I can go thru and either delete them or move them to a 1TB external HDD; which I use for backup. So far so good!
One thing I hear over and over is since Windows Vista is to not install games to the default C:\Program Files\ directory as it can cause issues

You really want to minimize the number of partitions you have because of their negative affect on a drive's seek times.

Ideally OS and data should be on separate drives (or at the least separate partitions), but I don't see much reason to split things up beyond that.

I second Speedo. All those partitons are going to slow that modern fast hard drive down to the speed of an old PATA drive from years ago.I have my OS on a 750Gb WD Black and all my apps and games too. Nothing but backups and DATA on the second hard drive, a WD 1TB green.

I stick with 3 on a main drive if you have no other drive:
1 for OS
1 for back ups and image
1 for game/software installations

Leave a good bit in the back up if you do regular back ups, but it doesn't have to be that big if you're just storing an image after your installations.

Yeah, windows Vista is screwy.

in XP:
I Install everything to a separate Folder, and I export the reg keys after install and make a .RAR Backup with the .REG file, so i can just either copy the folder from one drive to another after a O/S refresh and import the reg keys.

i do this all the time with Final Fantasy 12 online for my brother, because its like 6 DVDs to reinstall and then another 5 hours of downloading / installing updates, so after every major update we rar the entire folder and export the registry keys. We've restored the game in 5 minutes at least 4 times after re-installing windows.

I've run 3 partitions on a single drive and actually gained some performance (tho fairly small) by selecting where to put each partition physically on the drive (outer edge vs. innermost edge. Then you can have your OS/Games partitions on the fastest part of the drive, while all the random files are stored where seek times aren't as important. Then, you can use defrag software like UltimateDefrag to even better organize those files for optimum seek times/performance. The defrag software alone can do this on a single drive; but you will have to do it a lot more often as data keeps getting written/overwritten. It just better helps organize software IMO.

It's kind of a hassle; but in the end it does work.

isnt that called Partition Striping? (i dont think it was striping, it was something else),
i know i read an article on placing partitions within certain ranges there fore installing stuff in the fastest parts of the harddisk
